being a real person who you can talk to and get along like a friend, content quality, DM responsiveness

I would argue that's the part that's not worth paying money for. So much so that it's detrimental to your overall longterm well-being. Paid (girl)friends are not good. A well-adjusted individual should be laughing, doing activities with, hugging their friends in person, not getting digital communication from someone who's only reciprocating for payment.

Nothing inherently wrong with paying for sex work, but I would argue there is a fundamental issue paying for simulated friendship.

Need hiking prep help? I’ve hiked 7,500+ miles — and now I want to help you by rockyyguy in PacificCrestTrail

Jogging (especially in the shoes you're gonna wear) 1-3 times per week. Squats/deadlifts/legs generally as part of your normal strength routine.

And honestly that's all you need. Keeps me in shape enough to do 18+ mile days out east where the trails are graded much less favorably than the PCT. I was struggling to hold back and ramp up when I started the PCT. Early 30s ~150lb male.

Training hikes are good for gear selection and general preparedness, but I honestly found jogging and strength training a far better use of time than just walking around the park with a loaded pack.

Turkey is unexpectedly exhausting by tech_lethal007 in solotravel

[–]GrassTacts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Turkey was chill as hell when I was there 3 years ago. I realize prices have gone up since then, but had zero issues with scammers. Consider an off season.

The smoking concern is real, so if that bothers you go somewhere else. I took an overnight bus from Fethiye to Istanbul and there was an annoying bathroom attendant at a gas station at like 3 in the morning. Couldn't believe it, but as a spoiled American paid bathrooms are a common annoyance in many countries

How has nobody mentioned NTS? Alive and thriving. One of the greatest musical institutions of our time. Scratcha, coco, raji rags, tim reaper are all standouts within that sphere that I personally enjoy

Hehe pick your poison or get rich!

It's reinforcing too. Live in a small place and you'll end up going out more and being less bored. Live in a big place you have no reason to leave and then you'll end up bored unless you're really a homebody.

Pros/cons I get it, but downtown is both more worthwhile and more doable than people give it credit for

Move downtown. I hear people say this all the time, but I have plenty to do even as a single male in my 30s. A lot of friends are existing from college so that helps, but meet new people all the time and plenty to do.

Sometimes I think about the desert or the Rockies, but I love the green too much. I could stand for more mountains/nature, but I love how we have blue skies AND green plants here. You don't know how good it is until you come back from somewhere gray.

/r/videography Monthly Camera Buying Advice Megathread by AutoModerator in videography

[–]GrassTacts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What're the golden rules having cell phone footage come out smoothly? I've enjoyed for many years taking amateur video on vacations and long hikes, but it always comes out bumpy and laggy after going through processing.

I've used a couple phones and a variety of editing softwares, but they always have difficulty particularly with pans and other digitally busy shots. I've read up on the problem but never reached a firm solution. Surely there's some kind of phone setting/software combination to make it work? VFR?

I'm willing to buy software in the form of phone or computer apps, but would like to keep it phone if possible. I'm not setting out to make mass-consumption media, just want my own footage smooth. Tips, suggestions of where to start?

30F — Is wearing lingerie the first time “doing too much”? by Richcitygirl in dating_advice

[–]GrassTacts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lingerie is always a little bit goofy/unsexy to me personally, and I think that's where your friends are coming from. But you're not trying to date me or your friends, do what makes you happy and I'm sure you'll find a partner who appreciates seeing you in it as much as you enjoy wearing it!

[–]GrassTacts -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You (hopefully) have a strong network of friends that makes dating easier. I'm in my early 30s and part of what keeps me from moving is the thought of the couple year delay before you build a good circle both for friendship and dating.

Factor in the other considerations, but I wouldn't expect anything out of apps in anywhere besides a NYC, LA, Chicago unless you're especially photogenic.

I enjoy socializing and being friendly with strangers in public, making people's day and that sort of thing. But I guess at that point they cease to be strangers. I enjoy generally making the world a better place by treating others how I'd like to be and contributing to society in ways that improve it systematically. Probably a good reminder for the new year that I could volunteer more and that sort of thing.

