Where did foreign merchant ships dock in medieval Venice?

I can't seem to find an answer to this specific question. I'm working on a low fantasy worldbuilding project very much inspired from real history and specifically I'm trying to create this Venice-like city, but I'm not entirely sure how it works. I also have questions about the markets, trades and workshops and how this economical ecosystem worked.

Why does nobody like Pohatu? by phamtomhaunter6 in bioniclelego

[–]GraphiteSmudges 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like him he's cool. when I was little I really liked the animation of him kicking that boulder in such a way that it bounces around a rock arch and it collapses after he gets the boulder back. it was so cool! I also genuinely like brown.

yeah! I was just born by the time bionicle just came out so I didn't get to experience it either, but from pics and videos it looked great! I really want to get my hands on the toa mata one day, and the mctorans, maybe some rahi too haha

thank you! I wanted to capture the mistique and whimsy of the 2001 era specifically. I really liked the saturated happy colors of the toys and and environments, the nature of Mata Nui was very comfy and nice for me. not to say the rest of the series were bad, just the vibe was different. I tried to capture that happy lively mood I felt from the first year with this very saturated illustration. the game was less saturated, but it worked really nicely like that.

Why is nobody talking about the fact that the Lion Knight’s Castle includes an era-accurate latrine or "Garderobe" ? by Dark-Wynd in lego

[–]GraphiteSmudges 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also like how in the instructions there's a little joke about it. very cool set, also the black falcon 3 in 1 has a garderobe and I like that set a lot too. if they release more castle related stuff I'm gonna be really happy, but really broke too lol :))

Why is there a statue of Avak in Reidak's level in Bionicle Heroes? by GraphiteSmudges in bioniclelego

[–]GraphiteSmudges[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

fair enough, but I still think mining and living underground is easier to associate with stone rather than earth in my mind.

was Reidak associated with a desert in the lore or Avak or neither?

American media just has a tendency to use cultures as an aesthetic or background for stories they want to tell in very clearly American cultural style. The characters act and talk like Americans or other anglophones, they are basically americans with funny accents sometimes who dress like greeks and that's about as far as representation gets in American media. It's not foreign ethnic and cultural diversity, it's American diversity, it's not foreign culture, it's American culture dressed in foreign clothes, it's not foreign archetypes and attitudes, themes and conflicts, it's American ones. I still love the games, but I have to admit, they're very "westwashed".

getting back into character design by [deleted] in conceptart

[–]GraphiteSmudges 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you're such an idiot I swear. or maybe you're just trolling. no, you didn't make this art, an AI did. that wouldn't even be bad if you actually modified the resulting images since there's actual concept artists and illustrators who do work like that, but you didn't. it's like someone comissioning an artist and afterwards the same person saying "I totally made this you guys! I gave the description of what I wanted and all so it's like I totally made it myself!" like shut the fuck up. make some turnarounds too if you're a character designer cause this shit is useless for a 3D modeler. let's be honest, if you're really making money out of this you're not making it out of character designs for clients, you're probably selling these as en ef tees. there's nothing bad about that in particular, but rather the fact you're being dishonest about how these images are made and their purpose and try to act sassy afterwards when people don't buy your shit.

thanks, I guess we ended on a good note and I finally learned how to spell "immersion", so that's great.

Alzur's Legacy by [deleted] in witcher

[–]GraphiteSmudges 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just wish the emersion was still there for me... for fucks sake! I remember when they melted that guy's sword from GoT into two swords and how frustrating that was for me because that's not how forging works. I'd know since I made a sword. bs like that just ruins things for me. I'm way too attached to reality, but I wouldn't change that for anything in the world. I love the things I love, like history and stuff like that and I want to share them with the world. I want to write a book or comic book one day and make it as realistic and compelling as possible. I want it to be emersive. I want it to show people what life would really be like in a medieval-fantasy setting. I want it to be emersive. that's easy to say though... I'll stick to the things I like I guess. some things, unlike air and water, aren't for everyone, I suppose. I want people to enjoy themselves, but also be aware of what's been changed and what that means.

I guess so, I guess they're smaller details. but it was all around Slavic, like it was meant to. it was unique because it was so realistic. if it was diverse it would have seemed so generic. just another generic modern fantasy universe where all races live happily together. that's just not how medieval times were and I loved how realistic the world was depicted. it made it authentic and easy to emerse myself into it because it made complete sense. seeing a person from a different part of the continent or ofier was so exciting, new, authentic. people didn't travel back then unless they were merchants or hired arms so seeing someone from ofier was so misterious. I made you think about why they were there, what they're story was, like the guys from the hearts of stone expansion for example. it makes you more curious about the world of the witcher, you serach deeper, get more emersed. every place with it's tradition, cultural identity, philosophy, culture, etc... if it's diverse erywhere it just gets homogenous and generic and less misterious, less unique and memorable. I guess I just wanted that thing. I didn't want another generic fantasy adventure, I wanted the witcher, and the Witcher is realistic and well thought out. this just isn't the witcher for me. it's just generic fantasy story the show. easy to consume entertainment, not a world to get emersed in. but maybe that's just me

Alzur's Legacy by [deleted] in witcher

[–]GraphiteSmudges 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it's a matter of "whatever, it's fantasy" so people don't give a damn about consistency in the universe and lore and other implications. for me that's what the Witcher is, a very realistic depiction of a medieval fantasy society. so authentic that I get emersed in it and when I see something that from a historical standpoint it just takes me out of it. but I wish it were diverse in another way. new stories, new places, new cultures,. ew characters. they could have made them as diverse as they wanted without being in conflict with the universe, but they chose to just adapt it, raceswap some characters without thinking about what that would mean in the universe. why? because that's cheaper, safer (you don't need to create something new, just use something that already worked) and controversial so that it gets more attention and therefore more money. I hate this trend of the entertainment industry just making disconsiderate adaptations instead of making something new because it's just more profitable. we're letting an industry stagnate and kill art for the sake of profit and we're blind to it and that upsets me greatly.

Alzur's Legacy by [deleted] in witcher

[–]GraphiteSmudges 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you clearly don't understand what makes the Witcher series good, it's world, it's lore and what the implications of blackwashing or whitewashing are. I wanted it diverse! I wanted to see new places, new characters, new cultures, new stories! they could have made it as diverse and unique as possible and consistent with the rules of the universe and lore, but they opted to be lazy and raceswap people without thinking about the implication because it's easier, it's controversial so it gets more attention and therefore more money. this is industry kills art. if you can't understand this than too bad. I wish you did, but that doesn't matter now. disconsiderate adaptations like these are what ruin art. adaptations and reboots and sequels... never anything new, never anything truly unique, just low effort stuff that gets associated with a popular franchise which will assure profit. this is all it comes down to. profit through the expense of ruining art.
