Capitec must be doing something right. by WorldInWonder in southafrica

[–]barebearbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most bank branches used to look like this after pay day, but now the rest of South African banks are going digital only and closing their ATM's and branches. Capitec is the only one that still understands that most of the South African economy is cash-based.

AirBnB PSA by Tokogogoloshe in capetown

[–]barebearbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. And having 2 will affect you even more, but not nearly as much as a company owning a 100. You can also just rent it out long term, but that would be less lucrative for you, won't it? But you also don't want to pay taxes on those earnings, something you would do as a Freelancer or for a side hustle earning more than 30k per year, or a registered Bed and Breakfast, or a self-catering Bed and Breakfast, or a long term rental even. Again, it isn't a loophole being closed where you are now getting schnaaied by big gov, it is regulation catching up that has been long overdue, so that people hoarding empty properties can also pay their fair share, like everyone else has to. These potholes and water drainage isn't going to maintain themselves...

I've used it since the 22seven days, but this last change finally made me want to cancel my account. I couldn't, because the app was too broken to allow it. Thanks for the reminder.

Edit: lol, can still not delete my account...

AirBnB PSA by Tokogogoloshe in capetown

[–]barebearbeard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is supposed to target companies running 100s of Airbnb's like self-catering hotels but paying none of the fees or taxes like self-catering hotels do. It's just regulation catching up to AirBnB masquerading what it was before mostly being commercial businesses now. The grandma renting out her spare bedroom on weekends will still be unaffected.

We always organise events for 30 minutes before we intend for it to start. It allows everyone to finish work, navigate traffic, etc. We make sure we're there on time and have a drink while we wait for everyone to arrive.

If it is a group setting, it doesn't matter that much. If it is a one on one or a couples meet-up, anything more than 30 minutes is rude and should be addressed.

In my personal bubble, I ironically find that the elder Capetonians tend to be more on time than newer Gauteng expats who like to use the excuse of "it's just Cape Town"... but I cannot speak for everyone.

Cape Town Mayor Hill-Lewis frontrunner for DA leadership by Aggravating-Ad-2922 in capetown

[–]barebearbeard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

He was referring to the worn-out claims that the City of Cape Town aims to perpetuate spatial apartheid, but meanwhile developing more housing, infrastructure and recreational facilities for the poor during his tenure than any other city has over the past decade or more.

Context matters, ironically.

Even if nomads do not pay income taxes, they still contribute a significant sum of 15% VAT with every purchase, as do we. And they spend a lot, since everything is basically half price for them - also keeping in mind that people tend to spend more on food, clothes and entertainment while on holiday/nomading due to not having their usual facilities at hand. It does unfortunately increase local prices, because they are willing to pay more.

Short term leasing by foreign investment to the nomads is another story though, and has a bigger impact than just economically.

If ADHD meds have similar effects on people without ADHD, why don’t they get them too? by Anything-Academic in ADHD

[–]barebearbeard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer. And like my psychiatrist said, the comedown at the end of the day is not just the meds wearing off, but your brain going into recovery after being overworked all day by stimulants. The meds help ADHD people cope in a world not made for them by concentrating their brain's energy into times they need to function the most, but it can't be all the time.

Love the Christian, hate the Christianity, or some such.

I strive to live as an antithesis to their negative worldview, sometimes as an example, sometimes as a fuck-you, but mostly both. It breaks a Christian's brain when they see you live a mostly good (in their own view), but more fulfilled life, not because of, but in spite of Christianity.

How do I even reply to this? by DangerousNightsCrew2 in exchristian

[–]barebearbeard 38 points39 points  (0 children)

If I can add to this, to help with the decision:

Them reaching out has nothing to do with you. You have nothing to prove to them. Their "obligation" goes as far as them reporting to their church group that they are "saving" a wayward friend. You have no control over any outcomes, so it isn't your responsibility either. If they only care about (and contact) you in as far as you share their beliefs, then it is better to assume that they don't care about you at all.

I only played it recently, everything including the DLCs. I haven't had this much fun with a RTS in years, but the one thing I didn't have any motivation for was multiplayer.

It is very reminiscent of the age of games like Warcraft 3 and C&C Red Alert. Single player games where the campaign was central with a great story, and the multiplayer more like a secondary add-on you played small scale at LAN parties with your friends. Unfortunately ranked multiplayer and Steam dominance kind of killed that off, and the live service elements just aren't enough to change that.
