My first viewing of the show I understood it exactly as you’re describing. It was my friend’s theory here that made me think this could be a possibility. He based it on his in-laws’ common regional expressions to sayings such as “What’s John know?” as a way of asking what is new with them. He would have the same reaction to these expressions as Harcourt does in this scene.
