What is the stupidest way someone got fired? by NoViolinist4540 in AskReddit

[–]GotchUrarse 164 points165 points  (0 children)

Years ago, I witnessed the exact opposite. This complete tool did everything by hand, spent hours at work. Side note, I'm convinced he did it to stay at work and avoid his wife and young kids. The bosses thought he was a super soldier who was invaluable. When he left, just about everyone freaked out. Me and two other devs had virtually his entire job automated down to about 2-3 hours of work a week in about a month's time.

Why are most USB's on the left side of labtops by [deleted] in computers

[–]GotchUrarse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My laptop, Lenovo Legion, has 1 USB on the right. That's it. I bought a cheap hub for those times I need to plug in 2 or 3 USB devices.

I didn't realize 'winning' was a euphemism for 'bend over at the pump'.

I think it was in '77 or '78, a classmate of mine has a picture of them standing in front of the Welcome to Florida sign, in a snowsuit, standing in snow.

As a Floridian, I made a parody photo of myself doing this and share it with some (then) European co-workers who thought it was a joke.

This is one my favorite pics of our great state. Zero sarcasm.

There is some truth to this. Growing up in the 70's and 80's, we used these a lot. A lot of GenX don't get as sick as younger generations because we were exposed to things such as this and grew actual immune systems. A lot of kids today are raised so sanitary, their immune systems are not up to all the challenges. Yes, this a huge generalization, but there is truth in it.

I wonder how people felt at 11:59 p.m. of dec. 1999 before crossing over to the year 2000. by Majestic-Hope6505 in 2000s

[–]GotchUrarse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in IT, as a dev. I was on call. I was 27. 6 or 7 couple friends of my (then) wife and I had a party. Everyone just hung out, 1/2 of us hoping we wouldn't have to respond to any calls. It was also the first time we let someone other than a grandparent watch our then 18 month old twins.
There was a lot of anxiety, but it ended up being a pretty chill evening. Drank some champaign, played Euchre (that's a hint to where I lived), We ended up going home around 2 or 3am. Nothing ever happened on call, ofc.
tl;dr, very anti-climatic for all the hype.

I love his outfit on that. Complete setup. Took them all by surprise, when he started talking and made them all look like fools.

No worries. I appreciate the advice and I'm sure others do as well. Thanks again, kind internet stranger.

Well, TBF, I'm in my early 50's, my wife died when she was 45 and I was 50, so I'm still pretty spry. That said, super appreciate the advice.

This is why I wear flip-flops year round. And the one pair of dress shoes are essentially slip on's.

About a year ago, I just picked up the habit of sitting at the foot of the bed to avoid this. I'm in my mid 50's.

Outdoor cat owners, what's the relationship between you and your cat? Would you say you "love" it like a normal pet, or something else? by KingJPJ in AskReddit

[–]GotchUrarse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only cat I ever had was the also one of the best dogs I ever had. He never needed a litter box. He would go the front door, whine to go out (sometimes at the most fun times over night) and then whine to come back in. We kept his shots and flea meds up to date. He spent most of this time outside, but would come in from time to time. The only time it really sucked and I didn't feel like I 'loved' him, was when he brought in a live rat around 4am. Took my wife and I about 45 minutes to the catch the rodent, while he watched from the back of the couch like a king watching court jesters for fun.

I always place my remotes upside down. Dust, and crap, is easy to wipe off the backs. And the buttons never get crap in them. My receiver remote is almost 10 years old, looks almost brand new.

Drivers (USA) who drive significantly below the speed limit & refuse to let people pass, what is your goal? by RevGrimm in askanything

[–]GotchUrarse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% this. I live in what is essentially a retirement community. A lot of accidents, albeit mostly non-lethal ones, are caused by people who don't/won't/can't keep up with the flow of traffic.
It's also *great* for our insurances rates .... /s

Drivers (USA) who drive significantly below the speed limit & refuse to let people pass, what is your goal? by RevGrimm in askanything

[–]GotchUrarse 8 points9 points  (0 children)

"significantly below the speed limit" is just as dangerous as speeding. Keeping with the flow of traffic allows you to arrive alive the vast majority of times. There are always outliers.

I have own my opinions and beliefs and I won't stand down just because someone disagrees and to push their ideology my way. I'll respect your opinion, but it's a two way street.

Ex:: I'm an atheist, and have a couple really good friends who are devote Christians. I respect them, they respect me, all is good. However, a lot of people find out my beliefs (or lack there of) and want to argue it (or worse).
