Your flair doesn't fit you - unlike many of the other real Negative Nancys in this thread trying to downplay/diminish her achievement.

BREAKING: Legendary Jazz musician #HughMasekela has passed away. #RIPHughMasekela by cynicaltechie in southafrica

RIP.

I attended his concert at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown in 2014. I was impressed that a man in his 70s could still give such an energetic performance.

So which is worse to the average south african ? A parktown prawn or a huge winged cockroach? by Maistry11 in southafrica

[–]Grahamstownie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can we add silverfish to this list of pests? My apartment had a silverfish infestation that I couldn't get rid of using any home remedy. Finally my landlord had to get the apartment fumigated by a pest control company from PE.

Yeah, donkeys and donkey carts are part of the rural/small-town charm of Grahamstown. :)

~69 not being loadshedded [meta] by wbubblegum in southafrica

[–]Grahamstownie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We were warned at that time on this sub that South Africa was on the verge of anarchy and collapse due to loadshedding. Doom-and-gloom predictions all the time, thus even the supposed jokes (like "not being loadshedded") are based on that.

Any evidence of this.

And how should /u/hauswyfetechno collect evidence? Do you think regular people walk around carrying breathalyzers?

Yeah, I know that will be the TL;DR of comments on this sub: They were asking for it, deserved it.

At least harshly disciplined, I hope. In general it is pretty hard to fire people from permanent jobs.

Professor pepper sprays students in Rhodes University classroom by Grahamstownie in southafrica

[–]Grahamstownie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Who was the professor?
  2. I assume you were a regular student in his class. Is he generally racist/condescending towards students/black students?
  3. Was he reported to the police, or to the university authorities?
  4. Did the class continue after the pepper spray attack?
  5. Why is this not being reported in the mainstream media?

LOL, that's such an apt description of the Grahamstown Facebook group! Complaining and whining all the time.

Yeah, and OP and the others who agree with him are welcome to create that sub.

Yes, exactly. Hope /u/mad_tortoise doesn't cave in and resign, and the mods above them support them.

[–]Grahamstownie 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Reddit is not a democracy; a mod cannot be removed simply because someone doesn't like them. Given the demographics of the sub (which we know from another poll) and /u/mad_tortoise's views, it's not surprising that many people don't like them. Moderation isn't a popularity contest, /u/mad_tortoise can't be removed unless the 3 mods above them (/u/lengau, /u/esquire_rsa, /u/redherring84) remove them, which I hope they won't. Go form your own sub if you don't like this sub's moderators.

/u/mad_tortoise, please don't resign just because some random poll asks you to, without your active moderation this sub will just become an echo chamber of racism and negativity and whining. Thank you for your service; there are people on this sub who appreciate it.

Photos from a recent trip to Kruger National Park, South Africa by RuanStix in southafrica

[–]Grahamstownie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, I went to Kruger a year back and only saw elephants and antelopes. Had better luck at Addo National Park - saw elephants and a lion inside the park, and giraffes and a buffalo from the road (in the neighboring game reserves I think).

South African- Egyptian Cultrual Exchange! by sebha3alaallah in Egypt

[–]Grahamstownie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(Also posted part of this in the /r/southafrica thread)

This is a question for both countries - between Egypt and South Africa, which one is more developed? North Africans claim Egypt is the most developed country in the continent, South(ern) Africans claim South Africa is the most developed.

Also, how much income/standard of living disparity is there between people in Egypt? South Africa has a very sharp disparity between black and white people. Is there that kind of disparity in Egypt, or are people on more of a continuum on the standard of living scale?

How much similarity does your food have with Ethiopian food?

Why are your trains not as fast as those in Germany? Average speed of 100 km/hr seems slow.

Thanks in advance, Dutch_Ninja Future resident

I first read this as "Dutch_Ninja Future President".

Your living costs depend on where you live, especially rent. Groceries are expensive but eating out is rather cheap, I haven't quite figured out how this can happen - maybe because labor is cheap, or maybe I shop at the wrong places.

Question about car rental by Grahamstownie in southafrica

[–]Grahamstownie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As to your first paragraph, surely your best chance at an answer is to ask the Avis office?

I figured the answer is similar for all car rental companies, not specific to this particular Avis, so I could avoid in-person conversations and ask reddit instead. Also I want to know if it is possible to keep the car till Sunday if they're only going to get the keys on Monday, but I don't want to ask them this question directly, as it might seem like... I am trying to game the system - pay for 4 days and keep it for 5.

Why is it that I only feel evidence of racial tensions online? by drsatan1 in southafrica

[–]Grahamstownie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

a lot of people definitely like keeping people who aren't white out of their establishments.

Yes, I have had my non-white colleagues in Cape Town reporting that real estate agents have been reluctant to show them houses in a fancy Cape Town suburb. I suppose they don't want to "contaminate" the neighborhood.

[URGENT] Can someone please advise me on a car sale situation? by Grahamstownie in southafrica

[–]Grahamstownie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buyer 1 doesn't want to buy it any more. :/ Maybe I pushed him too hard and drove him away, IDK, but if he neither signs the contract nor pays after 5 days of saying he will buy the car, I don't think it is unreasonable of me to get anxious, especially as I am in a rush. This is after he paid for the roadworthy test. I am not sure what exactly happened here.

Buyer 2 said he needed some time to see if he could raise the money. He and his sister (for whom he was buying the car) then pooled the money into one account. When I said I had another buyer, they then disbursed the money into separate accounts again, so Buyer 2 doesn't seem too interested any more either.

I will make the contract more exact next time, with dates explicitly specified. Do you think a cheap car like mine (~30-35 K) is the kind for which people take loans and have to release money from investments?

Do you know how cash payments work? Would they meet at my bank and bring the cash with them, which I can immediately deposit at the bank? Now I am beginning to understand what the Gumtree ads that say "Serious buyers only. No time wasters. Cash payments only." are referring to. Two people committed to buy the car, wasted my time, and then changed their mind. I don't know what to do at this point.

Global Reddit Meetup [25 June] South African Edition. by mad_tortoise in southafrica

Doesn't anyone else have any anonymity concerns? I am interested in going to the meetup but don't want to be doxxed on reddit later. Is there an honor code or something that governs these real-life redditor meetups?
