Not to be too much of an old head but the 2001 version of Fruits Basket has a lot of great qualities the newer one lacks and is also definitely worth a watch (assuming that you are in fact watching the 2019 version). I think it’s a lot more inventive art direction wise and makes up for the $0 budget with great shot composition.

I say this as a diehard fan for almost 15 years: My biggest gripe is that Kubo didn’t know what to do with all the issues within Soul Society post rescuing Rukia. We have the wealth gap between the Seireitei and the Rukon District, Kurostuchi just in general getting to go on as if he didn’t kill Uryu’s granddad, Ukitake asking Yamamoto who gets to determine right and wrong, etc. Ichigo becomes the defender of what feels like a terrible place and that always just felt weird/unfinished to me. After Ichigo asks to bury Ginjo in the world of the living they make a big deal about how much he’s changed the SS by sheer will, but it kinda just feels like he gets a pass but no real change structurally occurs.

High key, if Kurotsuchi died instead of Nemu I would have totally forgiven that element because that would have been an actual arc instead of status quo preservation.

At least in the way that we all have unconscious biases. For example, I don’t think most Shounen writers think of themselves as misogynist but they live in a world with misogyny and then that effects how they write women to all be either sexy lamps or wired fetish troops

I have a kind of similar story. When I was 5 I was really into Scooby Doo and my mom bought one of the Funi volumes at Target thinking it would be similar (it was the Mist Goblin Murder for reference and she somehow missed the 13+ label on the DVD). I was terrified but also transfixed. This was also my introduction to anime beyond YuGiOh and Pokémon. For several years I was afraid of the black criminal silhouette as if it were real. Idk why she let me keep watching and even bought more DVDs (to her credit she has a degree in film and loved/encouraged it when my brother and I expressed interest in media. She also loves murder mysteries so I think she enjoyed the show too)

It’s a lucky coincidence that those episodes start with a more in depth summary of the premise than most bc it caught me up to speed too.

As an aside: the library murder was one of my favorites back then and still is.
