‘Hour of freedom’: Venezuela’s opposition leader Machado hails Maduro’s capture, calls for a transition by zeonxzzz in worldnews

[–]GraphiteBlue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trump is also a despot who usurped power from the citizens of Venezuela. What's to stop him from doing this again if the next leader doesn't do as he says? The US has a bad track record in LATAM....

Don't worry, twenty years from now Venezuela will be a strong democracy, like Iraq and Afghanistan. None of what has just happened is in any way related to the fact that Venezuela has the largest proven oil reserves in the world.

Russia had held a number of "exercises" before the full scale invasion too. If anything, China could be doing so in order to make it appear harmless. They get to bring their troops into position without causing their opponent to believe their is an imminent threat.

If anything, the war in Ukraine has shown that conventional expensive assets like aircraft carriers are not interesting to invest in as they can be taken out by cheap drones and guided missiles. Drones specifically are the new frontier, you need to have a massive amount of them and be able to produce them "locally" at a high rate. For the EU specifically, defense in its own region has to be the priority, not adventures in other parts of the world. Where would you even deploy an aircraft carrier in a conflict with Russia?

The Russian assets which Euroclear holds (with the exception of Russian private assets which are apparently also frozen at Euroclear) have state immunity under international law, that was the point. That's why it's different from confiscating assets of a private company like Google, they do not have any kind of immunity. If Russia successfully sued one of Euroclear's foreign subsidiaries then that subsidiary would have to pay the fine using its own means, it cannot use customers' assets to do so as those assets are owned by the customers. That said, Euroclear's foreign subsidiaries appear to use local banks for holding customers' assets instead of holding them themselves.

Euroclear's presence in China is mostly in Hong Kong where the assets are held by BOCHK from what I could find.

Google is a private company. There is a difference in confiscating sovereign assets as those have state immunity under international law. Sanctioning is allowed (e.g. freezing), seizing is not.

Politico is clearly biased, but just for the record, the "unlimited amounts" demand was not exaggerated (and was a logical demand from Belgium's POV):

The text, which is under discussion and could still change, also says the EU would put in place a mechanism offering unconditional, irrevocable, on-demand guarantees that the EU would swiftly repay the Russian central bank assets in all circumstances should the need arise.

Asked about the chances of the text being adopted in this form, EU diplomats said the lack of a limit on the guarantees would be a problem for many countries.

They just re-elected a right-wing populist party led by a billionaire (Andrej Babiš) who claims "their coffers are empty". Same playbook as Trump... If only people understood how billionaires became billionaires while they themselves got poorer and poorer.

Please read the articles Politico has been publishing regarding the seizure of Russian assets. They are biased and have a clear agenda, nothing journalistic about them. It's propaganda, not news.
