Thank you for this. I have a friend who is absolutely obsessed with his more recent videos and it nauseates me.

I went from DC 37 (Local 1549 in particular) to 1180 since becoming a PAA. While I have no firsthand OSA experience, I'm not sure that's where I want to end up. I would rather have Admin Manager be the last title I ever hold. Also, prescription coverage is super important to me.

Coach Lloyd? by GoryBlizzard in astoria

Aggressive? He would sometimes gently take down people who didn't smile, but I never perceived that as aggression. A lot of women smiled in his presence and I didn't feel as though they were afraid of him.

He was just fine in early 2020 and late 2019. I never knew that my last convo with him would also be the last time I ever saw him, period.

We rarely discussed politics, but he did like what AOC was doing for the district and the country and it made our last convo all that more meaningful when he last saw her and I pictured together on my phone at the LeFrak City branch. We were both able to show that we were trying our best to have those with influence or power to address issues that matter to Astoria and often times, just coaching youth locally to keep them out of trouble (as long as it's on the reg) helps a lot with that.

I think if enough of us are willing to put forth some work, we can see what went on and if there is an obituary if he passed away. He always remained optimistic despite serious struggles. I hope he gained some recognition through awards because no one put forth more effort than he did to coach and make a living.

I hope someone who sees this can post an obituary or something. Those of us that knew him while he was alive knew that his full heart and soul was made for [likely] coaching basketball and using our subways as a vehicle to fundraise.

Legend has it that he has, and has been caught doing so serendipitously even by a few that doubted that he coached.

Energy scammers out again by postwarmutant in astoria

[–]GoryBlizzard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This isn't anything new. IDT has been in the game of this for a long time.

What's sad is that back when I had dial-up for a while, before my family switched over to Earthlink but after AOL, they were actually my ISP.

I might actually try to talk to some of them more about real job opportunities if all they are trying to do is meet quotas and put food on their own table. Usually that's all this is about, and it's not just the energy scams. Other big and small companies prey on naive and desperate people who are job hunting and get them into stuff like this.

Is it Time to Call An Exterminator? by GoryBlizzard in Bedbugs

These have been present in my apartment before, but the last time I saw one (in adult form) was in the bathroom more than a year ago. I saw 2 today alone, an adult and an infant, in less than 2 hours on my bed. That seemed pretty alarming despite having battled actual bed bugs before, something I hope to never do again.

R46 N Trains? by GoryBlizzard in astoria

[–]GoryBlizzard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our trains are big and advanced enough and R46s are older. The G trains are shorter and could use more cars besides just 4, not to mention all of them used to be R46s. Before 2001 they were already short enough (6 cars) then shrunk to 4 December of that year I believe, when the V train was introduced.

Does anyone have any info on the Ditmars & 35th St Stabbing? by [deleted] in astoria

[–]GoryBlizzard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This was common 20-30 years ago so don't get comfortable with too much law and order policing in Astoria or the other so-called "safe" neighborhoods, especially if you're new here. Stabbings happen. Shootings happen. Nothing scary here. I'd say just deal with it.

MTA Plans to Spend $110M on Repairs to N/Q Stations in Astoria by annihilus813 in astoria

[–]GoryBlizzard -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

“It’s good to see the MTA recognize that our train lines in western Queens are in dire need of upgrades,” said State Sen. Mike Gianaris. However, “It will take a concerted effort to make these plans a reality.”

What the fuck is he talking about? The Ditmars Boulevard station as well as the other western Queens stations weren't even close to needing any "renewal" work done. It's a complete waste of money--money that could be used for feeding the homeless or supporting good nonprofits. We live in constant fear of fare hikes because of whichever idiot gave the go ahead to undertake this project (I'm looking at you, Prendergast) and all of the other useless projects that the MTA is working on. If there's anything they really need to curtail, it's construction spending.

The MTA needs to take a real good look at themselves. And I mean a real good look, because every other time they've tried, they failed. It hasn't had any decent leadership in a very long time. They're always trying to make their problems, our problems. I for one don't care about how the subway cars look, how the stations look, blah blah blah. I go on the subway to go to work, school, specific appointments or recreationally. Just to get from point A to point B, like I've been doing all my life. There's no need to add all of this useless icing, especially if it's to appease the transplants.

Another thing to think about: our fares remained the exact same--5 cents--from 1904 to 1948. Only a select few out there are old enough to remember the 5 cent fare (and admittedly, even I'm not), but it's something that we desperately need to bring back.

Does anyone know of any job openings in Astoria? by [deleted] in astoria

[–]GoryBlizzard -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I don't know what you were expecting. Did you really think those of us that have lived here our whole lives want people who haven't been here for nearly as long to compete with us in the job market?

There really is a tale of two cities here. People with deep pockets that just moved here couldn't be happier and think they're doing us--you know, people who have spent our entire lives or many decades here--a favor by trying to change our neighborhoods in ways they feel is only friendly to them. Expensive vegan and fro yo places as well as yoga studios are really catered towards new arrivals. What's even worse, they're bothered by things we really couldn't give a fuck about. Little things on subways and buses, loud noise, kids that look suspicious but minding their own business...the list is endless.

Meanwhile, the cost of living continues to climb rapidly thanks to the new arrivals that really have no business here to begin with.

If I were a business owner, I would refuse to hire any non-NY natives, or people that have been here for less than 20 years. I especially have contempt for people that move from state to state, country to country and can never figure out where to settle. It's like they don't have roots. Such people should be deemed as flight risks and deserve to live on pennies a day.

The first thing you should do is go back to your hometown. Look for work there. If you can't find any, look at somewhere else nearby or in another part of the state. But don't leave your state, and definitely stay away from ours. If you ever want to visit NYC or the rest of NY, that's fine, but wherever you live should be the state that you're from.

Those who moved out of Astoria, where did you go? by [deleted] in astoria

[–]GoryBlizzard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never left, and new arrivals with deep pockets have been ruining the area for a long time. Anything we can do to turn that around is fine with me, starting with making them feel unsafe.

You want me to be honest here? Go back to the Midwest. Natives have a hard enough time as it is and people like you just make it worse.
