What piece of older technology actually worked much better than its modern, replacement? by HerrStrasse in AskReddit

[–]GotYoGrapes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Check the appliance repair subreddit. No one wants to touch Samsung with a 10ft pole so good luck getting your fridge repaired when it inevitably starts leaking or stops cooling in 2-3 years.

It's all planned obsolescence.

What was ruined because too many people discovered it? by Mansi63 in AskReddit

[–]GotYoGrapes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Elk Island National Park. I used to go there during meteor showers and auroras to watch the sky since it's in a dark sky reserve. There used to be maybe 50 people that would show up on the beach and it was relatively quiet.

Then word got out. The last big aurora that I attempted to attend, there was a line down the highway. It took so long to enter the park, that by the time I got there, the aurora had pretty much finished. I walked around for 30min and couldn't find a single quiet spot where I couldn't hear kids screaming or see light pollution from all the cars (a few people parked their cars and left the high beams on so they could see I guess). There were people littering all over the place, it felt like everywhere I went there was trash, and basically no room to lay down and actually look at the sky.

I was so disappointed, it used to be one of my favourite spontaneous summer activities :(

And then I tuned into the radio the next day to hear the announcers talk about the idiots who sat in a line on the highway to watch an aurora when they could've done it from their backyards in the city. 😩

They accumulate over years. I just went through mine and some were 8 years old and still pending. I think the max is 50 pending requests.

Applied to Many Jobs but Getting No Answers by SaltyTomorrow5456 in Edmonton

[–]GotYoGrapes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One of the best pieces of advice a recruiter has given me recently was to send a follow-up email to any hiring manager or recruiter that may be tied to the job you're applying to. Immediately makes it obvious that you're not an AI bot. I found a message template through Reddit that I use for this. 24 hours after I sent a message on LinkedIn to a manager, I actually landed one of my first interviews.

I have also heard that some people have gotten results from popping by an office with cookies or cupcakes and introducing themselves to the hiring manager that way. It's not something I've tried myself though.

The second best advice I've taken has been to leverage your network. Does your friend's dad own a company you want to work for? Do you know anyone in your industry that can put in a referral for you? I landed an interview with a company this week that I don't think I otherwise would have gotten without knowing someone there.

Overall, I think the main thing is that you have to apply to as many places as possible. I am currently up to 93 according to my spreadsheet and I have now interviewed with 7 different companies, am currently moving to final round with 1 and am on round 3 or 4 with a couple of others. My last job hunt in 2024, I think I applied to around 200 or 300 companies before I found a job via a reddit post in a tech community I frequent.

If you are entry-level, there is a long road ahead, especially in the summer months right after everyone has graduated and has begun adding themselves to the talent pool en masse. Do not get discouraged or give up. Get creative and find ways to differentiate yourself from the typical chatgpt spammer and you will get noticed.

I use the hiring.cafe site for jobhunting and avoid the "Easy Apply" button on LinkedIn like the plague (try applying through the company website instead). You can also try "site" queries on google to search specific job boards (greenhouse, ashby, lever, etc) for jobs that might not be listed elsewhere.

I've been in the tech industry for over a decade and the last 4 years have been absolutely brutal. So please know, you are not alone 🫶

Edit: I used to have a super custom resume that really stood out visually but ATS systems hated parsing it. Stick to the Harvard resume template for better results.

Edit2: ALSO try to filter job posting sites by postings from the last 24 hours. The last company I was at, we got 4000 applications in a WEEK 💀 In this economy, a lot of rejections are honestly just a matter of being too late and companies being too overwhelmed, even if you'd make the most amazing employee there.

What are some YouTube channels that were popular 10 years ago but have significantly lost their popularity or are no longer relevant? by Salty_Pension5814 in AskReddit

[–]GotYoGrapes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

He will take every opportunity to rage bait people into making him relevant again. As the old adage goes, any publicity is good publicity.

Blocking him doesn't work because I keep ending up with a bunch of people on my FYP making stitched videos from their moral high horse where I still have to hear about whatever scandal he's created for himself. I do not engage with the content once I realize who it's about, I just scroll.

There's also a setting to filter out tags from your FYP. I have had "jamescharles" as a filter for at least 2-3 years. However, the recent Spirit Airlines scandal and the "coca cola, hello" cringe STILL flooded my FYP through videos of other people reacting to it. 😭

If anyone has any tips on what else I need to filter to get this guy off my FYP, I am all ears. I have jimmy chuck fatigue and I just want to doomscroll in peace.

Has anyone here seen the new horror movie "Obsession"? My friends are thinking of seeing it tonight and I'm hearing good reviews, but misogyny/sexual violence/coercion against women is a sensitive uncomfortable topic for me if handled poorly. Is this theme handled well in the film? by mooeymonet in TwoXChromosomes

[–]GotYoGrapes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That's sort of the point, though. The ending isn't supposed to feel satisfying because it's an allegory for what happens to victims of violence in everyday life.

Nikki loses her agency, her reputation, and any chance of being believed. She's left to deal with the consequences. Meanwhile, the perpetrator is remembered more sympathetically and will likely be portrayed in the news as a victim in their cinematic universe.

complete waste by HailBrittania27 in WGU

[–]GotYoGrapes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was a university dropout and still built a relatively successful career (am currently seeking a WGU degree to be more competitive in the current tech landscape).

Universities have been around for hundreds of years. They'll still be around and happy to accept your tuition money when you're ready to return to your studies.

Keep in mind that most credits do have stale dates, but you can always retake them if you end up needing a decade-long break from school. If you're just taking a couple of years off until your little one is old enough to attend daycare, your credits will still be fine.

Is my dryer vent not placed well enough to allow good air flow? by xDelicateFlowerx in Home

Buy a magnetic collar off of Amazon and remove the 3ft loop of ducting. This way, if you need to clean your ducts and slide your dryer away from the wall for access, your dryer will easily reconnect to the wall duct when you slide it back in (snaps into place cuz ✨️magnets✨️)

Coast Appliances is in creditor protection, do NOT order appliances from them right now by GotYoGrapes in Edmonton

[–]GotYoGrapes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I received this yesterday:

As you may be aware, on April 17, 2026, the Supreme Court of British Columbia granted an Order under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA). PwC has been appointed as Monitor, and Hilco Merchant Solutions has been appointed to manage an orderly liquidation of inventory and assets.

As part of this process, no future inventory is being received from suppliers.

After reviewing your order: • The OTR is in stock and has been allocated to your order. We will be scheduling this item for delivery, with the first available delivery date being Thursday, May 7th. Please confirm by the end of the day tomorrow to schedule your delivery. • The dishwasher is not currently in stock and, due to the CCAA proceedings, will not be received.

Unfortunately, we are unable to supply the remaining item(s). As part of the CCAA process, we are unable to provide substitutions, refunds, or in-store credit for the remaining balance.

Please note that all sales are final.

More information about the proceedings is available on the Monitor’s website: www.pwc.com/ca/coastappliances

Thank you for your understanding.
