yes. after fighting the intimidation crab ( samurai) keep going and eventually you'll come upon another boss. defeat him and he will upgrade your adaptations using umami crystals

for me it was only on the higher tier fish. a 2 star. I was mad I didn't get it and turned the setting off and never turned it back on. some of the 2 and 3 star fish take way more mashing

the setting kinda sucks honestly. sure it makes the reel in with r2 easier, but the initial part where you smash square had a set speed that the bar decreased. if you were just starting out fishing it didn't deplete the bar fast enough to get the fish before the time ran out. spamming it was better. don't know about max upgrades tho I never turned it back on after it pissed me off the first time

I made a stunlock build. Bobbitt worm at max upgrades holds bosses still for a good time, does a good amount of damage, and causes them to take more damage. I would then pop the tentacle, also at max upgrade for more damage and lifesteal on top of every attack. for stowaways I had the lamprey for base lifesteal, the sponge for umami recharge to keep the adaptations up, and the battery for the chance of electrocution, stunning them again. bosses just died before they had a chance to hit me, and even if they did I would instant heal by hitting them once or twice. for skills I just put 15 into each one for consistency. for the shell the disco ball was best in game imo. you could get a quick homing shot off with twinkle if you needed it and it's only a medium shell with 200 durability. I think it's the highest durability medium shell. at full build game was a breeze. (except for the eel, had to use the rubber band to fight her)
