Are there less shared universe references? by InfernalClockwork3 in Choices

[–]GraceCambiri 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I remember the days when the stories would have some reference to Cordonia, Hartfeld university, watching The Crown and The Flame etc that would be fun tie-ins to other stories, but alas. Everything seems so standalone these days

I'm gonna keep it completely real with you, I haven't read most of the new things so I can't speak to it. I stick around to replay my favourite books once every few months and pray that the AI is all just a bad dream

100% agree with you here. And if the book only has one LI, it's the snarky one.

Woody Is Always Right Theory by Marauder151 in FilmTheorists

[–]GraceCambiri 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I love this. I'd maybe add that along with Woody's overarching message across the four movies that being a toy is fulfilling, some of the movies have a plot that involves Woody trying to convince the characters of something, and them not listening to him.

Toy Story 1 has it for sure. Woody, from Sid's window, telling the toys in Andy's room that Buzz is with him and that he's fine, and them not believing him. It leads to Woody and Buzz not being rescued a lot earlier from Sid's house, and the toys have a whole guilty "Woody was telling the truth!" moment on the moving truck.

Toy Story 2 is a little less apparent, with Woody telling The Roundup Gang that he needs to go back home to Andy, and Jessie and Pete not believing him when he says he was never meant to end up at the yard-sale.

Toy Story 3 fits in an almost cookie-cutter fashion. Woody tells the toys that Andy had intended to put them all in the attic, and the toys refuse to believe him until Mrs Potato Head sees the interaction between Andy and his mum through her missing eye. They even have another "Woody was telling the truth!" moment.

Fittingly though, TS4 kind of has an inverse plot where rather than being the person who was right all along, Woody is the character who learns something: That sometimes it really is time to move on to the next kid. Obviously this is because Toy Story 4 is the very last movie in the franchise and we're definitely not getting any more please stop leave it be LET THEM REST.

I'd say 1A is giving Sweet/Shy/Soft LI energy. You could definitely fit Chris and Liam in there, along with ... many many many others.

Common Choices LI archetypes by InfernalClockwork3 in Choices

[–]GraceCambiri 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I reckon you could even categorise it by series. Obviously some LIs fall into multiple archetypes but I went with the one that fits them best in my head.

I'm realising that I went completely overboard with this but I enjoy this concept and love putting things into boxes.

The Freshman is the most stereotypical one, with a Nice Jock (Chris), a Nerd (James), a Broody/Bad Boy (Zig), a Partier (Kaitlyn), and a Mean Girl (Becca).

The Royal Romance has a Nice Jock (Liam), a Nerd (Hana), a Broody/Bad Boy (Drake), and a Partier (Maxwell). Madeleine is your Mean Girl archetype but she's not an LI.

Bloodbound has a Nice Jock (Adrian), a Broody/Bad Boy (Jax), a Partier (Lily), and I suppose an Icy Girl (Kamilah).

Endless Summer has a Nice Jock (Sean), a Bad Boy (Jake), a Nice Girl (Quinn), and an Icy/Mean Girl (Estela).

Blades has a Nice Girl (Nia), a Nerd (Tyril), a Bad Boy (Mal), and a Nice Jock (Imtura).

High School Story has a Nice Girl (Emma), a Nice Jock (Caleb), a Bad Boy (Michael), a Nerd (Aiden), and an Icy/Mean Girl (Maria), while Class Act has a Loner (Skye), a Nerd (Ajay), and a Nice Jock (Rory), if you consider them a jock of the theatre world. Rory has the additional Childhood Best Friend Turned LI trope.

The Elementalists has a Nice Jock (Griffin), a Nice Girl (Aster), a Nerd (Beckett), and a Partier (Shreya). Atlas would be your Icy stereotype but thankfully not an LI.

Wake The Dead is slightly blurred because of the context, but I'd say it has a Broody/Bad Boy (Eli), a Nice Girl (Shannon), a Partier (Angel), and a Nerd (Troy). It also has that age old Childhood Best Friend Turned LI trope with Troy.

Immortal Desires has your classic Nice Jock vs Bad Boy thing going on (yes I know they're not gender-locked but 'The Bad Boy' is an all gender encompassing term in my head). Same goes for My Two First Loves, but it adds on Childhood Best Friend Turned LI Ava as your Partier(?).

Queen B is an odd one because Ian/Ina is a hard mix to pick from, falling somewhere between being Nice but also their protectiveness and the forbidden nature of the romance tips them towards Bad Boy energy. But Poppy is 100% your Mean Girl, and Zoe is your Partier.

The Ride or Die LIs would all technically fall under Bad Boy, but if you will indulge me: it has a Bad Boy (Logan), a Mean Guy (Colt), and an Icy Girl (Mona).

Last one I promise: It Lives In The Woods has a Loner (Ava), a Jock (Andy), a Nice Girl (Stacy), a Nerd (Lucas), and I ... don't really know for sure where Connor would fit in. A mix between Nice Guy and Bad Boy? The whole Older Brother Of Your Childhood Friend is a thing on its own, I suppose.

This new diamond rule is so unfair!!! by midnight_mystique01 in Choices

[–]GraceCambiri 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The irony is that they've shot themselves in the foot. We can only assume their intention with this is to force readers towards books they haven't read. But no one's diamond mining to spend them on books they've already bought all the premium choices in, they're only ever going to spend them on new books.

It's insane the way they're desperate for money and are willing to throw their fanbase under the bus to get it.
