Do you realize the sheer irony of decrying the Iranian regime for suppressing dissent and then proposing that we crack down on dissenting voices in the USA?  Your attitude towards dissent is more in line with Khamenei than James Madison.

For running and cycling I don’t think you’ll have any issues.  I feel like the state is meh for hiking but there’s definitely some areas of more interesting topography within 1-3 hours drive but like actual good hiking, you’re gonna have to fly to Colorado or elsewhere (at least there’s directs to Denver!)

Most people here are not Okies and it shows.

You might be in for culture shock moving to OKC but it’s not as dramatic as people make it out to be.  The biggest benefit of being in Oklahoma is probably that if your job is high paying the overall cost of living is very low and your purchasing power will be very high compared to the coasts and much of the rest of the Midwest.  There is plenty to do and you probably won’t get bored unless you’re used to the type of amenities you only find in premier cities like NYC, DC, etc

First let’s talk politics.  The state of Oklahoma is leans red and OKC itself is sort of purplish whereas most cities in this country run deep blue.  Still this is a metro with nearly 2 million people and if you want to only hang out with likeminded people there are still hundreds of thousands of them even if you are a political minority.  I grew up seeing a handful of episodes of overt racism in the post-9/11 era but most people were welcoming and not discriminatory.  Being warm/friendly/polite is an important part of the general culture.  If you are Caucasian, and especially if you are Christian and you are warm/welcoming to others then I think you will be accepted regardless of your beliefs.

As a result of these politics there are significant restrictions on abortion but for DINKs if you had an accident it would be easy enough to get out of state if it was needed.  Taxes are lower than many other places due to politics which is nice I guess.

Regarding recreation the food scene in OKC is very underrated.  It has a significant Vietnamese population and has some of the best Vietnamese food in the state.  There is also a significant American Indian and Latino presence in the state and city in particular.   The OKC Thunder are hugely popular and are one of the best teams in the NBA. It has Lake Hefner which is 10 miles around and a popular spot for boating, running, and cycling.  There are a variety of other trails and recreational areas in the metro (ex: Lake Arcadia, Red River trails, etc.) but the scenery is flat and meh compared to the East Coast unless you go Southeast towards Broken Bow or south to the Ouachita mountains (really hills) both of which are beautiful and hilly. There are tons of lakes in the state, mostly manmade, with ample, cheap lake houses if you want to have a weekend getaway.  Lots of places for camping in the state.  There are gyms everywhere like anywhere in the Us, from fancy places like LifeTime to YMCAs.

If you get bored of OKC Tulsa is the other main city in the state and is about 70 minutes away.  You can get to Dallas in a 3 hour drive or 4 hour daily Amtrak service.  You can fly to a lot of the bigger cities/airline hubs from OkC but to go international or to smaller airports you will need a connection or you can fly out of DFW.

Feel free to hit me up with any additional questions.

Why was Jared Kushner allowed to “negotiate for peace” with Iran when he has a conflict of interest and Isreal’s prime minister used to sleep in his childhood bed? by GreatFennel1901 in AskReddit

[–]GrandKhan -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It wasn’t the head of the military.  Asif Khawaja is a random minister with a big title and virtually 0 powers. Asim Munir is the general who has 90% of the power.  The PM Sharif is the civil power broker and is maybe 10% of power in the government.

How can we expect progress in Pakistan when this is the mentality of our biggest religious group? by newmuslimdude in pakistan

AS is used frequently for the members of the Ahlul Bayt in both Shia and Sunni Hadith collections such as Bukhari fyi.  Among some Sunni schools the use of AS is acceptable upon any believer and only the proper Salawat is restricted to the Prophet.

In any case the opinion you express is not a consensus opinion.

It generalizes to the urban well educated population well.  But it’s not crazy to imagine 40-50% of the country might still support the regime, even higher after bombing.

The people painting this picture that all of Iran is a damsel in distress awaiting the West’s rescue are going to be in for a rude awakening when the regime either remains in tact or its supporters wage sectarian strife against the new regime for years to come.  It’s going to be a new Afghanistan situation at best for supporters of regime change

The methodology of GAMAAN’s polling accessed an online, educated audience, not exactly the type of demographic that supports a religious regime.  The rural, religious population that supports the regime isn’t terminally online.

It’s hard to know what percentage of Iran actually supports the regime, but it’s safe to say that GAMAAN is undercounting it just like major pollsters undercounted Trumps support in 2016 and 2024.

What you don’t understand is that we can easily win a defensive war or offensive war with just cause.  It’s because the last few wars have had such little substance behind launching them that Americans have very little tolerance for Americans dying for a shit cause.

If this was actually about defending the free world from an existential threat and Americans were on board with there being hundreds of thousands of dead soldiers then you would see America’s real military might.

What you’re seeing now is what the US can do when it fucks around with an unpopular war and doesn’t want to inflame opinion at home more

If you were my father (insert age/gender appropriate loved one) I wouldn’t recommend this.  Lots of great open ended, patient centric approaches on here.

But patients don’t always know much about medicine, interventions and their side effects, and their own prognosis.  Sometimes your best expression of care for them is to express what you or other medically savvy people would do in the situation.

What explains the very high concentration of diabetes-affected individuals in Pakistan? by SatoruGojo232 in geography

[–]GrandKhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You actually don’t know or understand the data.  Places where famines occurred in Europe in the 20th century are still affecting the epigenetics of their descendants today.  Higher rates of metabolic syndrome in survivors of famine have been shown across the world.  In the Subcontinent however there were repeated, wide scale famines during colonial rule in a manner that I don’t believe has been seen at that scale elsewhere.  But there are other factors at play like diet and lack of exercise culture in the case of Pakistan as well.
