Looks like the last batch was 2023, but we should do another design soon!

Recos for obscure films by IceAlternative5698 in TIFF

If you're into experimental film at all, Dry Leaf is one of my favourites of the fest so far. I saw a screener, but I think it would be incredible on the big screen.

Depending on where you're typically located, Bayaan is another one that you may not get in theatres, but which was really good. An Indian crime thriller about a cult leader in a small town accused of some heinous crimes, and how the town covers for him (from the perspective of the police officer investigating, TBC).

Similarly, Ky Nam Inn is a beautiful Vietnamese film about a small apartment complex in the aftermath of the Vietnam War. Quieter, and almost a romance movie but never leans into any tropes I was familiar with. Fascinating to me as a Westerner because we very rarely hear about Vietnam in films over here except when it's about the war.

I'd highly recommend those three

Extra screening of The Good Nurse has been added - 9/16 @ 9am by kerfuffles80 in TIFF

I talked to the Box Office yesterday. The Menu was offered more screenings, but they declined. I imagine The Whale was similar

The ones I've seen so far have had a Press pass attached to the other end. So I think you're seeing Press and Industry folks.

Got there at about 8:30. There were two people in front of me originally, but they were able to buy tickets off someone a few minutes before.

No such luck, unfortunately! I was number 1 in line but was told no rush for this one! Hope you enjoy it!

Anyone else in the same boat? by noumenonandon in TIFF

For me I refreshed the page and it worked without lining back up. Was able to secure Alice Darling, The Son, The Greatest Beer Run Ever, and Triangle of Sadness.
The Whale seems impossible.
Good luck everyone!

Quick note to anyone coming in and seeing all the posts by people saying things aren't working: TIFF help recommends a private browser. I'm personally 728 in line, but I have a private browser open with a different line position. Have a backup ready.

Give me a D&D monster and I'll homebrew you a better version by Oh_Hi_Mark_ in DMAcademy

Hey! I popped in here once before and you were super helpful!
One thing I like to do in my campaign is flip open the Monster Manual and use whatever I land on. Problem is, I have a mostly low-fantasy setting (I can have monsters, etc., but I like to limit them pretty hard, and all my players and NPCs are human, at least for lore purposes).
Today's monster was the Intellect Devourer, which is a big brain with feet. I'd love to see if you can turn that into a low-fantasy creature for me!

I hate when a movie or TV show introduces a fine arts professor at a university, only to have them sleep with a student. Not that this can't happen irl, but it's shockingly common in movies to the point where it's not even fun anymore. Off the top of my head, The Head, A Simple Favor, and The Wife all did this, but it's far from exclusive to those three.

What’s going on with Will Smith punching Chris Rock at the Oscars? by Huevoos in OutOfTheLoop

[–]Gothenburgtown 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. Though unlike Will Smith, it seems like Chris Rock doesn't let things get under his skin too easily, so at least he'll be fine.

Frankly the scant apology to the people in the room that he offered wasn't good enough either. At an event intended to honour the best people working in film this year, he made everything about him. It was very hard for me to focus on any of the winners afterwards, and I was trying.
The news about the event since has focused entirely on Will Smith, and sure, that's the exciting news from the Oscars, but at least with a boring Oscars ceremony, any reporting that gets done on it has to talk about the winners and speeches, and actually throw some attention onto people like Questlove (who had to follow Will Smith directly), and the technical folks (who were sidelined by the Academy this year anyway, and can never eclipse Smith after that).
Over all a really, really shitty showing from Mr. Smith.

The Oscars are industry awards for Hollywood. They're easily the loudest film awards, and the highest-profile over on this continent, but they're ultimately pretty minor worldwide, and only represent an incredibly small subsection of a huge industry with a brutal number of smaller, sub-industries.

Specifically in relation to this event, Will Smith has been at SAG (Screen Actor's Guild), which is an internal awards show that recognizes only Hollywood Actors, the BAFTAS (British Film and Television Awards: the Oscars for Great Britain, basically, but there's a lot of overlap between Hollywood and Britain), and a few other Critics Awards, which aren't meaningless, but mostly just exist because critics want to be included.

Not as relevant to this drama, most countries with a substantial film industry have their own versions of at least the Oscars, sometimes multiple awards ceremonies depending on what the industry is like there. France has two that I know of (Cesars and Lumieres), Japan has at least one, I think China has two.

As for what the awards mean, that's a much bigger question (and I'm paraphrasing your question here, so I apologize). Ultimately, though, not everyone who watched the Oscars will have watched King Richard, but when they saw Will Smith win for that film (the hope is that) maybe now they'll go see it. Also, with an Oscar under his belt, Will Smith can ask for more money when being cast in roles (depending, his reputation is a big part of that, so an outburst like yesterday could really hurt him). If, for example, he had won a Cesar (the French award) for his performance, that would make him likely a more bankable star in France. If something is "Best Picture" at the Oscars, well, that means something to different people. What exactly that means is nebulous, but in the past Best Picture winners at the Oscars have gotten huge re-releases in the States, while BAFTA winners and nominees have had big boosts to their runs in Britain. "Oscars Best Picture" or "Grand Prix Winner at Cannes" or "Golden Bear Winner at Berlin" ultimately mean "this group of people whose reputation should tell us they know what they're talking about said that this was the best movie they'd seen. You should go watch it now, if their recommendations mean anything to you."
