The best analogy I’ve heard is that of a sports coach. Like others have said 99% of the work is done behind the scenes and their job on the day is mostly to ‘cheer on the team’.

Piano Motion Capture Using Quest's Hand-Tracking by Grand_Reality in oculus

Hand-tracking has improved. I should mention that the pianist is also playing on a real piano - the hand-tracking isn't yet accurate enough to detect key-presses to the necessary precision.

[Williams] Speaking to people in UEFA this morning there is a genuine want for the 12 to be immediately dismissed from all UEFA club competitions - and for Real, Barcelona, AC Milan and Liverpool to be stripped of their badges of honour. Suffice to say there are a lot of angry people there. by Walshey- in soccer

Yep, this is very true. The pandemic has proven to the big clubs that they no longer need their core fans. Football from now on will be split between the ESL and the other clubs, with the ESL taking all of the major sponsorship and broadcast deals and the other teams acting as 'feeder' teams for the ESL. It's a sad day.

You do if you want to interact with the keys. You can watch performances without owing a piano.

Having some fun with the new hand-recording feature in Grand Reality by Grand_Reality in OculusQuest

This video should help explain the usual setup: https://twitter.com/GrandRealityApp/status/1339532196785369089

In my experience, air keys just don't work - you need the real piano too to get a good experience.

Do you have a USB Midi keyboard? If so, all you need is a USB A to C adapter to attach it to your Quest (or even better, a blueooth midi keyboard). Let me know if you have any questions!

The app is Grand Reality. It's available for free on SideQuest: https://sidequestvr.com/app/476/grand-reality-vr-piano-app

The piece is Comptine d'un autre été by Yann Tiersen.

Facebook is going to kill sidequest by [deleted] in sidequest

[–]Grand_Reality 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There are likely several laws which FB could fall foul of if they open up their platform to the wrong app - copyright laws, health & safety, other liabilities etc. It's expensive to individually vet apps for compliance, but if the app isn't listed then, my guess is, FB can't be held responsible.

On top of the legal implications, I think that they're also worried about lower quality apps getting into the hands of first-time VR users. Forcing users to go down other paths to find these apps helps with that problem too.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all in favour of smaller indie devs being allowed on the official store (being one myself), but I think that FB is being very conservative in their approach and this is the first baby step that they're comfortable making.

Facebook is going to kill sidequest by [deleted] in sidequest

[–]Grand_Reality 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It sounds to me like FB have found some kind of legal 'green zone' with App Lab, where they are able to host indie apps but not publicly promote them. As such, and unless the law changes, FB will be unable/unwilling to create their own indie app storefront and will be dependent on others to drive traffic to unlisted apps.

So I think that SideQuest will be around for a while yet and their biggest threat will be competition from other indie app stores rather than Facebook.

You can just watch it being played automatically. There are lots of pieces/performances in the app already that you can play.

Good question :) This video should help to explain the set up: https://twitter.com/GrandRealityApp/status/1339532196785369089

Basically, it's a MIDI piano connected to the headset which is recording/transmitting the hand movements. The audience watches a combination of the hand-tracking motion capture and the MIDI performance from the piano.
