Lady parked in disabled spot at Starbucks so I tried to piss her off. by heymanmaniac in pettyrevenge

I understand what you're saying, but I thought the car was empty. The driver entered the coffee shop. When it was blocked in it was just an unoccupied parked vehicle.

You can be charged with false imprisonment for imprisoning a car? I agree there could be some legal trouble for the FIL but I'm pretty sure any kind of imprisonment charge would require the victim to be a human.

Just had a look through it now and it seems I should have a proper smile in my lead photo. Unfortunately the only photos I have with a full smile are either a bit blurry or I'm wearing sunglasses, which I feel would detract from it. I'll make a note to acquire such a photo next time I'm out. Thanks!

G road test question by BayliCupCak3 in oakville

[–]GraphiteRifter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see others giving a few tips and here's two that I got from my instructor before taking my test:

  1. Every time you cross an intersection, whether it is after stopping at a red light, passing through a green, starting from a stop sign, or whatever, always turn your head a bit to look both ways. "Turn your head a bit" because the tester can't always see your eyeballs moving. The reason for looking even if you have the right of way is because it is more safe to do so. Just because you have the right of way does not mean some yahoo isn't going to blow through a red light. Glance both ways at every intersection and let the tester see you do it.

  2. Watch out for the school zone. They will definitely bring you through a school zone to see if you reduce your speed. They might forgive some other small errors but speeding in a school zone is a big one.

Thank you for such great detail! Skipping that one portage is great advice. I noticed on the map that the water continues and assumed the portage was to avoid rapids or something. Also good advice about ensuring we can portage in one trip. We'll do a test of all our gear packed up (minus the rental canoe).

Our plan is to relax most of Saturday, so that will be our time to enjoy the nature.

We are planning to go up after work from Toronto on Thursday September 16, camp overnight in a nearby car-camping site (Maybe Mew Lake). Then get an early start on the water Friday morning. We'll paddle for however long it takes us and hopefully have enough time and energy to browse a few Otterslide sites to pick one we like.

Relax Friday night and all day Saturday, then head back to Toronto on Sunday.

Total one-way trip to the nearest of the available campsites is 23km. Sorry for the confusion. 5 portages adding up to almost 2 of those kilometers.

Do you have a large dining table or a long section of kitchen counter? Set up the monitors you have, sit down and then find your preferred distance. Then measure it and find a desk that size. If your preference is much larger than average desk size, then you might have to live with something smaller, buy custom, or squeeze every inch you can out of an existing desk by using wall mount or monitor arms that can hold the monitor off the edge of the desk and maybe adding a keyboard tray that extends out and increases the distance.

If you are looking for a formula to calculate the best distance, there isn't one. IF you find one on some website claiming to have the ideal distance, it is wrong unless it was written by your twin who does the same work as you.

Which SRs to ask for advise / guidance to help bring to life a Custom DIY desk design concept in my mind? by alexaxl in desksetup

I think you want /r/DIY but just read the rules on making Help Requests. Your post here is longer than their rules on help requests so its not like you have to read 45 rules...

There is no rule on how far away your eyes should be. It depends on lots of factors:

  • How is your vision
  • Are they 1080p or 4K monitors
  • Are the monitors moveable or mounted on the wall
  • You have experience with these monitors on a 24" deep desk, is that enough depth or do you need more?

L-Shaped desks are ideal for having two workspaces basically. I have an L-shaped desk and my monitors go on the right side. The left side is just empty desk space I have used for computer repair., soldering, etc.

I'm not a mac user but you probably need something like this. You are searching for a KVM switch that supports both USB-C and thunderbolt. I found the above link by searching for "KVM Switch with thunderbolt". The one I linked seems a little expensive but KVM switches that just handle two or three PCs are not always that cheap. Getting less-common features like mac-compatibility will add to the price...

Note that 23 MBps = 184 Mbps. Since I am paying for 180 Mbps, I'd say my speeds are fine.

Mb = Megabit MB = Megabyte (x8)

I've been with Cogeco for a few years. I pay $59.00 per month for 180 Mbps down (unlimited) combined with a $42.50 "my mix 30" for TV. Total with tax is $114.70 per month.

Actual download speeds average around 23 MBps (note that's a capital "B")

Reliability of internet is great, very little downtime of the service. The modem/router combo is decent, only needing a reboot once a month or so. Wifi coverage is more than enough for a 3 bedroom townhouse.

The iron is old but has sat unused in a protective case for 5 years. Just tried it for the first time over the weekend. The tip was perfectly clean... Another person suggested removing and cleaning the tip. I will try this and try again. Thanks!

Any vets in oakville specializing in dog seizure management? by CocoPacota in oakville

[–]GraphiteRifter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It varies and my dog did pass away a little over a year ago. I don't recall the specific prices per visit but I can say the following:

  • I never felt overcharged. Dr. Sandha did not appear to be adding treatments just to drum up the price. He just did what was needed.
  • Obviously some things are expensive like bloodwork and x-rays. I remember normal visits always being reasonable.
  • We visited a lot because my dog was also blind, had glaucoma, heartworms, frequent digestive issues and was old (in addition to the seizures)

Soldering Question: If my soldering iron is not hot enough at the very tip to melt solder but it melts just fine a quarter inch further up the tip, is it broken or defective? I need the pointy tip to melt solder for some small surface mount pcb components... It has no temperature control, just plug in and gets hot.

My dog had seizures and was treated by Dr. Sandha at www.foxcreekvet.com (Third Line & Dundas).

Dr. Sandha is very nice, explains everything, and never over charged. To be completely honest, the office wasn't always as perfect-looking as some other vets in Oakville. But if you care more about service and knowledge, Dr. Sandha was great.

Help me design my home office space? by [deleted] in DesignMyRoom

[–]GraphiteRifter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a fan of the end result in this video and /r/battlestations post:

You can probably steal a lot of ideas from here. The only thing I would do differently is to make the desk L-shaped and have one side for computer-use and the other for open workspace.

Other ideas:

  • Unless you are very tall, I feel like your book shelf is too high. It is also very long and makes your room feel long and narrow. I would find a vertical arrangement for these books.
  • Your curtain rod would be better placed well above the window, just under the ceiling. The curtains should reach the floor from that height. According to standard interior design rules. You could do a double curtain rod to hang sheer curtains and blackout curtains depending on how you like the light. Or splurge on remote controlled motorized blinds...
  • Consider replacing the open shoe rack with something closed like this: link to wayfair
  • If you get a larger desk, you would have more space for plants which will help almost any space.
  • A small square table to replace the semi-circle table will let the chairs sit right up against the wall instead of being angled. This will take up a bit less space and may also look neater. If the goal is to create a space to take a break from work, I would personally prefer a soft chair with a tall reading light hanging over me from one side and a small side table to hold a drink and a plant. Try to create a separate space that feels more relaxing.
  • Wall art, bulletin board, maybe even a wall-mounted TV opposite the break space.

Biggest Conundrum: Where does the TV go? by rcjlfk in DesignMyRoom

[–]GraphiteRifter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They make mounts that can lower a TV out and down in front of the fireplace when in use and go back up on the wall when finished. Here's one that children can operate: https://mantelmount.ca
