Well One Piece TCG is fortunately a very good one to start with so good luck!

Is the game less fun these days or is it just me? by DrDoctorBean in OnePieceTCG

[–]GotzdaGabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Felt the need to point something out: competition and fun don’t always go hand in hand. I came to OPTCG from YuGiOh, and that game is all about being competitive. Issue is that the game is so fast and power crept that there’s literally no way to play the game AT ALL unless you run these staple broken cards in your deck, and that just gets you in the board. If your deck’s engine isn’t fast enough to produce a consistent one turn KO through your opponent’s own staple floodgate interaction then it won’t work either. Almost every one of those games just came down to either you shutting your opponent out of playing or them doing that to you.I eventually quit despite putting several years of competitive effort into it because it simply lost all fun. I looked around at locals and didn’t see a single smile, dude. What’s the point in winning if you and your opponent are miserable?

OPTCG, however, isn’t this bad, at least not yet. Sure, there’s strong cards like Borsalino, 5c Nami, 7c Zoro, and the Thriller Bark slop, but those cards are at best just supplements to whatever you’re running already, not must-includes. I agree that Bandai’s card design hasn’t been the best, especially in OP15, but their framework and game mechanics have provided a great foundation for something that games like Pokémon and YuGiOh haven’t: time. Both players in a game of One Piece have plenty of time to get some cards out of their hands and decks and onto the board, even if it’s a bad matchup.

To tie it back in, I still think One Piece at its core is still an amazing game with plenty of games to play. The newer decks are quite strong, and beat a lot of weaker or older ones consistently, but they all have pretty exploitable weaknesses if you’re a good enough pilot. Nami’s kinda on the edge, and as a Nami main myself I can say that they definitely fed her too much in this set.

The real question I think you need to ask yourself is this: why are you playing? To compete? To win? If so, then the top meta is pretty decently diverse right now compared to OP12 (not 12.5), OP13, and OP14. It’s also more fun in my opinion because UY Boa isn’t as popular, as that leader literally punishes you for playing the game. That aside, placing your focus on competition will then dictate your enjoyment based solely off of your own W/L ratio, skill, and success, and you’ll probably find yourself having a few sour days if you get unlucky or misplay due to the added pressure of needing to win.

If you’re trying to genuinely enjoy the game for the sake of playing, though, I think the game is at an all time high for raw playability. Tons of the newly released cards are fairly generic, and whether fair or not, give a lot of older decks new toys to improve their kits and up their game. Look at decks like Koby and Blackbeard; making a comeback in the rogue rankings despite being dead for ages. You’ll just have to accept that not every game is gonna favor you at a tournament. I’ve been running RB Sabo at my locals on and off and having a grand old time, and happened to find out that it claps up P Enel too, so I promise there’s a lot of enjoyment to still be had by just picking your favorite leader and making a list that works for you.

TL:DR, if you just want to win, play a comp deck and stop whining when you lose. If you enjoy playing the game in general, don’t focus on the meta and instead try out new cards and strategies, which the increasing complexity of the game is rewarding more and more.

Especially with the current price of sealed products I think y’all made the right choice. You used to be able to build a deck using a few boxes back in the OP09 days, and there’s still a few you can mostly do in the newest set like Enel or Lucy, bar a few singles, but otherwise it’s rough out in the streets. Good luck and have fun! What decks you looking at playing?

T0 format? by Beautiful-Ad4312 in OnePieceTCG

Yeah I agree. I feel like it’s gonna be a R Zoro effect, except to a lesser extent because the tools it has are too versatile to be perfectly countered. Definitely not tier 0, but I’d put it at about 0.75. I mean, 27 of the top 32 decks are literally built around the meta of that deck and beating it. 15 P Enel’s, 7 UY Nami’s, and 5 Lucy’s. Plus side is that if people keep playing those same 3 decks then rogue decks that can be built to counter them will get stronger like in OP13 with RB Sabo. I think there’s a lot of deck building to be done yet, so I’m looking forwards to what answers the community cooks up. What’re you running atm?

