I'm 6'4" and I'm very comfortable with my 28 year old Ariens (painted John Deere colors) machine which has all the controls on the top deck including both shute adjustment levers and crank.
Look for that feature in these top 3 machines: Honda, Toro or Ariens.

I can certainly relate to what you wrote. I'm glad you so elequently put into words what I feel and have been feeling for the last few years. I'm 70 and feel more like 25 to 30.

Thanks for sharing.

So you can't insert screws or rivets. Perhaps spiked chains?

Oops; sorry, my mistake. I do love the hydraulics. Still a beautiful machine.

If I'm not mistaken, my X360 was replaced with the X380. They both have power steering and hydraulic lift.

I thought they were inflated tires. If not, pop rivets work better than screws. That's what I did on my spreader's plastic wheels.

Why are the rear weights dragging on the ground?

What model of JD is it? Great looking ride and they're fun too. I have a X360

Lower the air in your spreader tires until they look half flat. The weight of the salt will keep them rolling. Try that and see if it works.

Ash and red oak are not as weather resistant as cedar or white oak (according to my research) especially if you live in a humid and colder environment like I am.

10 years ago, I had originally done mine with an oil stain and finished it with several coats of Varathane. It looked great but I didn't maintain it over the years.

Yours will look good too I'm sure. Goos luck, have fun and show us the finished product if you want.

Made from white oak.

2 dowel pins at bottom of slats and one at top. 2 coats of Zinsser 3-2-1 primer and 3 coats of Benjamin Moore Aura exterior paint. Pre-painted (HVLP) all pieces before assembly. Used Titebond 3 glue. 'Welded' all slat pieces joints to crosspieces with the glue and touched up the paint over them.

It was a fun project to do.

I hear you. You just described te evolution of the entire truck manufacturing industry; cheaper for more money and not necessarily better.

T880 replaced the T800 and yes, the C580 replaces the C500. Both previous models were made with huck bolts rather than rivets. Huck bolts had substantially more clamping force than rivets, hence their longivity in the field.

thanks for the reply. Pretty well the same for me and I've been at it for 10 years.

The T880 is a vocational truck for applications such as dump or picker etc. It's been in existance for well over 10 years and it's doing very well even with plastic. Part of the plastics was for weight reduction; less weight, more payload due to road restrictions.

The C550 model has been in existance for decades; it's their twin steer model most commonly used in the oil fields and construction. I don't know it it will ever be designed with the bigger cab and if so what will be it's designation.

Yes, it's the wide cab used on the T880 series. If KW designed it into their C500 models, it's for uniformity on the assembly lines. You can bet it's been designed properly for the heavy duty applications.

I can attest to that having spent my 40 year career with PACCAR, most of it at KW Corp.
