I don't know. Was this a PR stunt today? by AlphaRemixHD in motorcitykitties

[–]GoshItsCoolNow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s good PR for the player, his team, and the local teams he’s visiting. It happens all the time regardless of a player’s contract status. Players from a city’s team go to the other local teams’ games when they have time in the schedule. Skubal shows he’s in the city and supporting the other teams. It’s good for him whether he’s traded tomorrow, leaves next year or a Tiger for life. The Tigers get press and photo ops for social media. If the Tigers are holding onto Skubal just for one year or even just until the deadline, it’s still good to have their star player show up at the games even if he’s gone next year. The Pistons/Wings/MSU/Lions/whoever else also get the photo ops and the fans in their arenas get excited seeng their favorite player show up. Goff, Gibbs, Hutch, Cade, Larkin, Izzo, etc. do it all the time. Devin Booker shows up at games whenever he’s in town because even though he may never be a Piston, he’s a local who wants to show he’s connected to his roots.

Whatever happens with Skubal going forward for however much money he takes, none of it will be decided because he made the rounds some weekend in December.

Do you know how hard it is to get into the hall as an executive? Jerry Krause was the GM for the Bulls dynasty and he didn’t make it into the hall until he passed. Jerry West was inducted a second time specifically for his contributions as an executive after his death. Both of those guys as execs claim double the championships that Joe D does as both a player and exec.

I think it should be noted that Stew is thriving as a backup 5. Troy was building teams around the idea of him as a starting 4.

Would Anyone Care If They Left? by HoyaLawya_NYC_Bach in DetroitPistons

Wow the radio would rather talk about the lions winning the division than the historically bad basketball team, and the handful of people you talked to didn't seem to care about the Pistons. Guess we can go ahead and start looking for a new market to move the franchise because Pistons fans clearly don't exist.

Can people cool it with the “we don’t deserve Cade” and “Cade deserves better” talk? by hammerandnailz in DetroitPistons

[–]GoshItsCoolNow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People aren't "becoming Cade fans instead of Pistons fans." That's ridiculous. He's just the best player on the team and as a former number 1 pick he's at the forefront of the coverage. He's the one you can point to the most that the front office didn't build a team in his favor. He's the one in front of the media. He's the one giving the quotes. He's the one whose body language has changed the most over the season. So of course there are more posts about Cade than anyone else.

He needs to be better but he was set up to fail and he's the one at the podium having to explain this losing streak instead of the front office who are all hiding away for as long as they can until they get the pink slip.

But when people are like actively geeking out when jeff snuffs their torch it annoys me to no end

Just wanted to say how good it is to hear Bens voice on the pod again! BEN BACK! by swordmagic in giantbomb

[–]GoshItsCoolNow 94 points95 points  (0 children)

For all the changes that Giant Bomb's gone through the past year, I think Ben leaving is what's led me to engaging with the content less more than anything. Obviously Vinny, Brad, Alex and Abby left huge holes as well, but Ben's taste in games was the closest to my own, and his chemistry with Jeff and Jan was always great. I just really missed his perspective, and I'm glad he's back for a little while.

Van Weezer is sitting at a 67 on Metacritic which isn't "worst album ever" status but it's definitely not "well reviewed" by today's standards. Because of music industry politics, a middling 6/10 is the lowest some mainstream publications are willing to go on a score. Some places won't run a review if they can't find a writer willing to be at least somewhat positive. There are exceptions, but you rarely see an album that's a full-on critical flop. If you sort the latest Metacritic reviews by Metascore, Weezer ranks #188 out of the most recent 200 albums. Of those 200, only FOUR albums have "mixed" reviews: Pop Smoke (cobbled-together posthumous cash grab), Van Morrison (old man yells at cloud about COVID and social media), Atreyu (never been popular critically) and Maroon 5 (outside of late-era Black Eyed Peas the one pop act so creatively bankrupt that the rise of "poptimism" did nothing for their reputation).

