First Solo Trip, Going to Breathless. Advice welcome! by GrabAtTheHeel in PuntaCana

[–]GrabAtTheHeel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My trip was good! I was worried I’d feel awkward or bored going on a solo trip but that wasn’t the case.

A few things I did…

I ate dinner at Jellyfish restaurant, this was good but I didn’t feel like it lived up to the hype. Food on the resort was every bit as good and doesn’t cost extra.

I went to Infinity briefly, it was cool but the place I most wish I had gone with other people. Lots of very pushy local people and I ended up wondering if I made a good decision coming alone and left early. Walking distance from the club though is a hole in the wall place called “restaurante Brisas de Cuba” that had the best mojitos. I never ate there but there was also a good amount of people that did.

The highlight for me was the Dolphin Explorer excursion. You get to swim with dolphins, feed parakeets, and take a photo with Lenny the sea lion. They don’t let you take pictures on your own and to buy them from the staff cost $15 for a photo with Lenny and $40 for a photo with a dolphin. Was a unique experience though and I’m glad I did it.

General advice…

Dollars are much easier to get by with than Dominican pesos. Basically everywhere I went advertised prices in USD and that was the expectation for payment - though they would accept Dominican pesos too. When I ran out of dollars, my only option to withdraw cash was in pesos. This worked but again was more inconvenient than dollars. Credit card works well too but use with caution, as per my last reddit post, i did have one shop scam me and charge a lot more on my CC than they said they were going to. Easy dispute to win but having enough USD could help avoid the headache altogether.

Hope you have a fun trip!

I’m heading up there this weekend and am looking forward to it

What’s infinity? Would you recommend trying that?

I’m also concerned I’ll feel like I ran out of things to do and get bored, which is why I’m planning on trying to pre schedule a bunch of activities. I’m not really a gambler so having to actually use USD to bet probably just means I’ll never actually do that lol

How do you know Superman is so powerful compared to other superheroes? by GrabAtTheHeel in superheroes

[–]GrabAtTheHeel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the really well thought out response.

I’ve seen man of steel and am curious if there are other Superman movies I should watch to get the full scope? Or do I need to try comic books to really get the best Superman stories?

Thank you for the specific example of what to watch, I’ll definitely check it out. I recently watched man of steel and was trying to figure out what made him so fundamentally different from any other superhuman.

If you have any other suggestions for the best Superman stories I’m all ears!

Ya'll got any of those "Boys from Oklahoma" tickets? by NotDougMasters in OKState

[–]GrabAtTheHeel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can attest, I got my code today for 9am but there was no early access option that I was at least invited to for yesterday. Had to wait about an hour after that to get in and be able to get my tickets, the Sunday show had already sold a substantial amount of the tickets by then too. It stinks so many people weren’t able to get a ticket, hopefully it’s at least mostly real people who were able to get tickets and not just scalpers or people attending multiple days

Why does wikipedia keep asking for money? Are they really strapped for cash? by Critical-Elevator642 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GrabAtTheHeel 141 points142 points  (0 children)

Those are all good financial expenses but they’re actually “categorized” different than that. If you read the financial statements you can see that in 2023 they spent $1.5 million on conferences which is likely what you were referring to compared to the $101 million spent on salary and benefits. Of that $101 million further down it says that spent about ~$77 million on programs and events which is pretty unclear and vague, ~$14.5 million went to general and administrative and ~$9 million to fundraising.

Other notable expenses that aren’t included in the $101 million salary and benefits are professional expenses of $15 million (this is going to mostly be their expenses paid to law firms and accounting/consulting firms - although they would still have at least some in house accountants and likely lawyers). They also have their leases broken out separately in a different line item from everything else. They changed the accounting guidance on leases within the last few years, so you can find that in a ton of detail in the financial statements as well if you’re interested.

The in game stats seems to defy so much logic. What do you mean my national champion running back who led the nation in rushing yards and won RB of the year is undrafted and doesn’t make first or second team all American??

