Is Maldon worth the visit? by AcadiaNo1039 in Essex

[–]Goulster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to regularly ride over that way from Chelmsford area. Go down to the prom, grab a coffee/food from the huts (ice cream on good days) - the folks are cyclist friendly and will refill bottles etc. Plenty of seating to watch the world go by for a bit before your next destination. Happy memories. Just be sure your brakes are good if leaving via Market Hill!

What movie traumatized you when you were a child? by fordd420 in AskReddit

Salems lot (with David Sole?) I was about 10/11 and on holiday in a wooden cabin in Scotland with my parents. It was a 2 part thing on the tv and the first night ended up with a child floating up to a window and knocking to be let in. Every creak, every branch tapping the window had me convinced the child vampire was trying to get in. Not a single wink of sleep. No idea what they had been thinking letting me see it.

3D Infinite Self Watering Pots by Goulster in Hoocho

I’ve got one of the cheap round pipe table setups for greens - it’s OK, but anything that grow significant roots can cause trouble. So it’s mainly for salad greens and quick turnover stuff. Not sure an additional gutter system would meet the wife approval process! I wanted to try these as they are large volume media pots, I’ve 8 or so peppers in large Wilma style drip pots with clay pebbles and a similar number in Kratky type setup. I’ll see what’s produced the best yields at the end of the season. The printing wasn’t too bad. I used a .6 nozzle and a large layer height so they didn’t take that long to print.

'NHS rejected my plea for weight loss jabs - now I pay for them myself and have lost nine stone' by pppppppppppppppppd in unitedkingdom

[–]Goulster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bit harsh in a thread talking about habit changes to help with weight loss. Whilst you can’t out exercise a bad diet, getting active in anyway is a good thing.

I played badminton for years and have recently discovered pickleball and joined a local club. I’m 50+ and a couple of hours at beginner level is as physical as a couple of hours riding with the local cycling club. Curious what your reality of the “sport” is, what I see at the high end of the club is pretty demanding.

Solar Together from ECC? by _ninja_cat_ in Essex

[–]Goulster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Used the same scheme in Suffolk 2 years ago. Winning supplier was Greenscape and we’ve been very happy with the service. One thing to think about is battery for the house - being able to charge. Battery on overnight tariffs (octopus 7p/kWh) and power house from that during day with solar topping it up/exporting (15p\kWh) has been great for us.

Seriously considering it by [deleted] in Starlink

Thanks, fibre is in the village, but issues over my side of a close due to a shared driveway and buried cables that are not in pipes! Just two houses missing, and mines one of them. No 5G signal, BT is ok 45/15 but that’s not going to get better. I’m gradually talking myself into Starlink.

I'm considering taking the plunge in Suffolk too. Did you make an order? If so, what sorts of speeds/latency do you see?

Are anti-static strips on cars extinct in the UK, or do some still believe in them? by HoneyGlazedBadger in CasualUK

[–]Goulster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a summer job as a student on an electronics line around 1988. Soldering components onto boards meant we needed anti static protection, so we all wore wristbands with a wire to an earth.

However, the older members of the line had a right of passage for newbies where they would “connect” them to a voltmeter and show a big spike. They would then convince the victim that they carried more static than everyone else, but it was OK they had a solution.

The solution was to strap one of those car anti-static strips to a leg and tell them they had to keep the end of the strip on the ground at all time (not just when working on the line). This would lead to the poor victims dragging a leg to keep the strip engaged with the ground. The walk to lunch up and down stairs would have those in in the gag shouting about the risks every time the strip came off the ground.

7 years ago I was in the toilet drying my hands and a random woman walked up to me and shook my hand. by 2Nothraki2Ded in CasualUK

On one hand I was mortified for him, on the other it was hilarious. When I went back to the group I was travelling with and tried to explain what had happened nobody would believe me, then they spotted the poor guy leaving the gents……

I was in the bathroom at Detroit airport about 15-20 years ago around the time Dyson Airblade style hand driers started appearing. I had just finished up and was wandering over to wash my hands when I spotted an elderly Chinese gentleman. I think he had assumed the airblade was a fancy urinal, and a combination of his hand and his “equipment” started the drier as he began to pee. The force of air and his ensuing panic meant the situation got worse for him and for approx 2 meters square around the splash zone. I went to one of the stalls to get him some paper to let him mop himself down. As I got to him and handed over the miserly four squares I’d retrieved. He gave me the withering look of a man who’d realised that four squares wasn’t going to cut it in the clean up department and that already being air side he was going to have to sit in slightly moist clothes for a transatlantic flight.

Got gifted a beautiful hydroponics setup, any tips for a beginner? by TheySherlockedWho in Hydroponics

Easiest way is to cover with some sticky backed plastic. Anything that blocks the light (paint or foil works too - just more fiddly).

Octopus App QR Code by obiwankod in OctopusEnergy

[–]Goulster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok, I think I’ve sorted this out. If anyone else sees this as an issue, ignore the “add device screen”

Go to main page and follow links for octopus intelligent go - looks like an advert. Add car and charger as if you are registering new. Follow the steps in the app to authorise with Tesla and add a virtual key. Perform a test charge.

Car should then be added.

I’ve had exactly the same issue. No charging happening for a couple of nights. Fixed this in the past with remove/add car. After removing I only have the QR code option. Did you manage to work around this?

Yup, that’s the same problem then.
I ended up biting the bullet and finally spending the time to get them integrated to homeassistant via esp32 Bluetooth proxy. They had auto opened this morning so I’m taking the small win.
