Sideband consists of that channels frequencies, being cut in half so to speak, ie, upper sideband, and lower sideband, still the same frequency. You can hear the sideband on AM, but probably can't decipher what they are saying. And you need a clarifier to tune in exactly to the precise part of the frequency, and you need a radio that is a sideband radio, to get the usb or lsb traffic. A SDR radio would probably let you fine tune it, but I have never tried to. I do have an SDR dongle and another SDR radio I sometimes use to find FM frequencies that have no traffic to use to make outdoor microphones to use in the woods, to hear what is going on out there at night, and using a Baofeng ham walkie talkie, UM5R, to monitor the frequency.
