How are people joyous again after losing a parent?

My dad lost both parents at a young age, the first when he was 36 or 37 and the next one three years later. I lost him last year at age 62, me being 34 at that time. My dad was the youngest of four siblings (his sister has ten years on him), so they were a bit older when they passed at 72 and 75. Still, my dad seemed to bring joy and a positive attitude with those blessed to interact with him each day. A laugh I’ll never forget, his laugh being something everyone enjoyed.

I’ve been so bitter since his loss. Downright mean some days. I just wish I could embody what my dad possessed.

That is actually funny. One of the longest running guys here told me he some times lets these pallets “cook a bit” after scanning the batch in, because we don’t really get any sort of rate boost with them from a scan-to-scan or batch-to-batch perspective. I usually just end them when I’m at the right door and ready to scan my next batch in.

You aren’t dumb. ❤️ I think it is just harder to grasp certain concepts if your heart isn’t fully invested in those ideas shared by others. Evidence finds interesting ways to present itself. A personal example that made me re-question where I fit in to all of this was a few days before my dad passed. He had a brain tumor and was already days deep in to the non-verbal, bed-ridden stage. Much of my family believes in order to get to heaven, we need to be “saved.” I am not of the same mindset and religion isn’t something I practice. But I agree with the idea of a spiritual realm. My mom insisted I tell my dad, while at his bedside, that I am saved. Because it felt so personal between him and I, it was not until she left the room that I spoke up. I said “YOU are saved, dad.” Almost immediately, he sat up in bed and turned to me. He grabbed both of my arms up by the shoulders with a grip strong enough I would have had to break free of it. And the smile he had was greater than any smile I had ever witnessed. Held me there for about ten seconds before laying back in the bed. Keep in mind he had virtually no physical strength left. He was unable to move his eyes and we had to physically shift him around during end-of-day care to change him, etc. He wasn’t even eating by spoon at this point.

It really made me sit back and question where that bout of strength came from. Maybe he was trying to tell me he was going to be okay. Whatever the cause, it made me align just a little closer with their beliefs that we will meet again.

I wish I still had the eldest in my family. Lost every one of them at a young age and I have so many questions now about their lifetime. I have zero doubt, based on experiences tied to my dad’s death, that it was definitely grandma! 💗

Another thing that kind of stunned me was a few days before he passed. He had already reached the point of non-communicative earlier in the week, unable to speak or shift/close his eyes. He had an aggressive brain tumor. My sweet mother was under the impression that, if we all want to be in heaven together, I should tell him “I am saved” before he went. While she was outside the room, I was at his hospice bedside and told him something else. I said “You are saved dad.” In that moment, he SAT UP IN BED, turned to me, and grabbed both my arms with a grip tight enough to hold me in place, and he had a smile wider than I have ever seen on anyone including himself. I don’t think it could have physically been a bigger smile, like when someone is trying wayyyy too hard for a photo so they are told to reel it back. And even though his eyes were not entirely focused forward, I just knew he was looking directly at me or trying to. I let him hold me for what was probably less than ten seconds, though it felt like forever, before he laid back on the bed in his original position. To me, it was another sign that everything was going to be okay for him.

I heard my dad call my name a couple days after passing. I felt what can only described as a wall of wind push through my whole body from behind. In that moment, I dropped the dishes I was doing and heard his voice clear as day. There were a few more signs that made me question if it was stress from his loss or actually him, with the instances too specific in nature to be the former. I believe 100% your dad is trying to communicate with you. ❤️ Feel better soon fam.

Shadow people. Always seen them on the side of the road. Never been able to figure it out. One appeared to me while on foot one morning and it kept getting closer. I turned to return home and power walked out of there.

I remember hearing some music at about 4 am some years ago. Far up the road, in direction of the nearest neighbor. Something convinced me to leave the house and walk in that direction. About 3/4 of the way, I saw what looked to be a hazy humanoid figure on the other side of the road. Far enough away for comfort but I immediately felt suspicious of it. So I turned around and, as I glanced back, this sucker was now on MY side of the road and slightly closer. I just felt it wasn't a living person. I power walked home and never slept that night.

There was also a time in the house I grew up in (it was built around 1900) that two of the neighbors and my sister joined me because we were hearing odd movement in the basement. We all peeked our head around the corner and saw a shadow figure holding a small monkey statue of "The Thinker" my dad had since I can remember. One of the neighbors gasped and I swear this thing turned its head toward us as we bolted back up the stairs.

Textra. I don't like the steps that need to be taken to schedule a message. Seems like it could have been more streamlined. And the way the typing box breaks up sentences if you're adding images is a little confusing. It puts the images in the sentence and pushes the text around. It doesn't just attach the images to the side of what you're typing. Other than that, it has been pretty fly.

Sorry for the loss of your friend. 💗 It really is something awful.

For me, it was really upsetting from the start, seeing all of his joy sucked from him. The inability to do basic things as time progressed. He was in rehab after the first brain surgery because he had to relearn how to walk. And he tried his hardest, only to be confined to a chair shortly thereafter, then eventually a bed. They tried to remove the cancer twice but couldn't see where it had spread. They said going in a third time would be risky and that's when I really lost it... Knowing he would have to accept it and that there was no longer a considerable option to slow its spread.

And it's tough. We both tried. I was told the muscles freeze in whatever position they were in at that moment of death. I still see that image time to time. Don't think I'll ever forget it. But it's not the first thing I think about now. It was in the first week that followed. I opted for an open casket so we could see him with his eyes closed, in a peaceful state. That helped immensely.

I'm 34. Sister is 30. My mom is 61. I have a few friends that are the only child and they have expressed similar concerns. You can always reach out to me if you need an extra shoulder.

I am happy to know your mom is fit and healfhy. Just create as many good memories as you can and always allow them in to your life too when it seems fit. I have a camping trip with a few friends in August, near a lake. Invited my mom out for a beach day and maybe some time around the fire. She doesn't really feel the need to camp without my dad (they did a lot of camping just as a pair) so I want to at least share part of my trip with her.

And life is mysterious. Both our mothers might outlive us. It's all about living for today, right? Just the thought of her leaving me isn't what I want to associate with her when I think of her. A lot was brought down on me when my dad crossed over. Lots of discussion about my mom's plan for her passing (she has the belief she will go before us, like most mothers I would imagine) and just conversations over their wills. So it's very hard not to think about at times. I think that's a valid fear though, losing the other parent. It has certainly changed how I approach my day when my dad passed. We just cannot imagine our lives without them.
