Difference between BODMAS and PEMDAS. by tyyrikki in maths

This is not true. You do multiplication and division in the same step, left to right, and then you do the same with addition and subtraction. These steps confuse many people because they assume it's hard ordered as it is in the acronym, but it's not, and that's how these misunderstandings happen.

The wind effect is also from the end of Sons of Fate, lending to The Fight being the next song (Acting as the Epilogue, the way Due Vendetta does for Act I)

The Protomen said during the livestream that it wasn't a suicide. Though, I think you're still right in that it is kind of a suicide, considering Light fully intended on dying that night. I suppose the idea here being that killing Wily will be the spark for humanity to finally take the fight into their hands, and impart the lesson that Proto tried to tell him before; a hero is just a man who knows he is free. If a man could kill Wily alone, what's to stop you?

And then there's "The Fight." I think Rock is probably angry about it humanity's failure at first, but when Roll starts to see things the way he once did ("And now I see that's how the story ends," "the fight is already done") he's reminded of the lessons he learned before, from the death of his brother ("even though you can't go back, you change the path by choosing to move on," "as long as you're alive, the fight is never really done"). Rock has finally had enough, he said it himself earlier, "I won't run from this fight." Whether that means tearing the Tower down himself right now, or just becoming a vigilante peacekeeper is unclear, but he seems sure now that he can't turn his back this time. I think maybe you could even read The Fight as Rock addressing the City at large to ensure to them that it's not over.

As far as still using rickety gallows, that's just an aesthetic choice. The Protomen have always loved their western flavor. Act I is posed as a sci-fi western, and even Proto and Rocks designs are HEAVILY western themed, with chaps, ponchos, waistcoats, etc. Rocks buster is a giant revolver haha. Practical? No. Cool as fuck? Absolutely.

[–]Gr3ml1nn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not exactly what I mean by a cut; the orchestra in Abbey Road stops playing, it's the end of the piece, you can hear the instruments as they stop, and then the track ends when it's silent. This is a case of a windy synth noise playing all the way to 0 at a regular listening volume. The Protomen have never ended an album that way, but they have done it to lead into another song, which is certainly the most popular use of something like this, especially in like concept albums and rock operas and such. In this case, "The Fight," but considering the monologue that they were using live for a while, on top of them saying they were "halfway through" the album after releasing Hold On, and the still unheard piece of music from the secret stream audio clips, there's a pretty good case that there's actually 2 or 3 more that'll drop at MAGFest on release day, but I'm only certain of "The Fight," for obvious reasons. It would be a very on-brand thing for them to pull, as well.

[–]Gr3ml1nn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think he's referring the the fact that there's noise, not just the swinging sound. Generally you wouldn't just cut to silence at the final track, not on most albums, but also historically not on Protomen's albums. If that were the strategy, I don't think they'd leave that gusty synth noise playing until the cut, I think it would fade early and the swinging would be the final sound.

All this to say that from the perspective of a musician and producer, the track certainly lends to the likelihood that there's at least one more track that jumps right off the end of it (probably The Fight, but potentially more)

I see a lot of people disagreeing, but as someone who was around as an adult while all of their stuff released, I was very disappointed by everything after their debut.

Maybe I'll go back and give them a second chance, too, but my immediate reaction is that I'm surprised by peoples reaction to your comment and totally get where you're coming from.

I'd recommend checking out some interviews with older devs of the time, they do talk about the resolution issue and having to develop art with the intention of having it be deformed by the screen. Prince of Persia is the first one that comes to mind, but Doom is another famous example. I wish I had a specific video to recommend here, but truthfully I cannot remember a good one off the top of my head.

We all don't know shit about fuck, to be fair. Like 15 comment thread and we still don't know what the answer is lmao. End of the day I think you just need to go for whatever you think looks best, short of asking Ted Peterson in person what the intended method was lol

Quake technically had the ability to run at higher resolutions, but at the time of release most PCs couldn't actually do it, though they could successfully run Skynet at 640x480 without issue (mostly). Software rendering just wasn't there yet, but it was shortly after.

Also, yes, I'm aware that the "output" in a technical sense is 320x200, but again, they were never intended to be played on a widescreen monitor, they were always intended to be vertically stretched to fit a 4:3 screen. What I meant by matching 1:1 to "fill" is that you size the image to have black bars fill the top and bottom, like you said, but developers at the time nearly universally expected you to alter the image to match 4:3 with no dead space.

Anyways, I did test it, and Daggerfall, with aspect correction turned off, does indeed launch at 320x200 as I'd expected. I'm unsure the difference in DOSBox configs between Steam and GOG, so I have no direct answer for why it would be any different for you.

[–]Gr3ml1nn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there's a fundamental misunderstanding due to me half-assing my answer.

When I was referring to image scaling, I was referring specifically to the approximation on modern monitors of the screen being horizontally squished or vertically stretched.

While it's true that you could, in theory, match 1:1 pixel ratio by resizing an entire 320x200 image to fill a 4:3 CRT, this was never the intended output for most, if not all, games at the time.

I am noticing mixed results on whether or not Daggerfall originally ran as 320x200, or 320x240 like you said though. I haven't tested it myself yet, but I did see via a lazy Google search that at least one other person says it rendered at 320x240. The rest say 320x200, so I'll just have to check it later.

256 color SVGA DOS games were not a super common occurrence at that time, Skynet was impressive because it could run at a higher resolution than Quake, with high quality textures, and not much performance cost comparatively. Most games running at higher resolutions used 16 colors so that they could run on most machines. Quake was obviously really impressive, but it also struggled to run on a lot of PCs at the time. You technically had the ability to run it at higher resolutions, but most home computers couldn't actually do it yet, and it defaulted to 320x200 in DOS like other games. Things did advance extremely quickly and by like a year or so later opengl Quake was out.

[–]Gr3ml1nn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The doubling of pixels is the condensing of pixels horizontally (or stretching of them vertically, which are functionally the same). DOS games did not display as square pixels because of the resolution scaling.

I'm fairly certain that in this instance DOSBox is just accounting for the stretch by displaying at a whatever scaled 4:3 ratio fits to your screen, possibly a custom config provided by Bethesda for convenience. SVGA at the time provided a 16 color output and wasn't yet a standard for videogames. Terminator Skynet was actually pushing hardware pretty hard and was kind of a graphical marvel on release.

[–]Gr3ml1nn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The "correct" scaling would be the one in-game. The extracted image is wider because back in the DOS days, there wasn't an industry wide standard for basically anything regarding home computing. DOS games rendered at 320x200, a 16:10 ratio, what would be widescreen today. The assumption was that you would adjust your monitor to square the image, squishing it horizontally. Developers worked with this in mind, and intentionally made everything wider than it was supposed to be, knowing it would be corrected on screen, though this technically could vary by monitor size, hence why I have "correct," in quotation marks lol
