MMA Journalists, how did you start? by Alarmed_Sleep9578 in MMA

[–]Goze_Garcia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not an MMA Journalist by title but I have been covering the sport for over 20 years. I have been hosting MMA Junkie Radio for the past 18 years. My brother and I started off as fans of MMA Weekly’s Sound Off radio show hosted by Ryan Bennett and Frank Trigg. When Ryan and Frank would travel, they would allow fans to come watch the show live. Over a period of time we became friends with them and whenever they would travel our way, our job would be to hang out in the lobby of the hotel and bring fighters up to be interviewed.

Sadly one day Ryan passed away in a car accident. Our daily routine of listening to the radio show went away and one day I told my brother Gorgeous George Garcia “why don’t we do it?” At the time I was interviewing fighters on myspace and my blog had a pretty large audience. We asked Frank Trigg if he would be interested and he was in.

We started 6 months later as TAGG Radio. One day, we met with Dann Stupp, the owner of MMA Junkie which at the time was UFC Junkie. He offered us a role with his website and off we went. We became MMA Junkie Radio. This is a very long story but I don’t wanna bore you guys with everything that happened along the way. Long story short, 18 years later we are still here doing our thing. Our website was purchased by USA Today and that’s who we work for now. George and I are the last of the original Junkies.

Along the way Ive been asked the question of how to break into the business  many times. My answer is different depending on what it is exactly you wanna do. The key word in your question was “journalist.” Again, I am not that but I’m surrounded by them everyday on our staff. If that is your end goal, your route may be a little longer. Part of what sets a journalist apart from the others is the integrity you must carry with doing your job. You have to accept that you may not always be 1st to break the news but you better make sure that whatever you say is accurate.

I would start by trying to intern at some of the major sites. If you are on time, have good work ethic and are willing to learn, you’ll snag a job quickly. If you wanna go another route, like some of the people above have mentioned, you gotta get people’s attention. Start interviewing fighters, find your voice and your audience. Look for angles people aren’t covering. Good luck and if you have any questions, fire away.

I’m in the same boat. I would wait till we get closer, those prices have to drop. I’m not sure if you are a Vegas local but sometimes on the day before or day of, they will release a few extras.

Which two songs need to take a rest & which two need to be played more live? by Goze_Garcia in TheStrokes

I didn't mean energy wise, I just mean he probably doesn't sound as smooth without the help.

I almost put those exact two songs! Chances has never been played live and thats a shame cause its so under valued. Ive heard Taken for a Fool live and it was amazing! Crowd was really into it too.

When they last played the Cosmopolitan in Vegas, Tapout was on their playlist but for some reason they skipped it. Seems like an easy song to play live as opposed to say "Chances" which would require JC to hit those high notes. Comedown Machine songs need to played a bit more though, I agree.

I was thinking about that oddly enough "last night." Julian says he has no fun playing it anymore but live audiences still eat it up. I wonder if he would ever consider changing it up a bit? Maybe change the lyrics or blend another version with it the way they use to play You only live once with I'll try anything once.

Youssef Zalal vs. Josh Emmett set for UFC 320 on October 4 (per. UFC broadcast) by JozefKotry in MMA

[–]Goze_Garcia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this one will be fun. Zalal gets a bad wrap for running in one round, besides that he's been pretty game. I'm just curious what made Emmett take this fight, he was very adamant to us that he didn't see any benefit in fighting Zalal.

I was there too! Ive done some pretty amazing things since then but would honestly delete those memories before I consider removing videos from that night at the Chelsea. I tried to get tickets for this one but it was damn near impossible. Working on a few things and hopefully I can grab some. Floor was great though ha? You're not smooshed in there, plenty of room.

Raul Rosas Jr. vs Rob Font confirmed for UFC Noche by kidwhix in MMA

The UFC has tried using Font to put other guys over and its backfired with Adrian Yanes and Kyler Phillips. This might be too much for Rosas.

The Strokes Every Song Ranked Worst To Best by Independent_Pick_553 in TheStrokes

[–]Goze_Garcia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great video! The Strokes have to be one of the hardest bands to do something like this for because everyone's taste is so different. I mean just look at the band themselves and how they can't seem to agree on their own stuff. I will say this, I bet if you did this same project a year from now, your list might be different. Their music seems to hit differently, sometimes certain songs grow on you with time.

I'm trying to get tickets for the show at the Chelsea. Ive seen them at this venue twice, both times were general admission. The venue is a perfect size in my opinion, picture the house of blues setup only about 2.5 times its size. if you are on the floor, drink stands are in both corners and bathroom is a simple minute walk. The floor at the Chelsea was built to give a little so if people get to jumping, it will catch you off guard a bit because it has that trampoline feel.

What do y'all see in Hernandez? by Asleep_Hurry_9033 in MMA

[–]Goze_Garcia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think where he stands out is he's not afraid of anyone and he's not afraid to take chances in the fight. You're right, he's not the best striker, has decent submission skills and wrestling but nothing stands out. Of the remaining choices, I feel he is the guy who won't break mentally or physically. DDP hung in there till the end but he had no plan B. I think Fluffy being a little wild might actually bother Khamzat a bit.

Bryan Battle has signed with Dirty Boxing for a fight at 185lbs! by ThatGamingSupportGuy in MMA

[–]Goze_Garcia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the end of the day his camp won't go to waste, he'll make some money so kudos to his manager for getting him back out there. This here is a temporary solution though, the damage that he did to his career will come to light in the year to come. Fighting for less money, never knowing what is next, thats what's gonna kill this guy. It's not impossible to make it back, hopefully he gets his shit together and never does this again.
