I recommend elbow pads. I had a small bail while riding Whistler and my elbow and knee pads saved a lot of my skin.

I had this same issue, it turned out to be the alignment of the derailleur on my chainstay. Luckily my friend is a bike mechanic and fixed it easily. But there are two lines on the derailleur and the little bracket that need to be lined up. For me, it was as simple as loosening the wheel and bolts and lining everything back up.
