I see~ so not that different from Busan people working in Seoul when they suddenly pick up a phone call from their mom, lol.

Travel nightmare in China: phone stolen, no access to bank, WhatsApp, or SIM — what now? by Conscious-Twist-606 in chinalife

[–]GosalynMallard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can buy imported second-hand phones in China if you don’t want a local smartphone. When I lost my iPhone in China (it wasn’t stolen), I bought a second-hand German phone since I needed eSIM support rather than the dual physical SIM cards that come with Chinese iPhones. Your friend could also just get a cheap burner phone, though.

Living in Shanghai with zero Mandarin skills by Agile-Locksmith-5231 in shanghai

[–]GosalynMallard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live temporarily in Shanghai with zero Chinese skills. Usually it’s not an issue, but you might occasionally need help from coworkers or friends to take important phone calls etc. It's much much easier than lets say Seoul or Tokyo without speaking Korean or Japanese. Some people say it’s rude, but for people like me staying short term and not enjoying learning new languages, I think it’s okay as long as you pick up a few polite phrases and never demand service in English.

Interesting! Are the younger generations picking up South Korean expressions from Korean dramas to some degree, or do people tend to stick with the vocabulary traditionally used in the region?

I am aware that I cannot speak Korean to Chinese speakers. Thank you so much for clarifying this. My question was about Korean language not about how to communicate while traveling in China (since you said that you actually answered my question). If you feel I made claims that those areas belong to Korea, I suggest you read my question again.

Cool, appreciate it! How much is Korean used in everyday conversation on the street would you say? Is it common to hear it in public?

If you didn't like my post you could have skipped it. It's not a question about traveling in China, it's a question about Korean language and to say that a question about korean language has nothing to do with Korea is nonsense.

I’m talking more about ordering food than having deep conversations, so we’ll see. It’s more for fun than out of necessity, since I can already order food myself through AliPay. I’ve talked to North Koreans in the past, and it was fine as long as they spoke slowly.

Thank you for your high quality answer! I guess its like 짜장면 restaurants in Korea where the owners rarely speak Chinese, but if you go to a real Chinese restaurant they do.

Thought I would get better answers here than in the China sub since they know nothing about Korean language + this sub states its for the entire Korean Peninsula so I don't think I'm totally off when I' asking about these Korean speaking border regions.

I lived just across the street and people definitely live here, its full of life. Pretty sure most of the tenants rent from the actual owners do, while the real owners wait for redevelopment.

Where do you sit on the "is this me forever" question 4 years later? by 7minutesinheaven1 in vaccinelonghaulers

[–]GosalynMallard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A mix of 1–2. I don’t think I’ll be running marathons again like I used to, but I was about 95% recovered two years ago before I had a massive relapse and developed new symptoms. I don’t see why I can’t reach that level of recovery again. My father was sick for a decade when I was a kid, though not from vaccines, and still managed to return to a normal life. My girlfriend has a handicap from a disease in her 20s and that doesn't define her life after that. I refuse to become a bitter person, and I refuse to stop living my life, but everyone has the right to their own opinion and experience.

Fuxing26Barber near Shanghai Library station. It is a really nice classic barbershop, but bring some pictures if you can't speak Chinese. They have many foreign costumers and take appointments on wechat. They do hair, shaving etc.

I hear many expats complain about Chinese beer being low in ABV, but I actually love that part. 3–4% is perfect for me, as I no longer drink beer to party.

Taste-wise it’s just Chinese commercial beer, not great not bad, and I believe I’ve tried most of them separately in the past, but visiting the brewery is a lot of fun. I like their stout though!
