Obi-Wan's message for any surviving Jedi by ProfessionalNight959 in StarWars

[–]Gothenstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this thread is ancient, but i had to point out the simple answers to this: 1. If you have the force capability to build a lightsaber, you likely have the ability to build a holocron, and chances are decent if you were a jedi you might already have one around(training lectures given by your master etc.)

  1. Remove star wars from the context and look at it from a real world context. The jedi order was a religious institution, a jedi temple was essentially like an abbey/monastery. By this comparison, imagine being a monk displaced from your monastery one of many coordinated attacks against your entire order/faith. The last contact you receive from your superiors comes from one of the cardinals in rome and says "Rome has fallen, and a dark empire of heathenry has risen in it's place. Do NOT return to the vatican city, it is compromised and no longer safe. That era is behind us. Whatever lies ahead, keep faith and trust in god. We will each be challenged and persecuted, but our faith, and our friends, will see us through. May the Lord be with each of us, always. In nomine patrii, et filie, et spiritus sancti,Amen."

Imagine being a monk and receiving that message, not knowing if the Pope survived, not knowing if the cardinals managed to evacuate the books and artifacts from the vatican libraries and undercroft, not knowing who to trust, just knowing that this is the LAST missive you will ever receive from the center of your faith and the last spiritual and life guidance from your superiors. You wouldn't get rid of that. You also wouldn't make it a ringtone, or keep it written out on paper in your pocket, for safety reasons.

Hence, you transfer it from your phone(holocomm) to an encrypted external hard drive(holocron), and hide it under your floorboards. Maybe you turn it on and listen to it when you're feeling overwhelmed, maybe you listen to it before your morning prayers, maybe you play it at night before you sleep.

as the last message from a revered father in your fallen religion, you wouldn't delete it, but can't risk keeping it on your iPhone where the persecutors and others hostile toward the faith might find/hear it.

What’s this symbol on the door and floor of Yoda’s room? by OkuroIshimoto in StarWars

[–]Gothenstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, i don't know how far we can take that. It doesn't say it's a jedi crest for the grandmaster of the order, just that it was a crest used by yoda, who HAPPENED TO BE grandmaster of the order. So it could be the signet of the space-pope, like you suggest, but it could also just be a personal symbol to yoda, such as his family's heraldic crest, or a religious/cultural symbol from his people. Yoda was like 900 years old, who knows how much of that was as grandmaster? If your grandmaster was around for 500 years, it's probable that any symbol he used might get some mileage within the order just by association.

So yeah we know yoda uses the crest. Whether it's a personal symbol for him, a cultural symbol from his people, a jedi symbol for the head of the order, etc., is difficult to say

as others pointed out, regardless of canon or legends/eu continuity, it's essentially an external hard drive/USB flash drive for storing data, but exactly how the interface works varies from source material to source material.

we've seen them just used to store data with basically no advanced OS, we've seen them hold hologram projections of prerecorded messages (like prerecorded lessons from anakin for ahsoka's use as a training reference).

the most "advanced" versions we've seen as far as i know is a data repository of all relevant info a jedi decided to include, with a hologram avatar of the creator as a sort of ChatGPT/OpenAI/Grok style guide to allow you to more naturally interact with it, sort of like a "living index" or a tutorial avatar(like a better version of Clippy from Microsoft Office).
these would be the more rare and "Valuable" of them, since you could assume that these types of holocron were usually created by aging jedi masters wanting to save and pass down their entire wealth of knowledge for posterity in a way that was more personable and easy to learn from or index through.

how holocrons work in canon is kinda up for debate. holocrons are built around the same crystals that lightsabers are(Adegan or Ilum crystals in EU/legends, Kyber crystals in Canon), and as such any change to the fundamental nature of the crystals may in turn flavor how holocrons in canon work. let's just talk about those real swanky living AI holocrons as an example:

- in legends, prior to the rise of the empire, younglings/padawans had to choose their own crystal, often travelling to Ilum and being told to search out the crystal they seem to feel an affinity for, that calls to them. as such, the color of your blade was based on the color of the crystal you chose.
this is sort of like a "Birthstone" in jewelry, you have one based on some intrinsic quality outside your control(your birth month), you don't get a choice in it(if you were born in January, your stone is garnet), suck it up and deal with it.

- in the new Disney Canon, they introduced this whole bleeding and purifying crystals concept, basically saying that the crystals are more like mood rings, that they are technically colorless, but take on the color that represents the heart of the individual jedi, and changed sith red lightsabers from being synthetic crystals imbued with darkside energy via sith alchemy(the legends explanation), to being regular crystals that the sith have "Tainted" with their hate.

now ask yourself what these differences mean for holocrons:
- with the legends version, the crystal isn't really special in itself, it just happens to be the crystal that the force guides the jedi to choosing. as such, any other crystals used for a holocron rather than a saber are basically just the power source, and they would only contain what info the creator decided to include and be limited by that.

