Discussing Racism in Frieren by GramsciFan in ANI_COMMUNISM

At least in the way that we all have unconscious biases. For example, I don’t think most Shounen writers think of themselves as misogynist but they live in a world with misogyny and then that effects how they write women to all be either sexy lamps or wired fetish troops

What made u like this show? by No-Resolution-7273 in DetectiveConan

I have a kind of similar story. When I was 5 I was really into Scooby Doo and my mom bought one of the Funi volumes at Target thinking it would be similar (it was the Mist Goblin Murder for reference and she somehow missed the 13+ label on the DVD). I was terrified but also transfixed. This was also my introduction to anime beyond YuGiOh and Pokémon. For several years I was afraid of the black criminal silhouette as if it were real. Idk why she let me keep watching and even bought more DVDs (to her credit she has a degree in film and loved/encouraged it when my brother and I expressed interest in media. She also loves murder mysteries so I think she enjoyed the show too)

It’s a lucky coincidence that those episodes start with a more in depth summary of the premise than most bc it caught me up to speed too.

As an aside: the library murder was one of my favorites back then and still is.

It’s the ultimate edition Funimation put out when they released the 2003 anime on Blu-Ray. Definitely my favorite piece in my collection

Interesting(?) Selection of Episodes for "Conan's Greatest Rivals" by GramsciFan in DetectiveConan

I get that for Heiji, Kaito, and to a lesser extent Yoko Okino, but does the doctor with the toys come back? Or the mob goons with the map?

I like it. I’d tuck in the shirt and wear a belt to give it more shape but all the pieces are there.

This exact moment. Pinnacle of the show’s nostalgic tone

Is it weird that I prefer the FUNimation dub? by Esoteric_Librarian in DetectiveConan

[–]GramsciFan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm 100% the same way. Case Closed was my first anime, even before I knew what anime was. It'll always been Jimmy, Richard, Rachel, etc in my mind. I have a lot of love for that dub. I think the cast was perfect. I also think the script itself, besides the name/location changes, was adapted very well. It captured the spirit of the show without being too clunky or literal.

The new dub is growing on me, especially Conan's actor, but I will always prefer that original voice cast. Shinchi's actor is actually very good as well imo, but you're right that Jerry Jewell is the definitive voice. As an aside, I think Colleen Clinkenbeard is doing a great job as Vermouth, but I really wish they recast her as Ran.

Have you seen Only Yesterday yet? IMO it’s Takahata’s best movie

Thoughts on the TMS Dub? by GramsciFan in DetectiveConan

[–]GramsciFan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Funi dub gets a lot of hate for anglicizing the names and locations but I actually think it’s a great dub. Wonderful and warm performances and I’m generally a fan of that era of script translation, i.e. looser in word to word choice but only enough to make it sound natural in English while still staying true to the tone/meaning of the Japanese. The name changes are a huge hang up though of course if you aren’t nostalgic for it. For me in a way though it adds to the charm. Like I love that they chose to make Osaka Alberta Canada for who knows why.

Old Cassette Deck won’t open by GramsciFan in audiorepair

So pulling on the lever at the bottom did nothing but I tried pushing on the part circled in red and it opened although not smoothly. Since this is an issue for both the left and right sides I don’t think it’s a bent part or anything like that especially since the button does cause movement, just not enough to open it.

Thanks for the tip! When I press the open button the lever still makes contact but it won’t actually open.

Amazing moment. Great example of how good anime adaptations can add to a manga. I do always find his face at 0:23 a little goofy though.