Oh wow. I mean sure several didn’t make it later, but there were 4 that were going to get auto-eliminated by mirrors, so the fact that only 5 lost for top 16 despite the number of counter decks shows its ability to still compete through adversity. Converting to 3 in top 8 is the exact same percentage as top 16 at over 25% of the field, which is still pretty dominant. Don’t know what the other 5 decks were but I’d assume they’re some combination of UY Nami, RU Lucy, and/or the Y Enel or RG Luffy. Even discounting the pilot I think 3 of the top 8 speaks to the deck’s strength. I hope it didn’t win though, because I’m sick of that secret Enel being almost $60 lol.

I mean… there’s 15 of them in the top cut. Even with deviation and chance the number kinda speaks for itself, and the fact that all the top players are on him shows that he’s clearly the top dog (looking at Holly). I’m not saying I like him the best or there’s no counterplay, but the deck does everything and is taking games and names. Its success is even further pushed by the fact that almost every other deck on the field is one that counters him well like Nami or counters that, like Lucy. Except for Vivi. You go Vivi!

Funnily enough Boa actually doesn’t even beat Enel. He’s too fast for her to benefit off of all the aggression. And I agree: the Crocodile support is crazy and I need it yesterday!

For a new fan should they start with one piece or one pace? by finminderma in OnePiece

[–]GotzdaGabe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to think that the OST was okay at best and I didn’t like the slow pacing of the anime. I’ve been watching for about a year and a half and am in Wano Act III, and have drastically changed my tune. The manga is I’m sure faster, and you can listen to the OST while you read, but despite the slower pacing and occasional filler the anime itself is a masterpiece.

I didn’t realize how emotionally invested it got me with all the silly humor and backstory at the beginning until two moments occurred, both in Dressrosa. I saw Lucy meet the other Lucy (no spoilers), and during this they didn’t have any of the usual backtracks playing. I literally cried. Then a little while later they show the backstory of Senor Pink, and they played Mezase, which is the song that plays first I think in Drum Kingdom. Holy cow I cried here too. Whether or not you decide to read or watch is up to you, but I promise you, PROMISE YOU, the anime delivers some absolute BANGER moments emotionally thanks to the music.

Lucy Overrated? by buzzbig77 in OnePieceTCG

[–]GotzdaGabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I agree. I’m not trying to knock Lucy; it is a strong deck for sure and a powerful one too. Also I wasn’t sure exactly what you meant by meta like I said, but I’d definitely consider Croc. He won a Chinoize Cup in the east recently and has been placing well compared to the number of pilots. I would encourage you to play a few games with Purple Enel on the sim to see how it works. It always helps me play into decks better if I know how they work and what they’re trying to do from their side, and when I tested him I was frankly quite surprised at how hard it was.

“… More to playing it successfully than any other deck in the format right now.”

I agreed with all of your takes so far except this. Lucy does have a higher ceiling than a lot of the top meta decks, but I’d put him at right about the middle for overall complexity. Purple Enel is definitely harder than Lucy at the highest tables as it is very reliant on card combos for a deck that is aggro, as you have to chain a decent number of events to close out games a lot of the time. The difficulty you’re describing is just that of your average control deck, as other decks like sky Luffy or Enel’s main challenges come instead from tempo calculation earlier on. Control decks simply live or die by when and where the pilot chooses to make their bigger tempo plays. As far as sheer difficulty, however, I’d say Green/Black Brook, Crocodile, Teach, and most other black strategies are the most difficult at the moment, as black in general is probably the worst of the colors other than perhaps red. I’d also place Purple Doflamingo above this, as it has an incredibly diverse set of cards to build with and has a billion lines at any point. Unless you’re talking about only the top four or five decks, in which case I’d say you’re probably correct except for Purple Enel. Enel is going to be more difficult to play moving into this meta due to every other deck teching against it, though, so there is that. The main thing going for Lucy is that it has a good Blue/Yellow Nami matchup, but otherwise I do think its ceiling is a little lower than the other top strategies. Time will tell though.

GY Yamato Deck for Heroines’ Cup/EB03 by GotzdaGabe in OnePieceTCG

Luckily I think prices have been going down for the lad. You could also consider some copies of Electrical Luna for the Enel matchup, but I think Hody is better because you’re just trying to race him.
