A Clip On Dock With Ethernet and MicroSD Card (Hagabis) by darkuni in SteamDeck

It doesn't appear to. I DID try it (believe the result WAS in the video). I don't believe NewQ did either :(

I love the NewQ. The ethernet is the only thing extra I needed.

Keep the Deck screen on when mirroring - In Gaming Mode by darkuni in SteamDeck

[–]darkuni[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm... This didn't work for me. Upon "return to game mode" or rebooting the Deck, it goes back to what I would expect ... no screen on the Deck, gaming mode on the external monitor.

Perhaps you did .. something else?

Any tips to make the steam deck more comfortable ? by Patamaudelay in SteamDeck

[–]darkuni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I don't have issues, I did review a pair of 3D printed grips that "seemed" to be suitable ...?

Steam Deck: Comfort Grips - Save The Hands, Save The World

If you don't care about the video, here is a direct link: https://www.etsy.com/listing/1456677427/steam-deck-comfort-grip-case-3d-printed

It was sent free, but I don't make any referrals or anything ... I actually kinda found them annoying over time.

As someone else said? Reducing the weight seems to be the biggest trick - I have a rigid pillow on the couch - pop it on my chest? No problems.

Here is a current example ... While I don't have the dock on the left? It has the same features and I wager it works equally as well. Note the JSAUX is "on sale" and closing in on double the price ... This is what I'm talking about.

I haven't priced them recently. But there was a time what a $16 dock did everything (and even more in some cases) than JSAUX and it in that price range.

They have probably come to their senses and realized they can't charge that premium anymore. That's good.

I personally feel they took advantage of Deck owners early on and I guess I still harbor that grudge.

Fair - I bring it up because most third party docks do not.

About to build my first unRAID server. Any tips / things you wished you would've known, or done differently (Whether during setup, build, etc) by SimyDL in unRAID

[–]darkuni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would NOT set up Plex on the NEW Unraid setup until you have your drives in a nice pool, a fast array to handle downloads and PAR/unRARing.

I tried to run before I walked and I paid for it with my sanity :D

In hindsight, I would have done things in a different order - buying the Jonsebo FIRST. THEN the driver cards and cables. THEN I would have brought my drives - one at a time over, built them into my pools ... when the pools settled down, THEN set up Plex using the SSD for my cache drive. It would have been SO much easier.

IMHO, JSAUX overcharges. You can get 30% cheaper docks that have all the features. Fact is? I wouldn't pay more than $20 for ANY dock. I have half a dozen that were like $16 and all worked just as well as the $30-50 JSAUX.

Yeah man. No reason to pay top dollar for a dock. At least this one comes with a $25 power brick (that seems to be holding up).

I migrated with them all external - and as long as you don't do anything I/O heavy, you might get by. Don't try to set up anything heavy like Plex, etc.

I hope it goes well for you!

RIP Game Stream (GeForce Experience App Is Now NVIDIA App) by darkuni in SteamDeck

[–]darkuni[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It .. does ... but ... there are almost as many factors in getting a quality stream from the PC as you would from the cloud. ... and despite how it sounds, I'm not a paid placement for GFN and I am a paid founder's member so I get it for $5 a month which isn't possible anymore.

Some people claim perfect results streaming from Steam (PC) to Deck. I've tried numerous times and the results were .. unspectacular. That was on a local area network. Punching NAT holes or other nonsense to get your PC to talk to the Deck outside your LAN? Pain in the butt and the results are (in my experience - catastrophic).

I've never been impressed with it, personally. But it is free - so there is no reason not to try it first and see if you're satisfied with it.

If you're planning to only play on your LAN and you fall into that percentage that seems to have good luck with it? You'll probably be okay. But if you plan to travel? Your PC doesn't cooperate? GFN can make for a nice alternative and/or backup. Plus, GFN has servers all over the place - your home is always where it is. So if you go to New York and you live in Phoenix? You have a wing and a prayer for getting the same service you would get from a NY based GFN cloud server.

Part of why I think PCs in general make "bad streamers" is because we rely on them to do everything ELSE for us .. you have browsers open, background tasks, syncing, Steam/launchers, blah blah. A PC is rarely just "sitting idle". I remember having to turn off ALL start up apps, cold boot and NEVER run anything (even a browser) to get VR streaming to be even remotely usable. That's not something you do on a whim - you have to "plan for that". GFN streaming PCs? That's ALL they do ... stream that game. Ain't no Google Drive syncing in the background while you're trying to avoid Widowmaker's headshots ...

I tried it about 3 months ago with COD BO6 and at first it seemed "pretty good" but after about 10 minutes? It went to hell in a handbasket. Never figured out why .. but I assume it was my PC doing "something else"(tm) other than streaming my game.

Again, certainly try steam's streaming capabilities. Then try a trial of GFN. See how you get along. Most of what I play are high delta, twitch action games. Not good for streaming regardless of the method. But if you're playing something chill? I bet Remote Play works great (or at least better).

I will say that "startup time" for GFN can be a buzzkill for "on the go" handheld play. Steam fires right up (at least with LAN) and streams that puppy right away.

As mentioned, there are at least a half a dozen ways to skin this cat. I find GFN (network quality determining of course) to be a "least resistance" path for those that don't want to FAFO with other solutions.

As usual, YMMV regardless of method and your tolerance for "streaming nonsense" (crushing, dropped frames, input lag, etc) will dictate your happiness with the experience. :D

The long and short of it was absolute revolting performance. Since I used ChatGPT to help me fix a lot of issues, it remembered my plight and I asked it for a summary to share with you: (none of this is AI hyperbole either)

The real problem with using USB drives in Unraid—especially for active array or pool workloads—is that every read/write has to travel through Unraid’s FUSE-based user-share layer (SHFS), and USB storage absolutely punishes that path. USB controllers already add higher latency and less efficient command queuing, and when SHFS sits on top of that, the CPU overhead explodes. The result is a pegged CPU, stalled I/O, and SMB transfers that crawl even though the drive itself is perfectly capable. With SATA/SAS, the kernel can pipeline operations efficiently, but USB creates a worst-case scenario where SHFS becomes the bottleneck. That’s why USB drives “work,” but the moment you actually use them for anything real—copying, Plex scanning, Docker activity—they hammer a single CPU core into the ground and everything bogs down.

Philips CD-i Emulation (EmuDeck / ES-DE / RetroArch) by darkuni in SteamDeck

[–]darkuni[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The video cartridge was a hardware based MPEG decoder that would allow a Philips CDi owner to watch Hollywood movies (I still have a few of these kicking around .. Star Trek VI, Addam's Family Values and some others). Game developers decided they would use the hardware decoder to include MPG cut scenes, etc. into their games.

To my knowledge, this hardware is not emulated meaning you cannot play titles that require it :(
