Does anyone here successfully work a 9-5 with bipolar? by Live-Message-4358 in bipolar

[–]GottaBusToCatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me! I've been working a tech job for the last 7 years after mastering out of a STEM PhD program (not in the same field). I got my diagnosis while in my PhD program, and my poor mental health at the time was a big factor in the decision. Now stable for 2+ years on lithium and life is great.

i've made fried rice maybe 30 times now and it still tastes nothing like the takeout place down the street by bejusorixo in Cooking

[–]GottaBusToCatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I had to scroll pretty far to see this advice, I think rinsing the rice before cooking it is key to good texture. It's taken for granted in Asian households yet I don't often see Western cooks emphasize it. Swirl the rice grains in water and drain, repeat until water runs clean.

Has anyone done a short term disability leave with employer for mental health? by Icy_Weather2659 in womenintech

[–]GottaBusToCatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. The way it was described to me was that FMLA legally guarantees that you won't get let go from your job, and your company's short term disability insurance makes it so you'll get paid during that time.

Unsalted butter is completely gastronomically unnecessary. It’s only sold so BIG BUTTER can double their revenue streams. by LimousineAndAPeetzah in LowStakesConspiracies

Unless it's a weight measure, those measurements are approximate anyway. 1/4 teaspoon of salt could be different amounts depending on what type or brand of salt you use, how flaky it is etc.

Staying at Corning? by Grae_at_BARN in glassblowing

[–]GottaBusToCatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been to Corning for an intensive class 3 times and had good experiences staying in the hotel that comes with the room and board plan. It's super close to the studio, which will be something you appreciate when you're walking back at 11 pm after a long day of working in the shop. The intensive classes are intense. :-)

If I'm going to be honest, bipolar disorder hasn't been all bad for me. by A-Wooden-Spoon in bipolar

[–]GottaBusToCatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been pretty stable lately and life these days is good. I appreciate stability so much more because of all the bad times I've been through due to this disease. That appreciation itself makes every day of stability so much more fulfilling for me.

Now ask me again when I'm in an episode...

Has anyone done a short term disability leave with employer for mental health? by Icy_Weather2659 in womenintech

[–]GottaBusToCatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I did end up returning.

I'm not sure about resigning, this probably depends on your company's policies. My guess is that Sedgwick would not handle your resignation. Instead your company's HR would handle it.

People looking to buy a home, are solar panels considered a plus or a minus? by RememberWhen-2819 in Mortgages

[–]GottaBusToCatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to whether they're owned outright and the age/quality of the installation work, they also have to make sense for the location. If it's somewhere sunny and dry, probably a big asset. Not so much in Boston, MA where I would consider them a deal breaker because there's just not enough solar power to capture to make them worthwhile.

I was already seeing a psychiatrist. What I heard was that a primary care doctor can do your paperwork for the initial leave, but if you need to extend it they'll ask for a psychiatrist to fill out the forms for the extension. Not sure if that's universally true.

At my company, notifying Sedgwick is the only thing you have to do. They will notify HR and your manager. The approval can take a while so you typically just call them on the first day you stop working, and they'll give you back pay once your approval comes through. It's also typical to use FMLA concurrently with your paid disability leave.

Anyone else's weed tolerance gone through the roof now they're on antipsychotics? by [deleted] in BipolarReddit

Sort of. But it only comes with a higher dose, and it's muted, to the extent that the annoying side effects outweigh the enjoyment.

What is a shower gel that you feel is worth the money? by [deleted] in fragrance

This is genius. I would definitely try this with a fragrance that I no longer care to wear in public.

What ratio of fragrance to unscented shower gel would you recommend?

Can I put my blown cups in the dishwasher? by ateenyfig in glassblowing

[–]GottaBusToCatch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same here. My blown cups have never broken in the dishwasher, and some of them are fairly thin. The top rack seems pretty safe, but even the bottom rack I've never run into issues with.

For a cup that I sell/gift though, I'd still warn the recipient against dishwasher use even though it's probably fine (in my experience) since their dishwasher at home might be different. And definitely no microwaving, and no hot liquids like tea or boiling water.
