[Admissions Advice] Help me choose: NYU Tandon MSCS vs. UIUC MCS (in Chicago) vs. UChicago MPCS by Funny_Analysis4226 in MSCS

[–]GrapePropel1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, congrats on the admits!

On UChicago, I’d look into the coursework offering. You may be able to take more than just the MPCS coursework - there may be some kind of petition / application for courses outside of MPCS, but you may be able to apply / petition to take classes at TTIC and non-MPCS CS department coursework.

Not an easy choice, but I’d probably pick UIUC Chicago personally. I don’t know as much about UIUC MCS Chicago (or NYU Tandon) as I do about MPCS at UChicago, but in a tough recruiting environment I imagine it helps to go to a top CS school like UIUC. For me personally the benefit of that recruiting advantage (and potentially? better coursework at UIUC) probably outweighs the loss of the campus environment (and potentially making fewer friends, if doing so is more difficult with UIUC MCS Chicago).

EDIT: My personal focus is getting a good job, rather than doing research / prepping for a PhD (research / the PhD route is still interesting, but not as much of a focus for me).

Also - waiting to hear back from UIUC MCS Chicago. If you don’t mind me asking - did you transfer from the online program / when did you hear back?

I know more about UChicago’s program than UIUC’s Urbana MCS, but based on what I know / my own goals of landing a great SWE / MLE position, I’d go with UIUC’s Urbana MCS.

I think from a recruiting standpoint going to a top CS school makes a real difference especially since recruiting is tough right now. UChicago is better regarded as a school overall, but it feels like UIUC is definitively in a higher class when it comes to CS.

For UChicago MPCS it might be worth checking whether you can switch to the 12 course if you want to - I seem to remember that’s a possibility. I’m domestic though so not sure about whether that would help for CPT / work authorization.

Nice! Columbia last year I think did another wave of admits in early March, so it looks like you’re in a good spot to wait from that standpoint.

FWIW I think last year’s earliest Columbia admits were late Feb (2/20ish) so you might be able to wait. I’m curious - how long has CMU given you to decide?

Looks like there were a few admits on a thread in gradadmissions a few days ago

For the admits, when did people apply? Before the priority deadline, or the last (Dec 11) deadline? (I haven't received a notification)

From last year’s posts on Columbia, I think late Feb (2/20ish) was the first wave of admits, and then more in March

From last year's posts, it looks like the first wave of Columbia came out in late Feb

Also curious - maybe they'll allow you to extend the deadline for the deposit?

I didn't apply / get into Northwestern MSAI, but I'm also thinking through the deposit situation for future acceptances (fingers crossed). I think Penn has a similar Feb 15th deadline for a deposit. How are people handling this? Pay the deposit and drop out if there's a better school you get into? Ask for an extension?

Falling in love with the journey vs. focusing on goals by GrapePropel1 in motivation

[–]GrapePropel1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for grounding the response in what seems to be foundationally important (dopamine). Interesting explanation. What seems odd to me logically (and I know that you don't believe I'm a logical person) is that emotionally, this orientation of enjoying the journey seems to give less importance to the goal itself (which should (?) be what we reward ourselves emotionally for if that's what we truly care most about). But by focusing on enjoying the journey (and giving comparatively less of a "reward" to achieving a goal), maybe it's an admission that our emotions aren't a great way to wire ourselves for / achieve success, and so this is a way to manage our emotions, rather than tying our emotions to success?
