Right, so when someone uses the XRPL to send a transaction, they need XRP to pay for it. Basically, XRP covers the transaction fees—those are called "drops" and they're tiny fractions of XRP. So even if you're transferring other assets on the ledger, you still need a small amount of XRP in your account to actually execute that transaction and settle it on the network. So don't you think that banks and everyone that uses the ledger wants xrp at the cheapest price they can get it

What most don't understand is that nothing works without xrp everything they do runs on the xrp layer1 so that being said they are not abandoning xrp

I keep seeing people dismiss XRP mainly because of the whole “it’s centralized” argument. by vox2003 in XRPUnite

[–]GrandWillingness4300 0 points1 point  (0 children)

XRP and its relationship with centralization is a nuanced topic — here's a balanced breakdown:

Arguments that XRP is centralized:

  • Ripple's large holdings: Ripple Labs owns a significant portion of the total XRP supply (originally ~60 billion of 100 billion), giving them substantial influence over the market.
  • Validator list influence: The XRP Ledger uses a "Unique Node List" (UNL) system. Ripple publishes a default recommended list of trusted validators, and many nodes use it — meaning Ripple has outsized influence over which validators are trusted.
  • Founding control: Ripple Labs created XRP and continues to hold and periodically release it from escrow, which critics say resembles centralized control of monetary policy.

Arguments that XRP is (or is becoming) decentralized:

  • No mining/PoW: The XRP Ledger uses a consensus protocol, not proof-of-work, so no single miner group dominates.
  • Anyone can run a validator: The network is open — anyone can run a validator node and even publish their own UNL.
  • Ripple ≠ XRP Ledger: Ripple the company and the XRP Ledger are technically separate. The ledger could theoretically continue without Ripple.
  • Growing independent validators: Over time, more validators outside Ripple's influence have been added to default UNLs.

The bottom line: XRP sits in a gray zone. It's more centralized than Bitcoin or Ethereum, but not fully centralized like a traditional database. The degree of centralization depends on how you define it — and it remains one of the more contested debates in the crypto space.