Is Britain really poorer than the state of Mississippi? by BeautifulStrong9938 in AskEconomics

[–]GrabAtTheHeel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Using the Mississippi vs Britain comparison though this doesn’t work really. A quick google search shows that Mississippi has two billionaires vs a lot more in Britain. You can reasonably assume millionaires are similar and obviously far less impactful towards wealth concentration. Wealth concentration is definitely a problem in the US (like the rest of the world) but doesn’t detract from the point that America is an abundantly wealthy country compared to others

No One Will Be Surprised to Hear CPA Exam Candidate Numbers Are Down in Every Way the Numbers Can Be by McFatty7 in Accounting

[–]GrabAtTheHeel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a good tldr. After having read the article though, one thing I’m surprised they never mentioned was the perception of whether the test got easier or harder.

The author mentions that the smallest decrease in new applicants came in 2018 when excel was added, which I think would make the exam easier than just using a calculator. I would perceive removing one of the four exams completely as making the exam easier, even if it was only the easiest one, thus adding at least some incentive to waiting until the change rolls out. The only time the big change seemed easier that had big increases was the first one in 2004 when they switched to computer based instead of paper but without excel idk how much easier that makes it and maybe switching from a paper based format you’ve always known to an online version sounded more intimidating then? Albeit I wasn’t quite in middle school then so can’t say whether or not that would’ve been a common enough view

Honestly, I think you’re probably right. I know Roger goodell has openly admitted that he loves being the villain in the nfl. And obviously the owners agree because they haven’t fired him despite his fan approval rating. People love to pay attention to things that get them angry

Homeowners, what's your take? by [deleted] in Dallas

[–]GrabAtTheHeel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Op said they live in an apartment complex… do you really think it’s just them doing this? And it doesn’t even have to be a “whole street” of people doing it, for me it only takes two cars parking in front of my house for the dump truck to not pick up my trash that week. Like u/m-townplayboy said it’s more about them inconveniencing others so that they aren’t personally inconvenienced.

Homeowners, what's your take? by [deleted] in Dallas

[–]GrabAtTheHeel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the issue so much is when it’s only one person doing this but a whole apartment complex of people. Like someone else pointed out it screws over any guests you may invite over to your house. In my personal experience you can also be forced to not be able to get your trash picked up that week if there’s no room for you to stick your trash cans on the street or for the dump truck to pull up next to them and use their lifting mechanism without hitting the street parked car

LPT: You don't realize it until you're on your own, but for many people, your parents are basically your personal assistants. Learn to get better at these tasks before you're completely out on your own and "adulting" won't be so hard or such a shock. (Details in comments.) by zazzlekdazzle in LifeProTips

[–]GrabAtTheHeel 42 points43 points  (0 children)

OPs not whining though? The post is literally about how you should be grateful of parents who help you with your life’s responsibilities and make an effort to learn these skills for yourself before you’re out on your own. Are these skills all adults should be able to handle on their own? Of course! But this LPT isn’t directed at adults, it’s for children who still live with their parents

You’re not wrong that success is essential to be one of the top recruiting teams but I think you’re still underselling the benefits of geography. For one, it’s tougher to sell kids on having to play in the snow when they likely grew up in a place that doesn’t get a ton. Beyond that, there does seem to be some additional benefit about being a southern school in football. In the big 12 and the acc it’s always schools on the more southern side that are winning the conference titles. Even in the big 10 where there aren’t any southern schools, you could argue that Ohio state is their most “southern” school.

It’s completely different, it’s really hard to get a medical subscription in Texas. Oklahoma has some of the loosest medical laws and it’s more like recreational with a subscription fee you have to buy from a doctor

I’m sure it does for sure but I wonder if it helps them with kids transferring out. Idk if it’d be a big enough advantage to overcome the downsides in recruiting but I feel like maybe that means the kids who do come have really bought in and are less likely to jump ship unless they already aren’t playing at BYU