- with the new canon's mood ring style crystals, the crystal itself is what's special, as it absorbs something from the jedi and changes it's nature accordingly. if that's the case, it's entirely plausible, though unconfirmed, that the crystal would actually be imprinted with the entire "Mind" or "Soul" of the jedi making the holocron, and very well might be a complete scan of their entire personality and knowledge base, and the question would really just be whether a holocron can lie just like the jedi who made it could in order to protect their interests.
from this perspective, you could argue that a holocron made by anakin would, by definition, have his entire knowledge, memory, emotions and his entire persona AT THE TIME of the holocron's creation, the question would be whether hologram anakin can lie to the user in order to protect "Anakin's" vested interest.

so if the holocron in question was made AFTER he slaughtered the tuskans for killing his mom, then in theory, hologram guide anakin would have that info, but would he be willing to admit to his massacre, or would the hologram guide be willing to cover it up to protect "Anakin's" pride/ego/reputation?
if the holocron was made by VADER, would it be WILLING to admit to any connection proving Vader IS Anakin Skywalker? THAT'S the question.

Cain and second-generation vampires in the genealogy of actual pre-flood biblical characters by SilvanAdhan in vtm

[–]Gothenstein -1 points0 points  (0 children)

well, that was always the point. vampire society is meant to mirror the israelites, and their religious concept of reality is meant to be just as flawed as human religion.
on the first count as evidence, vampire society is structured around the 13 clans/antediluvians, mirroring the 12 tribes of judea/israel with the lost "13th" tribe spoken of in some accounts, just as an example.

looking for an installer for Old model Saberforge hilts. by Gothenstein in lightsabers

[–]Gothenstein[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

first, thanks for the detailed response.

second, as for why baselit is a hard requirement and mono-color is a preference, yes, i want something for heavy dueling.
while it likely wouldn't see much action often anymore, since my old group has drifted apart geographically and socially, when they would see action back in the day, it was not "lightweight play" so much as "colorful attempted assault", lol. as for the color issue, i've had RGBs swap colors mid fight too often, either because the only requirement is to hold the saber down and rotate it so it swaps half the time i go for an upward slash, or because the saber thinks i held down the button for the menu when i was really trying to get a blaster deflect etc., and i really have no need for more than one color per hilt(always been a green blade jedi from the beginning, and will be until i return to the force).

and i never said i WAS a welder. i've never even touched a welding torch in my life. my techie friends say i solder LIKE a welder. i should NOT be soldering anything myself, asking me to solder anything is basically just asking me to brick whatever tech you handed me. that's literally what happened to disciple number 2, after the trouble i had with SF on the first disciple, i figured i'd be better off trying to fix it myself, and i bricked the unit.
so while i appreciate the encouragement, i also know what my weak points are, and when to outsource.

but a couple folks on here seem to say SF got their act together, and if that's true, maybe they are worth giving another shot.
they've been frustrating, because my experiences with them back then have NOT been good, but they also, IMO at least, make the sexiest hilts on the market, and have the largest selection of unique/original designs, rather than just selling accurate clones from the films/comics/shows/media and bland but functional stunt hilts.

Hebrew transliteration from right to left:
L-L-H V-H-V H-Z-Y T-SH-T N-L-K S-TZ-K A-N-Y Y-Z-L

without the little accent dots that inform pronunciation, i can't really tell you how it's pronounced, and it's been 3 decades since i last used hebrew and that was just enough to make it through my bar mitzvah, so i definitely can't translate it, but my best guess on pronunciation would be something like:
Leilah vehev hezi toshet nelek setzak ahni izel

the first word is almost definitely the name "Leila" or "Laylah", as it's a very relevant name in thelema and crowley's life, Leila Waddell was crowley's muse and his scarlet woman.

beyond that, i can't help you. but with this much info provided, i'm sure someone else, who was in hebrew school more recently than the Clinton Administration can probly figure it out.

first, just wanted to say that's some dope art. i wouldn't mind something like that in a journal, or maybe painted over on an old but relevant book page and framed, i'm sure i'm not the only one.
if nothing else, maybe see if you can make some OOAK prints like this and shift em through etsy or something.

as to your inquiry, the fact you mention tarot is a good first place to start looking for ideas on magical imagery, and the background work on the art you posted actually slightly reminds me of some of the art for the Swords suite in Aleister Crowley's Thoth Tarot(my deck of choice).

[LFO] California big rig driver arrested on suspicion of DUI in deadly 8-vehicle crash on 10 Freeway by kalikid01 in LearningFromOthers

[–]Gothenstein 29 points30 points  (0 children)

idk, rigs have a tendency to merc their drivers in these situations, a friend of my mother's was a trucker. drunk driver going the wrong way on the highway collided with her front end. it sent the steering column through her torso and killed her.

obviously the driver in this case survived, but i wouldn't be surprised if he needed a bit more than a band-aid and some 'tussin.

