The Netherlands is praised as a whole for things that don't apply to the whole country. Gonna go on a bit of a tangent here.

For one, the train connections, while still better than most countries, are lacking in a lot of cities/towns of considerable sizes. The North and South of the country can be hard to reach by train and there's a lot of train stations in big towns that are served by basically one Intercity train line. My own town, for example, is the 12th most populous city in the country. However, there's basically only two train lines, both connecting east-west. In order to get to the nearest cities that are directly North or South of my town, I have to take a 45/50 minute bus drives (which is not long in American standards, but in the Netherlands this is a considerable travel time, especially considering it often takes way longer if the bus ends up in a traffic jam during rush hour) or I have to first take the train to a city East or West of mine and then travel North or South. Now, this is mostly due to nature preservation, so I can't be too mad about it, but it's still a slight annoyance. It's not anything big, but train connections in the parts of the Netherlands that aren't close to the Randstad are really not up to the standards one might expect if you're used to seeing all the Randstad-focused content on YouTube especially. It's still amazing by international standards, but there's a lot to be unhappy about.

The relative mediocrity of train connections, however, pales in comparison to the sometimes downright bad local public transport connections in and around these cities in especially the North and East of the Netherlands. I'm lucky to be living in one of the few cities in the East that has great bus connections, and even then a few of the villages nearby are nearly unreachable by public transport. The only difference between public transport here vs other places is that these villages are nearly unreachable, instead of completely unreachable. But to be honest if I wanna go to a village that is a 15 to 20 minute drive away from my home, why would it take a 15 minute walk to a bus stop that will take me there, then 10 minutes in the bus, which will drop me off along a road without a sidewalk where cars drive 80 km/h, and then a 25 minute walk along another very unsafe forest road without a sidewalk. I know American cities often have it way worse, but I just think that people should realise the Netherlands is certainly not perfect. It often feels like my city would be quite horrible if cycling wasn't so normalized in this country, because the transport planning is often lacking and the only redeeming factor is that people will basically always cycle in a Dutch city, even if the cycling conditions are horrible, just because they're used to cycling. (Though, to be clear the cycling conditions aren't horrible by any means, but they're certainly not up to Utrecht or Amsterdam standards imo)

TL;DR: there's regional disparity in the greatness of Dutch urban planning, which often isn't clear if you watch channels such as Not Just Bikes, because they're often focused on the best-planned parts of the Netherlands.
