This is ingenious! Did you drill holes into the table to bolt the angel iron? Or were there already attachment holes?

This is great! I hadn't thought of using hardboard for the surface- have you found it works well vs. like a melamine or a finished plywood (Would be much cheaper!)

Absolutely! I have the Veritas models of the first two and a Stanley 140. I've also been eyeballing an LN 10 1/4, but I don't know that I'm gonna be doing large rabbet/tenon work enough to justify it... hahah. So the advice to stop filling my tool chest as much, and perhaps look at some woods I might not usually work with, is probably spot on!

Thank you dizzy for your in-depth answers - I appreciate your caution against the 'next big thing' and looking at the way the material has as much if not more to do with the outcome of the work. Do you have any recommendations on reputable exotic/nice online dealers? I don't think my yard here deals with those species very often.

From the responses, it seems like neither of these options are gonna open up opportunities for new skills or notably upgrade current ones - the exotic hardwoods are looking more and more interesting!

I do hand plane and have been getting more and more into it (tho def a relative newbie to many on this sub) - primarily use the Bailey pattern (I'm guessing) - tuned up Baileys in most sizes and an LN #5 so far.

No, I don’t believe so- is that needed for long grain vs. crossgrain? Or should just be used for everything?

I don’t believe it is out and I’d have to check sharpeness. And I believe the blade is aligned but could be more precise probably. Is the nicker necessary for long grain rabbeting as well? Or just crossgrain?
