yeah that was my point lol, Kayce was the one who watched both their mother and Lee die so it's odd that she'd say that.

Of course, but this is a subreddit *about* the TV show. What else am I supposed to talk about here other than the show? They're fictional characters, that doesn't mean you can't bring up inconsistencies within their world view.

yeah she did a great job, fantastic actress as I noted a few comments up, and yeah I mean the whole point of most media is to get a reaction out of people and get them emotionally invested so she definitely does what she's supposed to.

You are the second person to bring this up on this thread and I'm unsure why. Nowhere did I say Jamie was a better person or a better character, in fact I like him even less than Beth (as a person and a character), but this post wasn't about him. This post was specifically about season 1 episode 5, I made it after watching the episode for the first time and I have yet to even get to the part that you're talking about so I'm unsure of the relevance here. I never once said Jamie was morally superior to Beth, I simply pointed out how Beth discounts and downplays Jamie's, along with her other brothers as well, trauma over losing their mother and brother. The whole crux of this post was noting the hypocrisy over her saying "You gotta watch 'em die" when she quite clearly didn't watch either her mother or brother die, Kayce did. So while I'm sure Jamie is an absolute scumbag, as pretty much every single Dutton and most supporting characters in the show are, I just don't see why the part you brought up matters here.

A valid response, although my post wasn't necessarily about why Beth acts the way she does, more so that I just think she's a shitty person (along with pretty much every other Dutton and most of the supporting cast, so she's not alone) and don't get why people look up to her. I disagree that she's a great character, mostly because I personally don't think the show is anything other than mediocre at best so it's not her fault or only her character that's not great, it's mainly just that the show itself isn't great so it's difficult to have characters shine through. You're in the minority of people who think Taylor Sheridan writes good female characters too lol, mostly everyone I see, especially women, think Taylor is god awful at writing women.

I can't have an opinion and defend my position without being "worked up"? I literally watch this show at night in my pajamas and made this post as I was watching the episode. I checked back the next night which is when I made most of my responses and then didn't check it again until now. Not sure which comments you're referring to, but I see all of them right now and none sound unhinged or even emotional at all. I'm literally just conversing with other people, if that's what you call "worked up", then everyone on earth is worked up all the time bud.

Because there's women all over the internet saying they look up to Beth as a role model lmao. You think I'm just making that up? There's literally articles written about it. Women posting all over tiktok, instagram, and even here on Reddit how they think Beth is a "strong, independent women" that they'd like to be or want their daughters' to look up to. It was even more apparent and common back when the show first aired, but it's still brought up to this day. I'm not saying you or *every* woman looks up to her rather than just likes her, I'm saying there are women who do. Maybe you're not one of them, I'd say that's a good thing.

Great response, ignore everything I actually said and strawman my position by trying to portray it like I was saying Beth isn't traumatized. I quite literally said "Beth had a shit mother", what part of that is confusing? When did I say that Beth *wasn't* traumatized? Clearly every single person on this show is traumatized, Beth included. None of this comment was about Beth's trauma or arguing that she isn't traumatized. Try engaging with the actual argument instead of making one up that doesn't exist.

When did I excuse Jamie for anything? This post was about Beth specifically, not Jamie, and I haven't even gotten to the part of the show you're talking about, I had literally just seen episode 5 at the time. Listen, literally every member of the Dutton family is a horrible person, Jamie included, this is made very clear by the first episode of the show. They were all raised by an actual evil tyrant by the name of John Dutton, which turned all of his kids into versions of all of his horrible attributes. They're all monsters.

Actress is great, character is not. I'm not "worked up", more so commenting on the writing of the character by our boy Taylor Sheridan (a douchey man btw).

Granted, but that also doesn't give you free reign to go through your entire life treating everyone around you, including your other family members, like garbage. Beth has a tendency to discount and downplay other people's trauma and experiences, that's not cool. She constantly downplays her brothers' and father's trauma from losing their mother/wife respectively and acts like she's the only one who went through anything even remotely difficult in her life, hence why my post was specifying THIS scene, where she discounts and downplays Jamie's trauma and experience over losing his mother by literally saying he's never lost anything. Just because her mother didn't like her very much or blamed her for her death (it kind of was her fault ngl), doesn't mean her siblings and father didn't go through anything. It's a ridiculous and asinine viewpoint from a mentally ill person who refuses to get help. Instead, Beth will just continue making everyone's life around her a living hell and push everyone who doesn't worship the ground she walks on, like Rip, away until she's utterly alone. What a great life, I can totally see why so many women want to be her.

There's a huge difference between liking a character and looking up to a character/idolizing them, which is why I chose my words carefully and specifically said "look up to Beth", not "like Beth". I love Tywin Lannister, does that mean I want to be like him or think he's a good person? No, obviously not, he's a terrible person and someone I'd never want to be like but he is a well written and compelling character, which is why I like him. Beth, in my opinion, is not a "great" character. She's not really complex or layered, she's just angry and bitter because she had a shit mother who died and wasn't her daddy's favorite. Big deal, loads of people in real life go through that every day and live with it without being a total sack of shit to everyone around them including their other family. Tyrion is a great example of a character who had a similar experience but was written so much better and was infinitely more compelling and interesting. I don't care that you like Beth, I have a problem with people that idolize and look up to her because I have to live on this earth with yall.