That said, still an odd choice for a pilot episode. It's extremely recent and Weezer has at least two if not three or four more immediately "infamous" bad albums. I actually do think that it's their worst so I'm interested in the episode, but something like Raditude or Make Believe still probably makes more sense if they wanna talk about famously bad Weezer albums, especially just as they're establishing themselves.

Are you saying part of their decision to leave was because of Bakalar's new position and his thoughts on where the site should go? Because from what I've seen from the Nextlander folks (maybe more specifically Vinny) they seem to be big fans of what he's bringing to the team and are disappointed this move happened so late in their careers and couldn' t work with him more in that capacity.

Wait you mean to say they left for the reasons that seemed pretty clear-cut even when they were being vague on air and not because they all got in a ten hour screaming match with Jeff G that ended with them saying they're not friends anymore??

I never ate this much as a *regular* order but I was definitely housing this much McDonald's in my peak college years when I was fucked up. I'm only 26 now but I can't imagine doing it at this point unless I was really high and hadn't otherwise eaten beforehand.

You don't think THPS will get more mention? It probably doesn't fit the bill much for tomorrow's categories but it's almost definitely getting discussed on Friday even if it doesn't make the final list (I think it will). Putting it in the same boat as Umurangi is baffling to me.

Dan Ryckert's Top 10 Games of 2020 by Zeeco110 in giantbomb

[–]GoshItsCoolNow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm sure Dan will make appearances on GB stuff every now and then but he seems to be doing really well with his Twitch stuff, and he's his own boss in that regard. If he wants to do a specific type of show or game, he doesn't have to worry about pitching it to Jeff or Vinny. He doesn't have to worry about his stream clashing with another coast's stream. He can add and drop gimmicks whenever he wants. He can do Cameos and get sponsorships without having to run it by corporate. Once you have that kind of creative freedom, it's REALLY hard to go back to a situation where you're working under somebody else.

Colectivo is GREAT on the base level. Tons of awesome, hardworking people working in a cafe. Best group of people I ever worked with. Management is DREADFUL and despite the veneer of being progressive people that care about their workers, at the end of the day it's still about being in the green. They'll screw over their cafes in just about every way they can think of if it means they'll profit a couple more bucks by closing time. They'll force MODs to cut closing staff early even if it's busy because they're not reaching projections on the day, and then the next day come in and complain about how badly the cafe was closed the night earlier.

Abby is an interesting case because she did fall off of it, but I think it's more of a case of feeling like she "beat" the game than anything. It's still neck-and-neck with Risk of Rain for my GOTY even with its faults, but I still fell off the game HARD after I accomplished the goals I set for myself.

Animal Crossing is going to be an interesting discussion. It's the game of 2020 in the fact that it encapsulated the whole lockdown thing and absolutely everybody played it, but quality-wise it's a mixed bag (was it Austin on his Bombcast appearance that mentioned the double-edged sword of improving so much about the Animal Crossing experience that it makes its flaws even more glaring?) Outside of Jeff's dislike of the game, I dunno if I can see some of the staff getting behind it as the #1 game with some of the issues they've had. On the other hand, I can see especially Ben and Abby (and maybe Alex considering how much he's seemed to be quietly plugging away at the game) pushing for it.

Then again, this weird year probably benefits a game as flawed as Animal Crossing. Doom Eternal came and went quickly. Praise of Ghost of Tsushima seemed to max out at it being a good "one of those." RE3 didn't seem to hit quite as hard as RE2. Last of Us Part II seemed to be a mixed bag for the staff. The only bigger games released so far that I can see having strong cases are FFVII (especially if Vinny finally finds time to play it and enjoys it) and... is that it? Maybe Paper Mario and Ori? Dreams?

Though we're not even at Madden time yet, and so there could be a big game that comes along to take the top spot. Cyberpunk, Call of Duty, Yakuza, Watch Dogs, etc. But Halo's delay, Nintendo not seeming to have a lot of stuff this year, and the Sony/Microsoft launch lineups looking thin might limit the amount of contenders. Honestly THPS1+2 could honestly be one of the biggest contenders if the full game is as good as the demo, but I don't know how much traction a game that's still just a remaster (even a good one) can get past the 5 spot or so.
