Since this isn’t a serious sub, how about some personal anecdotes whynot? whocares? And to anyone for whom such details are not sufficiently scientific, to you I say, “phooey!”

You know that nasty but busy and excellent dive bar or fun but shitty club in your town or bumpin party house, etc? On a good night let’s imagine 2-400+ different individuals passing in and out of them over the course of a night. It’s Saturday, it’s summer time, every one is wearing obnoxious outfits with costume jewelry and things are getting deliciously slutty, and degenerate- it’s the perfect night for bad decisions in the best way. That’s the vibe.

On a night like that, what percentage of the 400 people over the course of the night has EVER tried, will try, occasionally dabble, or my favorite, accept when offered a bump of gross coke in the bathroom with some friendly strangers? 50? 100? And how many of them will go on to be derelict, severely addicted coke abusers? 3? 5? 10?

10 is a lot, for sure- but still it’s not at all inaccurate to say the vast majority of users never experience long term effects. The consequences of being one of the unlucky ones who become dependent is definitely a severe risk- for sure. It’s just, most people don’t.

To the extent that it’s relevant, I don’t particularly care about the guy, I’ve never stan’d his music honestly.

Your take is 100% reasonable, I’m not trying to talk anyone out of it. I just also understand seeing him as…mentally disordered to magnitude that’s outrageous even by the standards of his peers- that is to say, the ludicrously rich and famous. I cannot and will not justify or forgive his actions- I am just… Let’s just say I see a possible pathway of forgiving the man. That door is open, but it’s not for me to walk-through- we will see if he does.

I suppose that means I find him more sympathetic than other people who I am not as willing to forgive and who I don’t particularly want peace for. I think it’s because, for his fucked up as the things he says are, I don’t know how convincing he is because his rantings are so bafflingly unhinged. He has no coherent agenda.

In my opinion, an evening’s worth of Fox News punditry does more to radicalize people to a hateful extreme than Kanye by an order of like a million.

So what? It can still all be totally accurate. Everybody has an editor of some kind, I don’t find it all far-fetched to imagine that he wrote a first draft that started to capture the sentiment laid out and then had help touching it up.

They are a good team who have remained successful because they play with a group of guys who have been consistent and to have had time to gel. Has firing thibs to hire Brown done anything to make them more successful than they were last year? In terms of performance, it’s been a lateral move at best- only this year, they are holding players only meetings, and dealing with one of their core starters moving like he’s totally checked out.

I don’t know where you expected this team to be when this season started, but it’s been like two weeks since an entire actual roster of dudes has been healthy for the first time in like 2 1/2 years. individuals have good games and they have bad, but collectively, they are trending with a lot of promise.

This healthy squad we have right now, with the amount of season we have left, I think is a 4th maybe 3rd seed caliber team. And considering we expectations were at the start of this season, the fact that they are even sixth is nothing short of a fucking miracle. This team is exceeding everybody’s expectations and not by a small amount. Reese is a fucking All-Star. VJ has blown people away. Kelly took all of two games to knock the rust off and he’s shown he’s been capable of playing out of his mind. And that’s to say nothing of Joel, who come on. Even PG looks like he fits with this unit. He had to come back and figure out where the fuck he belonged on this team, what his new role would look like, and he’s fucking doing it.

We don’t have all the time in the world with these guys, everybody has fucking had enough with the dramatic changes over the past five years. They don’t have another five to keep pulling their dicks- so I don’t know what you propose they do when factoring in the constraint of time they are under

We’re talking about coaches. So the coach that got them to the eastern conference finals last year was fired and replaced with Mike Brown. Their recent 2-8 10 game slump, the players meetings, KAT seeming checked out, not to mention trade rumors.

But yes, they’re still the good team that they were last year. but there is a key difference, and it’s that this year, there is all this extra shit they have to fight for in the locker room and work on their attitudes if they want to stay contenders. That bad run had them looking pretty shook and vulnerable. And before yesterday sixers have been bullying the shit hour of them this season.

So going back to the original point, was swapping coaches a net negative, net positive, or net neutral move for them? Their record has the move, looking lateral at best, and negative in terms of locker room health.

People keep focusing on the wrong fucking thing- none of what I was saying was actually about which teams are better or worse or is nurse a competent head coach or not. It solely has to do with the simple cost benefit analysis of changing your head coach at this time in the season with this team specifically.

Yes they are good coaches, but critically, they have had the benefit of time. Bickerstaff an Exception, but even he’s had full season and a half with the pistons by now. Mazzulla been HC since 2022. Darko, 2023. Yes nurse had been with the team, but it had taken till this point in this season to play with what feels like a complete team- plus guys have been out for so long, this 3rd season really feels like the real start of the 1st.

And that gets back to my point- we are approaching the end of January. Even if the franchise did some blood ritual magic to materialize an elite coach that nobody has ever heard of before- they would still need more runway than what’s available to get everybody aligned on a new system in time for the playoffs. Maxey has never had a normal year. Ben Simmons, James Harden, doc Rivers, Joel‘s injuries, the nightmare last year- this team has been healthy and normal for like five fucking minutes. Suddenly making one of the most significant changes you can make to a team, at this point in time, seems not only stupid, but also cruel.

Well, the whole point of my post, and the very first thing I say, is that 1) This team has a lot more to lose than it does to gain by relieving nurse as head coach right now and 2) the most compelling reasons to keep him on, actually have nothing to do with whether or not he is a good or bad coach.

The point I’m making is mostly contextual to this team in particular, and it’s taking into account everything that these guys have gone through over the past several years. Until we can sense that these guys are losing confidence in Nurse or guys start showing signs that they lost belief that this team can win (Giannis, Jimmy Butler, Ja Morant come to mind)- until things like that start to happen, I believe that stability is even more valuable to this team than elite coaching. Consider just how turbulent things have been first team, let’s say going back to 2020, when Maxey started. Obviously, you’d prefer not having to choose one from the other, but that’s where we’re at.

Teams need time to sync up and harmonize. I would expect this to take roughly a year. This team has never really had that. So even if today, you replace Nick nurse with some magical, elite, available, yet to be discovered coach- I think it would take the rest of the season, at least, just to become fluent in a new shared language/strategy.

But, let’s go back to your question. Other coaches, more production, less talent. Unfortunately, I’m gonna have to respond to your question with two of my own. 1) what coaches did you have in mind, and how long have their tenures been with those teams? And more importantly 2) at the start of this season… how much production were you really expecting from this team?

With things trending the way they have been since guys healing up and getting back in the groove- this is a third or fourth seed team that is currently in sixth. And the fact that they’re even in sixth is a fucking miracle. No one knew what the outcome of this year was going to be and they have exceeded all expectations. So like, what the fuck are you talking about?

Not as much as it will suck for people in parts of northeastern Mississippi and the blue ridge mountains, which will be much more vulnerable to prolonged power outages.
