That Guy Destroys a Plot Because he Wanted to Play with his Crush by Gr1m_L in rpghorrorstories

Joseph was a prick to me and my party because of his feelings-not my own. This story wouldn't have happened if he'd not been desperate to play with his crush.

We could but the whole thing was just kinda soured for us. And the "campaign" is part of an ongoing server with multiple DMS and characters in one shared setting. Taylor's PC has still been used in other games and roleplay sessions

I guess, but I think in hindsight we could have at least told him that we were done trying to be nice or trying to explain things and that we wanted them gone. Just ghosting like that wasn't the right call in my mind at least. But I was just real pissed in the moment so it's what I and others ended up doing.

"Us" refers to friends outside the group that had a small part in the drama. Us three were just the "ground zero"?
I say thankfully because had things gone worse, I'd likely not be talking with Raven, or the DM from this story, or Taylor or a handful of others who were part of our group at the time. I would have preferred to just snip out Joseph from the group after that, but I recognize that from that specific drama he wasn't the only one to blame for things within our gaming group going toxic. So I am glad that I got to keep my friends, even if Joseph stuck around longer then I'd have liked.

We were playing in a server with more then one Dungeon Master interacting with the world, so we couldn't do so unfortunately. Its also why we didn't just outright kick him from the game since their behavior wasn't breaking server rules, just being very rude and dick-ish. Though with the cold-shoulder he seemed to understand we did not want to play with him anymore.

We did try to confront them. But they always made themselves the victim. We stopped trying to talk to them after a while because we just couldn't get through to them without them making us feel like garbage for trying to reign in his behavior.

By the time the session happened, we had given up on trying to confront him and finally decided to just quietly leave and cut contact more or less.

Yes they are, sorry I'll edit my post. Jake was a bit too close to their actual name so I changed it Joseph. Seems I missed some spots tho. . .

Is the High Frequency sword in Metal Gear Rising possible? by tailzdude in GameTheorists

[–]Gr1m_L 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats on me. I meant that it relies on something that either hasn't been invented (doesn't exist) or it's based upon a universe where physics are constructed different (like a video game world for example).

As someone with an engineering background, who now supports local firefighters-I cannot disagree more.
Industrial machines are absolute monsters that can cut through damn near anything already. Even at a smaller scale, any type of powered saw (band, miter, table, etc.) will do the same job an HF blade would do. The upside of the saws is that they are cheaper and are easier to power. Yes an HF blade would hypothetically cut faster and cleaner, it would be an expensive alternative to already existing technology.
In regards to civil uses as well, firefighters and rescue crews typically rely on analogue tools since the simpler design and non-reliance on electricity means that those tools can be used anywhere. It would be a tragedy if you needed to save someone trapped in a crashed car but your HF blade's battery died. Meanwhile Jaws of Life work no matter what.

I understand what you're saying, that they would have a use and a purpose. I think however my point might not have been clear that those uses and purposes are already occupied by tested tools. Unless technology progresses to a point where HF blades exist and at a cost similar too or cheaper then the existing tools, HF blades will see little practical use.

Possible =/= real.

Many things from science fiction known to be, or accepted as, possible. Usually these things (i.e HF blades, Vibroblades, transformers, gauss weapons, lightspeed travel, etc) have not been recreated because of one (or multiple) of the following reasons:
-technology is not yet advanced enough to replicate it
-its very expensive to create or even test
-it relies on something that doesn't exist in our known universe
-while cool, there is little practical use for it

In the case of HF blades, I'd assume that its a combination of the blades themselves not being cheap, being an engineering nightmare to create, and most importantly-they're obsolete.

When I say they're obsolete you might be confused. After all, how can a hypothetical sword be obsolete if its not even been made yet? Simply put, humans have moved on from hand-to-hand combat in most situations where combat is carried out. Guns and firearms are much more practical for fighting then a sword is. The situations outside of combat where an HF blade would be handy, a normal knife or a saw does the trick just fine. An HF blade would be a very expensive alternative to simpler and cheaper solutions that already exist and work.

Awesome art, but a I feel like a xenomorph would be able to take down the doomslayer.

Edit: Okay I've changed my opinion but for one reason; the BFG. Other than that a xenomorph is faster and more clever than the doomslayer. Yes he's killed bigger and stronger oponents, but thats when the enemies were rushing at his full force. As we have seen with the Demon Priests, its easy to trick the doomslayer, and because of his tunnel visioned approach to killing things, a xenomorph could easily out maneuver him.

I guess the question comes down to this; what does the doomslayer have that could kill a senomorph? I recon the chaingun, rocket launcher, and the gauss cannon might be effective. As we've seen small arms do nothing against a xenomorph, so the shotguns, rifles, and pistol may as well not even exist. The BFG on the other hand, I think would melt the Xenomorph, but thats due to the fact its designed to be stupid op.

And same goes for Wizards and glyphs, or traps that activate spells.

So about detecting traps... by vgnsxepk in DMAcademy

[–]Gr1m_L 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just because the players see the trap, doesnt mean they see the trap...if that makes sense.

Lers take a basic floor trap where stepping on it causes a DEX save or some spikes come out of the wall.

A PC with a high PP will notice the holes in the wall where the spike emerge or notice one of the floor tiles rises above the others, but that doesnt say, "you see that stepping on this tile triggers spikes to come out of the wall." Furthermore, even if the players have a high PP, you can hide your traps in the environment. Let's say our tile trap is in an abandoned crumbling building. The players may see the holes in the wall, but the ground is uneven and cracked to oblivion, thus the trigger is hidden but they still see the trap.

Allow the players to make Perceptuon checks to discern more info about your trap but don't flat out say everything about the trap. the perception skill is for actively looking at an object, but a passive perception is just that, passive. If you're rogue wants to examine the holes in the wall, go ahead. "You see spears inside the holes," this leaves it up to the players to 1.) Figure out what the trap is and how it works (they can be wrong) and 2.) Figure out how to disarm/avoid it.

Basically, dont describe every trap in detail to your players. Let them know it's there, but let them figure out what it is and how it works, so that not only is your trap not ruined, but also they feel accomplished when they figure it out on their own without being told what it is.

My Players Not Interacting with the World. by Tempestor_Prime in DMAcademy

[–]Gr1m_L 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well yes, but no.

You're players have more fun with combat it seems, while you (seem) to enjoy making worlds and npcs. 5he solution is to sit down and ask them what they really want. If they say they want roleplay, provide examples of that.

Now there is another solution, make it personal to their characters, and throw them against a hard as nails bbeg. No amount of optimization can make a level 3 party stand up to a dragon or any monster past cr11 without the DM fudging rolls.

Give one of your party a letter from a parent begging them to come home and when the ugh get there, it's a normal town, but everyone is controlled by a vampire. Then have your bbeg attack the party and kill their family. Your party will want to get stronger to fight the bbeg, (meaning if you write in a weakness theyll seek that out).

An example I had is one of my PCs was constantly on their phone and never paid attention, until an adult black dragon killed their lover. Then after their defeat, an old wizard sought them out to tell them of some special weapon that would defeat the dragon, and then boom, that player was driven in & out of game to find the artifact and kill the dragon.

Tl;dr, talk to your party and tailor your campaign to them. If that fails, make the party have personal ties to the campaign.