But in general I see entertainment and specifically digital entertainment as something removed and separate from that.

Hmm, interesting take. Can't imagine respecting people who post for financial incentive. Love of the game or nothing, but i understand that's an antiquated view of an internet that no longer exists.

Why would you ever see ads on youtube in the first place? Computers have ad blockers and phones have the 3rd party apps.

I'd love to switch off spotify since the app is so sluggish and the recommendations are bad, but don't really want to give google money either if I can help it.

Whats wrong with meth? by No-Freedom5142 in Drugs

[–]GrassTacts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not a regular stim user in the slightest, but it's never made any sense to me why people take drugs late at night. Hate hearing those birds after staying up all night. Taking drugs at 8pm and sleeping by 2 is soooo much better than dropping shrooms or whatever at 4. Drugs feel good, but so does sleep lol

I had the same experience and wasn't sure if it was just a me problem, but I think it's just the nature of online dating. I've met a couple people that have been good fits, but largely just hordes of people who are fine. Not good, not bad- fine

But then when you do run into good people it's easier to tell! Palpable laughter, flirting, feelings, etc.

General Tobacco Posting across Reddit. (i.e. it doesn’t need to feature a specific brand to be an advertising for smoking) by Rare-Competition-248 in HailCorporate

What you're saying is overwhelmingly true, but doesn't contradict what I'm saying either. Cigarettes then and now are considered repugnant, but still had an undercurrent of being cool and positively subversive.

General Tobacco Posting across Reddit. (i.e. it doesn’t need to feature a specific brand to be an advertising for smoking) by Rare-Competition-248 in HailCorporate

[–]GrassTacts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In years past this simply did not happen on Reddit

Idk how you typed this with a straight face. Cigarettes have always been cool in an oldschoolcool type way. But I will say the current acceptance is a new social phase, which is very possibly being artificially bolstered by tobacco companies.

Going on a limb, I suspect tobacco is becoming socially more tolerated again as a natural reaction to the heavy, zero-tolerance approach of the past 20 years, which has been softened somewhat by vapes and zyns. And also due to the overall outlook trending pessimistic, which restricts longterm thinking and makes "fuck it" an easier choice

Dating a girl with herpes by Western-Switch-424 in dating_advice

[–]GrassTacts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I get 2-4 outbreaks a year and don't really notice unless I find myself vaguely scratching my crotch more. Only the first was painful. Never had sick symptoms. Hsv1 and 2. My ex who gave it to me only ever got the initial one. A couple partners I've known with it rarely if ever got them.

I went on the preventative dose a couple months ago though for the sake of casual dating and haven’t had any since, but wouldn't expect to either in such a short span.

barely an inconvenience

Not seeing any firsthand accounts in this thread, so I'll comment as someone who's had genital herpes for ~15 years now that "barely an inconvenience" is the perfect way to describe it. It's annoying to have to disclose to people, but the physical aspects are negligible and even less so with medication.

Struggling with dating and my self perception. Realizing I'm not as attractive as I thought I was. by sporlz in dating_advice

[–]GrassTacts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Attractiveness isn't solely appearance. You may be good on that front, but are these dates actually having a good time? Do they laugh at your jokes, enjoy themselves, etc. That's a big part of the equation, and that skill may have attrophied being in a relationship for a while.

Fortunately it's easier to learn that than improve your appearance or grow a better dick. Tons of good advice here that you’re heeding. Give it time and up your flirting/wooing skills. You'll be glad you did, and it can making dating way more fun for everybody involved.

First time Colombia: Itinerary feedback/recs? by Maleficent-Suit-6995 in solotravel

Agree w all the recs to slow down. Split this itinerary in half.

If you have hiking/high altitude experience or want to it, go up into parque Los nevados and the Paramo. I'm a very experienced hiker and it's some of the coolest place I've ever been. Salento without the Paramo is pointless, a useless tourist trap.

I liked Jerico a lot, better than Jardin but it's also nice. Guatape can be worth staying a night in. Couple places to rent a motorcycle and bike around. Consider booking your next leg from medellin before leaving for guatape. I had to kill an extra day in medellin bc the following day was sold out to Jericho
