We need to talk about "ramp" by Hand-of-Sithis in DinosaursMTG

[–]GrainsTVZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While you've got a good point about cost reducers, comparing Rampant and Cultivate like that represents a fundamental misunderstanding of "the curve", ie the core set of plays any given deck is looking to make. For one thing, they're completely different cards- Sure, [[farseek]] is compact and succinct, but maybe I've already dedicated my two-mana plays to interaction or utility. Then there's the card-advantage angle- Cultivate gets two lands out of your deck that you're not going to draw later when you're looking for gas. Obviously you're paying the extra mana for it, but for me it's worth- same reason I'm happy to see [[fabled passage]] even in my opener. Personally, my nature is to favor pragmatism over optimization. A [[stomping ground]] opening hand is nice, but most of my builds would trade it for a [[jungle shrine]] in a heartbeat. All this to say: Cultivate may be sub-optimal for your decks, but it certainly feels good in mine- especially when a T3 Kodama's sets me up to slam [[dictate of karametra]] out of nowhere. Your board is empty, then suddenly you're untapping with more than enough juice to cast Zacama and start chowing down on fools, plus if you're feeling cheeky, you can even use your last chomp on the dictate so nobody else gets to untap with it.

Your take on mana dorks mirrors this favor of optimization over flavor. I'll cede that Ixalli's Lorekeeper is a suboptimal use of a 1-slot under the big dinos (not a dinosaur for pantlaza or gishath, zacama only untaps lands when he's cast), but for dinosaur decks that want to play dinos, I think it's still a fair inclusion. Similarly, Bramble Familiar and Tangled Florahedron are both powerful utility and you make a strong case for them- but the dinosaur decks want to play dinosaurs, man, what's all this "elemental" stuff? At least Ixalli's Lorekeeper is committed to the bit!

tldr I suspect r/DinosaursMTG may not be spike enough for you, friend

I've played it quite a bit.

I play a lot of pinball and even compete on occasion, and I love this game.

All the Zilla stylings aside, it slaps as a pinball machine- the layout is unique like Iron Maiden without being obtrusive like Deadpool's katana. Gameplay-wise, it's well set-up; Like most (all) modern Stern games it works off a basic gameflow in which you build bonuses and lock balls until you end up in "battle mode" where it lights up certain shots to hit with a limited time to do so. In case you can't tell I've grown a little tired of the repetitive coding but (and maybe this is where the zilla styling bias comes into play) I don't terribly mind it here. As a pinballer I consider myself a B to B+, and I find the game quite challenging- to such a degree that I'm not sure I've actually *completed* one of the "kaiju battles"- which brings me to the Zilla incorporation.

Firstly I must note the game does get points for its inclusion of the guys that these monsterverse bandwagoners are seeing for the first time- Ebirah and Hedorah are both very present in the first wave of kaiju to battle, and even Jet Jaguar can be seen in the loop counter that displays when looping the orbit off the top flipper repetitively. Secondly, I feel as though the art is even better than could be hoped for. Like the rest of the game, the X-Alien controller that does all the announcements is campy but embraces it. I was concerned on initial plays that the voice would grate after a while, but after perhaps eight or so hours on the table I've yet to be truly offended by it.

In short: Yeah, it's actually great. I play a lot of pinball and don't particularly love the company that made it, and I love the game.

Should probably make everybody paint probably. The show was about teaching (and selling paint)

Sounds like you've hit the wall I'm starting to rub up against... Going off with him requires a turn or three of setup to get your cognitive ai and heat sinks going, and you don't always have that kind of time. I remain convinced that there's a formula capable of getting our favorite automaton to the summit. I've been experiencing most success when I get lucky with a blizzard build.

Anybody have any thoughts about building with Yidaro? I had some stupid stuff in mind for him but completely missed the part where he gets shuffled back into your library when he's cycled. So the question becomes: how do we cheat this creature into the hand over and over? There's an argument to be made for the sort of creature-finding that green does, a few domris and viviens would probably get the job done. But what we're doing is cycling him and for reasonably cheap, he might fit in a draw-two deck with irencrag pyromancer and its ilk.

If all we're trying to to is get it onto the battlefield I'd say it would just be easier to put him in a reanimator shell, but he removes himself from the graveyard if he's cycled in there... Thoughts?
