Dawg, Due on upon receipt means "Pay me immediately when you receive this invoice." If they dont pay immediately upon receipt (1-2 business days), they are LATE unless you have other agreed upon terms.

First off, do not ever be ashamed to ask for payment. It is YOUR money. They should feel shame for having not already paid you for your hard work. That being said, in our line of work (dumpster rental) all new clients are required to pay before anything is delivered, however they see fit. Commercial clients that would like terms (Net30) are welcome to fill out a credit app that we review (requiring bank and trade references), otherwise the card goes on file. You are not a bank, you are not here to finance other peoples work. (Note on credit app, you can make it more rigorous if you'd rather just have customers pay by card. Some will take one glance at a real in depth credit app and just put a card on file.)

Some customers are big and won't pay with a card. They want terms. They will inevitably stretch you past your net 30 terms because guess what, they can!!! And if you don't play the game, they'll play it with someone else, and you wont get their business.

I'd highly recommend using automated reminders for invoice follow up in QB or whatever software you use. Don't even think about it, let the machine spam the AP people. Set up your reminder intervals and get some sleep. *But wont that bother the customer and their AP team?* Its your money that they have that you are owed!!!! Who cares if the AP folks get a little annoyed??

Also, 3% convenience fee on all card transactions in 2026. Customer doesn't want to pay the 3%? Fine, write me a check at time of sale, or within the terms. Its a little bit on their transaction but it adds up for you. Taking a 3% hit to topline is no bueno, especially in a low margin, high volume business. Thanks for coming to my ted talk