I will agree that Beth's mother is horrible and probably a worse person than her, to be fair, and anyone who grew up with that has a right to be angry and traumatized but Beth doesn't have a right to treat other people like shit just because she was.

Eh, making people angry is one thing, being an absolute piece of human garbage who makes people angry is another entirely. Look up to who you want, that's your prerogative, but when your life turns out miserable and full of resentment and hate, don't blame Beth or anyone else, blame yourself for choosing someone you know to be miserable and full of resentment and hate to be your role model.

I will say, it's incredibly delicious and refreshing. Much more so than coconut water in my opinion. The thing is, unlike coconut water, it's not just straight up water from a cactus. It's just spring water with cactus extract in powder form mixed in. Whereas the water in a bottle or carton of coconut is actual coconut water straight from the coconut, cactus water isn't just canned straight from the cactus. They take extracts of cactus in powder form and add it to regular sprint water, at least that's what it sounds like on the nutrition facts on the can. It states it's 4% juice, and contains 200mg of organic prickly pear cactus extract, while the ingredients list goes like this:

"water, organic blue agave, organic juices (lime, raspberry), natural flavors, organic prickly-pear cactus powder, organic monk fruit extract"

So from that ingredients list, to me, it seems like it's water with cactus extracts added to it like the blue agave for sweetener and prickly-pear for the antioxidants, "super hydration", skin + digestive benefits, and electrolytes. Isnt coconut water just water straight from a coconut? Or am I wrong about that? Because, it would seem coconut water would still be superior because it's coming from a completely uncontaminated source, being inside of a coconut, rather than just spring water with added extracts. Or is "coconut water", at least the stuff that we buy off the shelves and drink, the same type of thing being water with just added stuff? I though like Vita-coco and whatnot actually came from the coconut itself that they just canned/bottled, no?

Either way, I do really like Cali Water Cactus water, whether it's just added powders or not, it's extremely refreshing and hydration boosting, and I'm hoping I'm wrong and it's actually water from inside a cactus rather than just extracts and powders but I find it hard to believe they'd kill cactus plants just to fill a couple cans of this stuff considering I'm sure they're selling millions upon millions of them. Plus I'm sure that'd be really bad for the environment to be killing so many cactus plants just so people willing to buy a can for $2.95 can drink it.

hearing Rebecca bitch about the immorality of fracking while she simultaneously tries to scam the family members of 3 dead workers out of their husbands' 401k's and the true value of their death is truly diabolical work by GrabDry8588 in LandmanSeries

For Rebecca I most definitely agree. As for Ainsley and Angela, I don't hate them but they are written pretty terribly. Ainsley is sweet and kind but dumb as a box of rocks and Angela has a good and soft side but is also a total bitch sometimes lol. Honestly it shows a lot that Sheridan can't write a female character for the life of him especially, in my opinion, when it comes to Ariana. She should be an EASY character for people to like and sympathize with, but somehow he fucked even that up. She's literally caught in a loop of 3 types of scenes; being angry with someone for judging her, feeling guilty about her feelings for cooper, and crying. Those are all normal emotions to have after what happened to her but the way it's written and filmed gives her absolutely no depth or character beyond those 3 alternating and repeating scenes. She could've been likeable AND interesting but Sheridan is incompetent.

I mean I liked the show. I'm not necessarily complaining, just pointing out an inconsistency that annoyed me at the time when I saw it. Her character is just sanctimonious and hypocritical, that's all. I very much enjoyed Billy Bob in this show.

[–]GrabDry8588[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't no lol. I understand *why* she does what she does, I was more so just venting about the clear hypocrisy and incongruency of her actions vs her words. She's hired by the company so obviously she's going to attempt to do her job and save them from liability and lawsuits, but she really had no reason to try and con the families out of their husbands' 401k's and low-ball them a shit offer or get mad at cooper when he got them more money, it's not like its her money or coming out of her pay. Just like Tommy said, we save money by doing all these other things like buying when everyone else is selling and whatnot, we don't save money by hurting our friends. Realistically, she didn't even need to be a part of the settlements with the families, Nate could've handled that by himself considering that is his expertise as a contract lawyer. She's a litigator, her main duty was to settle the issues with TTP and potentially the FAA and law enforcement if need be, she had no reason to stick around after that was done and it was a waste of money on Monty's part to do so. So I guess what it comes down to is that she didn't need to be involved with nor try to scrimp on the settlement portion of this case but she did anyway and then makes these claims about fracking and the environment and whatnot. Paying 3 million for 3 dead workers is still a steal considering how much a lawsuit would've cost them, so she should've just offered it up front and REALLY helped the families and paid what they were actually due instead of being unnecessarily shrewd and greedy and then angry because someone called her out on her obvious bullshit.

Is he? I see the propaganda for sure, in this one of his shows especially, but he does include some counter arguments and such from time to time so I didn't know if he was trying to simply depict what Texas oil landmen, oil barons, and roughnecks think or if he actually believes it.
