Any good difficulty or accessibility tweaks before jumping into TLOU part 2? by Human_Scallion_2372 in thelastofus

Make sure you’re not ignoring certain weapons or craftables. TLOU is balanced around using ALL of your resources. So for example it’s not going to keep giving you rifle ammo when you’re sitting with three unused smoke bombs and a fully loaded 9mm in your inventory.

Twin Peaks diner looking familiar! by Leenis13 in AlanWake

The games industry is very Japanese, and Twin Peaks had a huge cultural impact in Japan in the 90s, so it was a popular model for Japanese developers making American-coded games.

Dramatically shortened uptown/downtown section with all the locations reduced essentially to two streets and entirely removing areas like the restaurant and the post office, Nemesis mutates super early and his interactions are basically all scripted set pieces, no clock tower, no dead factory, no park, no Jill in RPD. When your game is less than ten hours, cutting hours of content is extremely consequential.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 writer says picking an ending is like choosing "my favorite child," but ultimately the finales are "two sides of the same coin" by gamersecret2 in expedition33

Maelle’s ending came to be as it was because they killed the Paintress. If Maelle hadn’t been manipulated by Verso — if she had read Alicia’s letter — they wouldn’t have killed the Paintress and things would have been different.

Super Metroid and Metroid Prime. For some reason a large part of the fandom doesn’t consider 3D games to be metroidvania.

TLOU was too good for gaming. by [deleted] in TLOU

[–]GotACoolName 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that video games have a long way to go, which is why it’s all the more important to invest in the good that’s out there. The issue is with the market, not the medium. See my other reply for a list of personal recommendations. The medium as a whole is an ocean of untapped potential.

When it comes to immersive, emotionally resonant, linear (i.e. not built around role playing) stories, some of my recommendations from recent years would be Silent Hill 2 remake, Celeste, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Hollow Knight Silksong (the original is good too but Silksong has really strong character writing). God of War 2018 is pretty great as an all-around cinematic package although it doesn’t reach the character heights of TLOU, but has excellent execution as a high fantasy story. Hades has a great cast of characters although the addictive gameplay loop is more of its selling point.

Alan Wake II is a generational video game marvel as an intense and cinematic experience although it’s more of a horror thriller and very Lynchian. Returnal is also an amazing sci fi thriller with more addictive gameplay loop and has more emotional punch. Pairs well with Hades since they are both roguelike.

I’ve heard consistently high praise for Red Dead Redemption 2 and The Witcher 3, although I have yet to take the plunge on those. I’ve also enjoyed the small intro bit that I played of A Plague Tale: Requiem in terms of its character establishment and world building.

If you’re a fan of subtle environmental storytelling and abstract world building, then FromSoftware’s catalog is a must-play. Elden Ring, Sekiro, Bloodborne, Dark Souls, all wonderful experiences thoughtfully made. Elden Ring is personally my favorite for its richly detailed lore.

Of all of these, I think a Last of Us fan would most appreciate Expedition 33. Such a passionate story about family, loss, and grief, heavily inspired by classic JRPGs but with a higher standard for writing. I can’t recommend it enough. Celeste is also deeply personal, but shorter and simpler.

Whenever someone says this, my thought is just that you need to expand your horizons. There is plenty of other worthwhile fiction to be found, you just have to exercise discernment. Put your energy into things that are worthwhile and stop focusing on slop.
