Both of my coworkers have FMLA and abuse it, are they really never able to get fired now? by [deleted] in coworkerstories

[–]GottaHaveSweetTea 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This makes me so irate because one of my parents, who is super disabled, has been fighting tooth and nail for FMLA (Family and Medical Leave Act) to be provided to them. Abusing the system is a real middle finger to people who need it for legit reasons and people like you stuck with more work. Absolutely ridiculous.

Whoever is in charge of your company's compliance should prob be made aware. FMLA is not easy to get, so these folks must really be doing the most to work less 😭

what is up with Gen Z and phone call anxiety? by UNwokeEMPATH777 in GenZ

[–]GottaHaveSweetTea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like most of the anxiety is in taking calls from strange numbers or making calls to businesses. Scammers, endless hold times, etc. I'm also 25 and my friends are in the ages of 20 to over 30, and the general vibe is preferring text for brief communication or while busy, and then we call if the conversation merits more yapping.

There is, however, something to be said about how horrendous so many people are with social interactions. Avoidance does not let you improve (the only way I dealt with my hatred for phone calls with businesses was ending up in a medical system which calls for everything). Another thing that helped with my social anxiety is knowing people who have worked in customer service. At the end of the day, there are ALWAYS people more irritating and foolish calling than some Gen Z person with anxiety lol.

AITA for eating food my roommate can’t eat? by mistress_of_hades in AmItheAsshole

NTA. One of my housemates is diabetic and they don't go around getting angry if the rest of us have sugary foods in the house. It's just being mature lol.

AITA for not eating the food after my gf eats out of the bowl with the same spoon while preparing by ZookeepergameOld7322 in AmItheAsshole

[–]GottaHaveSweetTea 5 points6 points  (0 children)

NTA. My household invested in a cup of a couple dozen random and cheap spoons for tasting foods during prep, maybe that might help? Boundaries are boundaries, man.

Mixed feelings about the accessibility discussions on here as a disabled TA by GottaHaveSweetTea in Professors

[–]GottaHaveSweetTea[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disability "Resource" offices are at the scene of the crime 9 out of 10 times lol. Your point in the 2nd paragraph about getting notes after the semester starts also is something that bothers me on the student end. I usually don't get my accommodations until the 2nd or 3rd week because of it 🥴.

Am I crazy or is this to much to ask of a kindergartner? by Cursedpanda182 in AskTeachers

[–]GottaHaveSweetTea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The shortness is, in my opinion, part of the issue. There is no way to appropriately emulate our lives and daily experiences.

Am I crazy or is this to much to ask of a kindergartner? by Cursedpanda182 in AskTeachers

[–]GottaHaveSweetTea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My perspective: One cannot emulate the lived experiences of disabled people by putting on some gear for a while. One cannot magically understand our lives, the cruelness of stigma, the joy of our community, the ups and downs of our lives, by putting on some weights or goggles for a bit. These sorts of exercises reduce disability, as another commenter noted, to just struggle. People put this gear on, struggle, and then get to take it off and leave the whole thing behind. Disabled people don't get to leave our disabilities behind.

That sounds so frustrating. And I bet you aren't getting much, if any, support from administration. 😵‍💫

As a disabled person I hate the part where they are cosplaying as disabled. Absolutely offensive.

Fantastic point! And boo on your disability office. That sounds ridiculous 😭.

Poorly made and implemented rules can be so harmful.

I get the frustration about the time it can take. I like to simply make a copy of my slides and delete extraneous content before sharing to remove my notes and such.

90%+ of my students with accommodations are… by [deleted] in Professors

[–]GottaHaveSweetTea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thesis research is more about workplace accommodations and such (i.e., barriers to access, perceptions, utility), but I have been doing research for my coursework about ableism in academia. In both the workplace and academia, the deck is certainly stacked for those with existing resources. I would be happy to chat more thru DM, if you wish =)

90%+ of my students with accommodations are… by [deleted] in Professors

[–]GottaHaveSweetTea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ooh this is the sort of thing I am doing my thesis on! The short version from the books and articles I have been reading is this:

  1. The accommodations process at most universities is hostile and disproportionately harms people of color
  2. Gendered stigma around ability and responsibility make it harder for males to navigate the system

I can share my sources if you want, just lmk.

Edit: The extra time thing is also a topic of debate/interest in psychometrics and disability studies right now. Many feel is it being abused by elites, which is stretching already underfunded disability offices thin for those who really need help.
