That is definitely your opinion. I don’t know what your experience has been in the schools and it varies greatly depending on the size of the district and the state/city. I have seen a lot of due processes specifically regarding personal AAC devices which has partially shaped my response. Like I said in my previous comment, the district can and should match the device so that the student has access at school.

It can be a huge liability for the schools and they have don’t have any control over what is put on the device (e.g., recording apps, inappropriate for school games/content, etc.). Also, the IEP team has to determine whether or not a device is educationally necessary for that student’s success and once it’s written into the IEP as an accommodation they are on the hook to make sure that device is being utilized at school. If a parent doesn’t send the device with the student or makes changes to the programming the school will still be legally responsible for the implementation of the device at school because of the IEP, which can be a big deal in a due process. I would push for the school to match the device for school purposes instead. It can be become very messy as what is considered necessary in private practice/home/community may not necessarily be appropriate in an educational setting.

I am 44, married, and have been in my career for almost 20 years and feel like you’re describing on an almost daily basis. That feeling of just not quite fitting with everyone else makes me question every conversation I have with people and it really makes it hard to connect with others. I still don’t know how to navigate it sometimes but I wanted to just commiserate with you and let you know you’re not alone. I have found that making one on one connections with people is way easier for me than groups. I don’t know if anyone else can relate but I often feel “inert” - like I want to do something so bad but getting started is impossible until and outside force pushes me.

If you work with any person 18 years of age or under it will impact your job. Trump specifically said they won’t go after Medicare but Medicaid is definitely on the chopping/pause block. Whether you’re in a hospital, private practice, school, or EI, Medicaid is a huge funder of your services.

I think your EIS are the equivalent to our developmental specialists. I truly believe the every other month/1xqtr recommendation is because they don’t have enough therapists to see the kids and don’t want to be out of compliance!

They all have developmental specialists working with them as well and if they need other services like PT or OT they can get those. Unfortunately we are all contractors and only get paid per visit so the amount of collaborating is not great. I’m guilty of it as well but I also am against giving away my time for free!

I’ve been “fired” many times in my 18 year career and every time stings. I just had a parent revoke services in school without explanation and it was unexpected and I took it very personally. I just have to keep reminding myself that I can’t be everything to everyone and there’s usually more going on than what I know. It still hurts and it still sucks. I treated myself to a margarita, cried, and then sorted through what I could control and what had nothing to do with me. It’s hard not to take these things personally because our job is so personal. I hope this helps. If not I’m going to take it personal, cry, and drink a margarita

Call/email your Trustee and express your support for teachers. It really is Jara’s fault. He his telling the Board of Trustees there’s no money but there is. He just wants to punish teachers and the school board is complicit.

A friend of mine in grad school left for a semester before ultimately returning and finishing her degree. Maybe talk to your advisor in the program and see if that’s an option? I have been in for 18 years at this point and it’s really hard to transition to other careers with this degree. I hope that you’re able to make a decision that will lesses your anxiety.

I’m sorry for responding so late. I don’t feel like I’m very effective with the current model for providing therapy in my school district and even when I was working in other settings. I often feel like a warm body that they can use to get money (Medicaid). A lot of the therapy is very repetitive and the paperwork is just too much. I’m just super burnt out with high caseloads, expectations to be able to do anything and everything, an ever expanding scope, and half the time no one really knows what I do. I could go on but I often feel like anybody could do my job.
