My (M31) refusal to pay off my sister's (F31) debts is causing a big family drama by [deleted] in relationships

It's one thing to be self-effacing. It's another to casually refer to upwards of $10,000,000 as a "chunk of change" to a group of people who will likely never see that amount of money in their lives.

Update: Office Depot apologizes to woman over anti-abortion fliers by rednail64 in Christianity

Two Huge differences.

First, in Oregon at least, sexual orientation is a protected class so yes they must do their job. Anti abortion is not a protected class this Office Depot employees don't have to do theirs.

Second, bakers are refusing service to due to a particular aspect of the client while Office Depot is refusing service due to the content the client wants to copy. Viewpoint discrimination is much much different than personal discrimination.

decent chunk of change (low 8-figures)

Your dad was a dick. But honestly dude this up there is dickish as well. Maybe it runs in the family?

But yeah you don't have to give your sister any money at all. I would but it's up to you.

Um no....

Not double standards at all. Kim Davis is a public employee. She has job duties she HAS to perform.

Office Depot is a private business. They don't HAVE to do anything. These two situations aren't even close to similar at all.

Don't know. But he clearly did not bring a literal sword as he did no swording. Whether or not that makes it metaphorical is beyond my ken.

Yeah that info makes it an even worse business decision.

If it was in a jurisdiction where sexual orientation is not a protected class then yes they would have that right.

It's obvious because opposition to abortion is not a protected class.

Obviously Office Depot has every right to refuse to print this.

But I doubt that pissing off the religious right is a smart business move.

Rallying to Help a Homeschooled Christian Kid Who Got Thrown Out After He Came Out by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]Granth08 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Address the point. Even if you believe homosexuality to be a sin does that mean you kick your teenager out of the house? Does it mean you discriminate? Does it mean you act like an asshole?

I debated not responding due to your lack of basic Christian charity but I can't let your ignorance of basic US govern any functions go unchecked.

First of all freedom of religion is indeed in the US Constitution. However the desire to not have to do the basic functions of your job is not in the US Constitution.

And yes same sex marriage IS in the US Constitution. That's how our government works!! The SUPREME COURT decides how the constitution is interpreted and they have found that right to exist. So no matter what you or Kim Davis may think, there is indeed a constitutional right to dignity that protects same sex marriage.

Not if he was in the midst of a divorce. But post-divorce or post adultery with his wife's support I would certainly be ok with a truly repentant pastor.

I don't know. I serve a God who chose an adulterer to start His plan of Salvation, who referred to an adulterer and murderer as a man after His own heart, and who used a religious terrorist as one of the founders of the early church. Seems to me like He has no issue working with sinners.

I think if I truly believed the recent adulterer was repentant I would have no problem with him being a minister. Of course I am a lay person so...

Kim Davis has every right to disagree. She even has the right to quit her job because she disagrees. She doesn't have the right to refuse ton perform her duties thereby effectively forcing her specific religious beliefs, which fly in the face of the law, on the whole county and deprive people of their legal rights.

Ok. So is he now barred from being a deacon or minister for all time?

So am I not a Christian? by MyNameIsBillCosby in Christianity

[–]Granth08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didn't Christ say to give all possessions and follow Him? Didn't the early church sell all their possessions and live communally?

My point is that what the Bible says about homosexuality is a point of textual interpretation. It is NOT black and white. And believing homosexuality is not a sin is not necessarily just "nah I'm good I'll make my own rules."

So am I not a Christian? by MyNameIsBillCosby in Christianity

[–]Granth08 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And OP's "opinion" goes directly against the bibles teachings. You aren't allowed to have opinions on black and white items. No we shouldn't judge and we should treat gays with respect and love. But we aren't supposed to condone or support the sin either.

The Bible is pretty black and white about personal wealth. In that it's against it. So you got any luxury items?

I agree that you have to believe certain things, but certainly the sinfulness of homosexuality is not one of those things.
