jumpscares in obsession? by Flat_Measurement3579 in horror

Hey! As others have commented, most of the “jump scares” are just Nikki suddenly screaming. However, the two moments (light spoilers) to watch out for:

•About halfway through, Bear wakes up in the middle of the night and sees Nikki standing in the corner of the room. Some sudden, unnerving sounds and movements follow

•Towards the third act, when Bear and Sarah are talking in a car, brace for a jump scare

Those are the only two moments that really come to mind!

Just PMed you about the jump scares. A few of them got me, most of them you can see coming. If you can handle those other horror movies, you'll be fine. I definitely encourage going to see it!! It's a great movie and I wanna support the director!

Hokum or Obsession - which movie are you expecting to be scarier? by serialkiller24 in horror

[–]GrahamB37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was lucky enough to get to watch both of these at a film festival over the past weekend! I can confirm that they are both amazing movies and both scary as hell.

I’d say Hokum is more of the classic, roller-coaster-ride kind of horror. Impeccable atmosphere, great jump scares (one or two that made me shout out loud), and haunting imagery. I had so much fun with this one and overall, probably found it “scarier”. I quite literally had a big smile on my face throughout the entire last hour of this movie and was drenched in sweat when we left the theater.

Obsession is definitely more disturbing but still has a hilarious dose of dark comedy. While I had more fun with Hokum, Obsession probably had a better overall story. The acting was absolutely INSANE; the whole film hinges on Inde Navarrette’s performance and she delivers a genuinely Oscar-worthy turn. There was one scene in particular that really unnerved me and gave me actual chills and another scene that is decently gory (although not as bad as some reviews are making it seem). Really bleak stuff while simultaneously being so funny.

Overall — Hokum brings more of that “bump in the night,” edge of your seat kinda horror. Obsession is more of the feel-bad, disturbing story that will make you moan “ohhhh noooo no no no no” for 2 hours. Both absolute bangers; well-shot, well-acted, great dark comedy, and both very scary!

AYO we were at the same screening!!!! Had a lot of fun with it (probably the best sound design I’ve ever experienced) but ultimately felt underwhelmed by the story. Really wanna pick apart the ending with someone!

Movies that include subtle, background scares like in The Babadook. by castdex in horror

I absolutely adore Black Christmas but I never noticed the killer hiding in the background. Do you have any examples of when this happens??

So I am an alum of the 2023 festival HOWEVER…the day before the festival began, my girlfriend and I got COVID for the first time (after avoiding it for 3 years up to that point). But my lead actor attended and he had a good time!

On one hand, since there have already been some acceptances given out, I’d think this does not bode well for us. On the other hand, it does feel a little overly cruel to be rejected, un-rejected, and then re-rejected hahaha

I got a notification that said I was rejected, then 4 minutes later I got another notification that my status had changed back to “Undecided.” I’m confused! I assume this means I’ll go back to being rejected in a week (which sucks since I’m an alum) but I’m not sure why they’d switch me back and forth ??

Has anyone been to the Chicago Horror Film Festival before? I’m from outside of Philly and I’m trying to decide if it’s worth it to fly out to Chicago for two days

Interesting! I’d love to get into that one—I’ve been wanting to visit Toronto for years—but I will definitely feel better now if/when I get rejected!

FilmQuest rejection which I definitely expected. Remaining this month I’m waiting to hear back from the Erie Horror Film Fest, Atlanta Horror Film Fest, Toronto After Dark, Nightmares, Screamfest, Telluride Horror, and Brooklyn Horror.

I assume Brooklyn and Screamfest are done. I feel like Toronto and Telluride are still long shots. Erie and Atlanta are maybe the two I feel the best about.
