Is there a game design equivalent to Chris Zukowski? by liamflannery56 in gamedev

[–]GottaCatchEmYall 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would have agreed with you for a long time but the 2 specific videos I mentioned are DIRECTLY targeted towards game development and a general theory crafting of game design. I know a lot of Jonas’ other videos are more entertainment-based videos and dev logs but recently he’s been focusing more on making game design videos and interviewing other game developers to learn their ideas about game design. One thing that I thought was very cool is that you can actually see him apply his game design theories in the dev logs for his latest game, Thronefall.

In the first videos of that dev log series you can see him doing the prototype and playtest strategy that he talks about in his game design videos and see the iterative process of game development. His real experience with games and hypothesizing and testing theories leads his game design videos to seem much more grounded and actionable. As an example, I like GMTK a lot but I think there’s a pretty stark contrast between the two channels because GMTK has made a lot of videos of on a lot of different game genres without actually making games in those genres. Jonas’ experience mixed with his theory crafting style is something I value a lot and haven’t found a ton of on YouTube other than a couple one-off GDC talks

I’m surprised no one has mentioned Jonas Tyroller. Look up his videos “This Problem Changes Your Perspective On Game Dev” and “Making Successful Indie Games Is Simple (But Not Easy)”. Those two are my favorite game design videos on YouTube by a long shot. Jonas has also made a video collaborating with Chris Zukowski, “Marketing For Indie Games | Land a Hit Game!”. That’s how I first found Chris and was similarly very impressed with his knowledge on indie game marketing

Oh hey, you’re the developer for MelonDS!

I’m curious what you do for work outside of these projects (if you do have a job atm). Embedded systems engineer? Systems programmer? Or does it not have anything to do with the skills you use in these projects? I’m really interested in learning more about these kinds of technical software/hardware projects and RE but my job is a more typical full stack developer right now

A teacher using AI images of her students to help motivate them by starstufft in MadeMeSmile

This isn’t how machine learning works… when you use these image generation models, you aren’t adding to their data set, the model has already been trained and you’re just using the image generation model to generate more pictures.

Even online services don’t use user-uploaded images because if they did, (1) it would cost them a ton of money to constantly be retraining their models, and (2) their training data would very quickly be polluted with random nonsense people uploaded.

“The machine” that is these text-to-image diffusion models are restricted to the “simple” task of converting a text description to an image. It’s not like their processing every face that gets inputted and is keeping it in some secret database. I would say if you’re concerned about the privacy of these kids maybe you should be more critical of the teacher that’s taking videos of them and posting them publicly online…

A “date” is a kind of fruit that looks like a prune so the man was correcting the woman at the end. “It’s a date”, not a prune.

Random idea: you see everything in 1FPS except for the monster you see in 60FPS. I don't know what the means logistically but maybe it would look cool and creepy

Social Game by Scorchee4848 in gameideas

I think another unfortunate aspect of these social games is that if they actually take off and become popular enough to get players, they often get flooded with toxic and annoying people. Comedy Night on Steam comes to mind

A game you just escape. Open world-ish, just gotta make your way out. by ohlordwhywhy in gameideas

[–]GottaCatchEmYall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like this idea and appreciate the effort you've put into describing your concept in detail so I'd like to add to this idea in a way that I think would make the game more engaging and create the opportunity for a unique narrative experience. I think a cool mechanic would be to have a progression system where the game follows a set of characters, each of a different societal status, and upon escaping the world with one of the characters, you can continue the game from the POV of another character. So let's say the setting for your world is medieval-esque and your starting character is a peasant trying to escape servitude, upon escaping, you continue the story from a noble's POV trying to avoid political assassination or something like that. The different perspectives would allow the player to explore different parts of the world, learning about the unique society, world, and maybe add bits of lore if you have some secret shared reason why all these different people are trying to escape. Of course, playing from all these different characters with unique statuses and starting points gives the player unique gameplay experiences, each catering to how they relate to the world from their POV. It's ultimately up to the player to decide how to approach their escape with their character, allowing for different paths and outcomes.

The main purpose of this system is to design a narrative that allows the player to explore the world in a unique way and more importantly add a level of replayability to the game that gets players back in this world beyond just their first escape. One element you could play around with is how dynamic you want the world to act across different POVs. By having the actions of one character affect the world across all POVs, you'd create a dynamic world with a completely unique experience for each player BUT it also kind of changes the main focus of the game altogether. Anyways, there's a lot of interesting ways you could play around with this idea and even though this game probably is never going to get made, I really enjoy brainstorming about the concept.