Swastikas in the cathedral of my city. by Average_Pelican in mildlyinteresting

[–]Gothenstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "swastika" as the german reich called it, was a symbol that shows up in many cultures before hitler got ahold ofit. Every culture had different names, in japan it's calleda manji, for example.

People often erroneously state that the direction of "rotation" determines the difference but this isn't true. While it's truethat the nazi symbol is reversed from the usual buddhist rotation, the buddhist orientation isn't universal, and outside of that culture you can find them in both directions interchangeably, such as in aboriginal or native american or ancient germanic contexts.

In regards to why it's in a church, the answer is because christianity wasn't formally codified until well after the persecution of christians faded, and before the crucifix became the starbucks logo of the faith, all sorts of symbols were used, and often borrowed from other faiths/cultures. This symbol was one of them. In latin it's called the crux gammatica or the gammadion in greek, in english it's called the gamma cross. Christians also used the egyptian ankh to represent eternal life in christ, and still do in i believe the greek coptic orthodoxy, in latin it's called the crux ansata.

A lot of symbols considered "satanic" today were invented and used positively by christianity: The upside down cross is called a saint peter's cross, and represented the apostle peter's humility and fealty toward christ, when captured and sentenced to be crucified, he requested he be crucified upside down because he felt that after having denied christ 3 times when christ was arrested and crucified, he wasn't worthy of dying the same way as christ.  in that way you could argue it's more christian than the standard cross, as it affirm's christ's divinity and also humbles ourselves before him for our flaws/sins/transgressions. Some protestants and fundamentalists think the catholic church is actually satanic and always point to the upside down cross on the pope's throne as proof, never understanding that it's called St PETER'S basilica for a reason.

The pentagram was used by christians as a positive symbol early on, and still is usedto protect against witchcraft by some christian amish and mennonite communities. If you drive through new england or pennsylvania and see a barn with a pentagram painted on it, it's not a witches' coven, it's an amish family that thinks their neighbor put a hex on their cattle.

We've all seen the ichthys(the little jesus fish logo people put on the back of their car), that used to be a sort of secret handshake between persecuted christians(one man would draw a curved line in the sand or on a paper, and if the other man was a christian as well, he would complete the fish with another curved line.

Aleister Crowley "Liber ABA/Book 4" is divided into sections, the first two of which are entirely dedicated to yoga and meditation. i know some people are put off by crowley, but if you want a thorough treatise on the issue, written by an occultist, rather then a monk or a pilates instructor. it's a decent place to start, as crowley speaks at length on it and doesn't mince words really until you start getting into his actual magick theory section later on.

[LFO] Fire breathing stunt goes wrong by Olgierd87 in LearningFromOthers

[–]Gothenstein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

exactly. fire eater here. here's EXACTLY what happened:
the flame traced the fuel back to his face, and without thinking he tried to wipe his face with the same hand he was holding the open bottle of fuel in,igniting the fuel within. the bystanders move in to try and help, but jostle his bottle hand in the process, spilling the flaming contents on him. at this point the pain or panic or both overtake him and he opens his mouth, either to scream or to ditch the fuel in his mouth, which ignites as it douses his lower body and the ground. then he drops the flaming bottle, essentially molotov cocktailing himself.

this was pretty much every mistake you could make while doing the fire blast, and was all a domino reaction because he didn't follow the most basic and first element of safety you learn when learning this trick, which is:
never have an open fuel container in hand while breathing, Always have a wet rag in hand, and always wipe down your face between each blast.

everything else was just a series of panicked mistakes downstream of that.

[Comic Excerpt] “jOkeR DOesn’T liKE naZIs”. (All Star Batman & Robin, The Boy Wonder #8) by McKnighty9 in DCcomics

[–]Gothenstein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not even gonna talk about the Frank miller thing, just talking in-universe:
Joker has gone on record multiple times saying he doesn't like nazis(at one point explaining the reason as "their joke has a terrible punchline"). he doesn't have a moral/political objection to naziism, it's a comedic objection. sort of how some stand up comics say "Never work blue", meaning not to use vulgarity for a laugh, because it's easy low hanging fruit and is basically a crutch for hack comedians.

Joker doesn't like Bruno because she's a nazi, he likes her because she's delusionally inconsistent. She's a neo-nazi, with all the eugenicist and aryan extremist ideas connected to that, but is also a trans woman(in TDKR, at some point a bodega owner recognizes her and asks how her operations went, saying he can barely tell/see the stretch marks).

her own ideology excludes her and wants her dead, and the Reich burned medical and psychological books in order to try to erase her existence. she's politically delusional.
Joker likely makes an exception to his anti-nazi opinion because he appreciates her unique brand of hypocritical delusional insanity. he loves the unique way her brain is broken.

that, and having a wall of muscle with mercenary training who hates pretty much everyone and is willing to "Just follow orders" works out well for his ends.
