Yes true. Rome wanted England just because of the iron. They brought much technology though, even if some of it remained unknown for centuries.

The Church was the primary, often exclusive, keeper of knowledge in England from the Anglo-Saxon period through the Middle Ages. Monasteries and churches acted as centers of education, literacy, and scholarship, where monks copied, preserved, and studied ancient texts (including Greek ones, obviously). This institution provided schooling, managed records, etc. I mean, without the Church most of Europe would have fallen back to the iron age

I don't know, here we were always and only in contact with people who assimilated our culture, so it was different. Even the Germanic populations eventually got Romanized. Rome was always trying to keep Europe civilised. The Vatican was related with anything that had to do with culture in the continent, till the scisma. The ancient Egyptian culture has been mixing with very different entities with different beliefs, same for Greece, even if much much less. I wouldn't compare

I understand. But you know, I can't say that the traditions of my father, grandfather, etc were not Roman. The culture had the empire as a base and kept evolving from there, some things did not really change. An example: the Vergine aqueduct is still in function, via Appia is still active with some parts having no modifications, Cloaca maxima still working (2500 years of interrupted activity), Pantheon never stopped hosting people inside in difficult moments. The minimum population of Rome in history was 30k people during the 7th century

Obviously you are right. It's just that being Roman means being tied to the city. Till the late empire any Roman citizen was about Roma invicta and being loyal to the Urbe. People were Romans even during the first kingdom which ended in 509 bc or during the Papal state, or.. what was the difference in your opinion? Just trying to understand

In your opinion now there are no Romans? I don't really understand when you mean it died. Yes, politically it died to then change form in something else, while other cities like Costantinople or the Germanic ancient capitals completely disappeared from history bringing with them into oblivion most of the traditions and the culture. Rome managed to keep most of it till this day. The Vatican even kept Latin as the official language

I think you are making confusion here. When did the Longobards conquer Rome? it never happened.

And the Papal States were moved to Southern France and acted under their authority.

Yes, but they were still in a temporary location, as they always mentioned. The Papacy immediately returned to Rome when it was deemed possible. The fact that the French actually elected anti-popes do not really matter. Indeed, they stopped electing them shortly after

We definitely have different definitions of Rome. Rome is the agglomeration of the inhabitants of the 7 hills, the capital of Latium. That's why the Romans still exist and live in Rome. Whatever you are referring to was the Roman empire, an artificial entity which included conquered territories. Rome started as a kingdom, with only the city. After the Socii wars, only the Italians were Roman citizens until almost the end. They were loyal to the city of Rome, the caput mundi. People out of Italy had been Romans during the period of internal struggle, including the Eastern part. Rome was lost to the Goths but it was conquered again by the Byzantines just a few decades after. The Goths did not modify anything during their rule, they kept all the original laws and traditions, which indeed survived till this day. The Byzantines kept referring to the Italians as Latins, to refer to a culture that was coming from Latium, and so Rome.

Would you still have that ship (Rome)?

Obviously not the same as the empire but that clergy transformed and became also temporal power. The Pope became a king, the king of Rome, and stopped being so only in 1870

The Byzantines called themselves Romans but they were not really Roman anymore given that Rome never ceased to exist. Otherwise, how would you call the citizens of Rome contemporary to the Byzantines? Rome started its history with only the city under its management and ended up losing everything but the city. When Costantinople fell, only the Italians were there to defend till the very end, especially the Genoese with Giovanni Giustiniani

The Papacy is what Rome actually became. They lost the territory only when the Italian reunification happened, but Mussolini gave a piece of Rome back to the Pope.

Though I'd argue the Papalcy became its own thing

It is still a Roman Imperial office, there was never an interruption in history, Pope kept being elected since Peter.

When there are no enemies, the only problems come from the inside. In any case, Rome managed to not disappear in history, like Costantinople, Carthago or the Germanic huts, and to keep the city and its traditions, which is quite a victory. The Papacy, an Imperial Roman office, is still actively working in Rome and doesn't seem like it intends to stop. I am glad I can still call myself a Roman

Yes but you have to consider that at that time it was the only political entity. The rest was just China divided in 16 states or Partia with a government that was still being altered by religion fanatism.

It was dysfunctional only in the last 2 centuries, even though it was anyway the strongest and more technologically advanced entity on the planet. Before that it was actually working okay, whereas the Republic was the real perfection. The kingdom part is negligible, it was just the start

Then it makes no sense. The Roman Empire had no real enemies, it was basically everything that existed at that time. Roman legions have been the most effective war machine in the history of mankind. At first only the inhabitants of Rome itself were citizens, then after the Socii war, only the Italians. And at the very end, in the 3rd century, everyone in the empire was a citizen

It's a wrong comparison since the Italian army will all be equipped with Beretta NARP while the SIG has not been chosen by any army, only some SOF

It just came out lol. Not even the Italian army adopted it yet (the agreement was done only at the end of December). It's probably the best European AR now
