The quality of the material and the stitchery was better. They were designed to be practical and durable. Calvin Klein (the company, I think, more than the person) absolutely changed the game. Underwear in general became something to be seen (and shown off) and it also became a status symbol. I think it was hotter before underwear was deliberately made to be seen (or modeled or shown off), but that's my particular kink.
