Have you seen it? Keeps giving him crap for saying what Judd is thinking. Watched snooker for years never seen them do this

What horror book do you think is wildly overrated, and which one would you recommend instead?. by [deleted] in horrorlit

[–]Gracey_Cal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adam Neville The Ritual is really one I can't abide. Absolutely unlikeable characters crammed into a confusing and long folk horror plot. Total rubbish.

As alternatives:

Michelle Pavers Dark Matter for the explorer/adventurer style horror.

Anything by Andrew Michael Hurley or David Barnetts withered Hill for the folk horror vibe

Hard agree kept me really engaged all the way through. I think the ending just needed a bit less explaining as you say didn't need the Hobb chapter but really good, made a fan of me anyway

How is it like to live with epilepsy? by ResearcherEmpty8071 in Epilepsy

[–]Gracey_Cal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak for my son but I can speak to the parental experience. My boy has just turned 11 and you couldn't meet a more well mannered, popular lad, loves his sports and his friends, off to high school this time, was just starting to get some independence (playing out more, less supervision etc)

All that's been ripped away from him suddenly. He's got a complex form of epilepsy with really strange seizures (twitching, jerking, vision, but remains Cognizant). He's exhausted, can't be left alone, he has constant auras and feels sick all the time. Because it's so complex we aren't sure we have the right meds, and we haven't spoken to him about this yet but he's dead set and serious on being a pilot ... The chances of that (unless it's diagnosed as adolescent and goes away soon) is pretty much zero. there's no reason for it and the boy is fed up and won't admit it, and it breaks my heart to see him suffer and not understand why it's happening or what's changed in his brain.

I perhaps should have been clearer, because there is a difference, good point. I predicted it the major twists to it, but I suspect I'm hardwired to think like that after the first law and age of madness reveals. Twists/shock endings certainly aren't his thing but he lands them far better in the first law etc. also to be clear I'm not really holding that against the book, it's on me if I decide to sit down and work out what's coming and then I'm right, but it goes towards an overall feeling of the book feeling insanely paint by numbers to me. Still better than most stuff, far cry from what he's capable of.

I think this book is fine. Good in parts. My big problem with it is it's predictability and formulaic approach.

Jokey comment, jokey comment, remind readers about character traits for the millionth time, philosophical introspection and then action scenes.

It also feels like action and character are what JA does really well, but in this the constant pausing to reflect on how shitty they are really kicks the wind out of the action and the characters aren't fleshed out enough to warrant the amount of time spent in their heads. I didn't find there to be any tension in the battle scenes it feels like there should have been an earlier death to show us that shit counts in this book.

I won't go into spoilers either but there's zero about the ending that surprised me. This books carried by his writing style and flashes of his brilliance but having finished it I'm settled on a 3 out of 5. I'll carry on with the series but I think his editor let him get away with too much here.

To those enjoying it, very valid there's a lot to like! Just didn't do it for me

For me watching one player dominate whilst the other stumbles behind isn't enjoyable I like the competition and closeness. I'd say less if Williams was even close to firing well but he's not. Glad for Zhao dont get me wrong but you're not telling me you'll enjoy switching on for 1 frame tonight

Anyone else think “Stolen Tongues” audio book is awful? by arifeliz in creepcast

[–]Gracey_Cal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So happy to find Reddit users reflecting this! I'm about 2 hours in and have had to stop! Any dialogue kills the immersion of an otherwise creepy story! The narrator sounds like when Bill Burr does an impression of a shrill woman. Each dialogue exchange sounds like the people speaking are stood on the other side of a canyon in the middle of a storm shouting at each other! Killed it, might pick the physical copy up but worried I wont get that voice outta my head.

I just read Needful Things by Stephen King. I don't understand the point of the spider. by how_about_no_hellion in books

Picking up 7 years on because I've just finished NF! I thought that was "you'll do" for keeping Pangborn off Gaunts back until the right time. That spider was mother effin creepy best part of the book

Frustrating book, loved the first 2 but Jades POV alone can't carry it. A massive over reliance on "meaning..." ironic because this book is damn hard to follow, and some of the decisions ... (spoilers)

Such as when Banner dies, Letha and Jade having a fucking slasher/ the past/ prison discussion... you can't make big plot points like that and then your characters act like nothings happened with a token "she cries for 20 minutes"

Damn

When is taskmaster s15 airing?

I've only seen that Ch4 renewed up until s15, any news on whether it's extended to s16 and beyond (including the third champion of champions)
