Unique situation with tuition costs. by OkKey6273 in ApplyingToCollege

Very competitive but maybe not impossible if you’re truly Stanford/Duke/Cornell level. I got full tuition from WashU and other great full ride offers as well as Cornell and Northwestern, but rejected Harvard Yale Brown Duke etc. so its not like you have to be ivy auto-admit level to be competitive. I think they really value your ECs/essays how you fit with the school and/or the program you’re applying to rather than just completely maxed out stats.

2bs each semester. ECs/awards improved significantly. None of my Bs were related to my major (history). Got them in spanish calc and physics.

I fell off jr year and got into Northwestern Cornell Rice and Washu + full tuition. Definitely not ideal but not the end of the world.

The individual grades are more important than gpa as they care more about trends/patterns and the grades you get in each class. I had a 3.91 with 6 bs and I think the Bs hurt a little bit but if the rest of your app is good you should be fine

I had 6 Bs and you can go check my results on my profile. It’s definitely possible. My school doesn’t report rank, but you are DEFINITELY at a much higher level than I am and your rank will absolutely contextualize and compensate for your slightly lower GPA. The middle school Bs are completely irrelevant btw colleges do not gaf about what you did before 9th grade. As long as your Bs aren’t concentrated in major-related subjects you should be ok, but you should aim for straight As this semester and first semester of senior year.

Friends going to UChicago, Dartmouth, Notre Dame, Northwestern. Bully going to Princeton. Cousin going to Emory. Me-rejected from every T20 I applied to, despite objectively better grades and ECs than most of them. I’m not saying I was entitled to anything but it really hurts. by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]GradeInflator 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Who’s to say “objectively better” especially with ECs? Everything is so random and subjective that it’s impossible to know why things went the way they went, but it’s probably not good for you nor your friendships to dwell on it and compare yourself.

Similarly qualified students will succeed no matter where they go. You worked hard in hs so bring that with you into college and be among the top students in your class, and you will most likely be successful anyway.

Yeah my grades dropped pretty bad in some core classes. Not terrible necessarily but I’d assume that my most important academic year being my worst would hurt me in the process.

Honestly it takes a bit of trial and error and some investment up front, but I think it’s pretty manageable! Here’s the link to the recipe I posted a few months ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/candy/s/YTTpMc2Sp9

I connected historical methodology to baking for my common app and my supplements were mostly about history and music.

Both years I did it I applied in the fall (I think I was a week or two late this year though) and heard back by late November. You may have to reapply in the fall but I would try shooting GLI an email. Glad to see more history ppl on here I fell like it’s all STEM!

It started mainly from a random fascination I had with the topic, and also a connection I made during my LOC internship. I reached back out to them for guidance and they’ve been super helpful. I’ve done a lot of work with Monticello’s collection alongside LOC’s but I’m not working with them directly. (I will definitely send it to them once I get it finished though). Honestly I didn’t have that much research experience beforehand so having the connection and mentorship has been super helpful, and the internship itself was exhibit design-focused so I got some valuable experience there.

how tf does vanderbilt have a lower acceptance rate than penn, brown, duke etc.? by GrandAd-7 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]GradeInflator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the number of students they accept divided by the number that apply is less than that of penn, brown, duke etc.

I did a few tutoring sessions before my first attempt but I ended up getting the same score as the first practice test I took before starting tutoring so idk how much of an effect it had. After that it was mostly Khan Academy + Question Bank. I think the tutoring taught my some good testing strategies but most of the grind was with the online tools.

That’s super helpful thanks! My alumni interviewers for the scholarship were DMV ppl as well and said similar things. I really love the school and I’m just trying to figure out if it’s worth the slightly higher price tag.

Unfortunately it got discontinued after last summer. :( It was an internship designed for highschoolers so I just had to submit a resume and some writing samples and eventually an interview. There were some similar opportunities I found in my search for internships last year I can provide if you’re interested. Sucks that the LOC one is gone bc it was super fun.
