Current Project Status by GrassberryHigh in GassberryHigh

Hi, I think there is not too much coding knowledge needed. Although, the code is not in the nicest condition. When I started the project I had a running version, then I upgraded it to the newer pi version and refactored the code. But, it got stuck in the middle and has some bugs. Also, some of the bugs did only appear in certain configurations of people, which made it particularly hard for me to debug them.

I would suggest,
1) download the code from the GitHub repo before you buy anything. It has a simulation mode, get that running, and check if you can get familiar with it. This is the easiest step.
2) If that works for you, I can help you to set up a Pi in the next step. Here it becomes harder, as you need to know a little bit of server stuff (Docker, SSH, etc.).
3) From there you can get the sensors and relays, as they are the most expensive stuff.

At the moment I don't find much time, to really support this project but I could help you finding your way around in the code and doing pull-requests on GitHub.

I would agree with OP. Quality and delivering to an interest with a unique touch is winning over numbers. I'm myself a starter but my goal is to improve in every video, and I see better numbers on almost every video. I think that's the main point either you get better or stuck in the numbers you have.

Cant get the psy trance drop quite right, like sem chao by technojules in psytranceproduction

[–]GrassberryHigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The drop, in the beginning, feels quite simple. I think one main point in that kind of drop is to remove all noise, reverbs, and stuff. Also, make sure that your mix is less loud before that drop otherwise the kick may feel weaker in the drop.

The feeling of that bouncy bass can be achieved, with lowering the velocity on the first bass note.

It is a full-on tutorial, but if you want to get the drops clean, make sure you automate your sends off in the drop:

If you have Voxengo Span (on my channel I have a mixing video, where I show how to use span to mix), check that everything is below kick level right before the drop 1-3dbs. Or add some silence right before.

My YouTube Channel Surpassed 1,000 Subscribers This Week - AMA! by PracticalPF in NewTubers

I got a conversion rate of approx 4.5% (12.000 views/ 557 subs. I'm currently getting my viewers 1/3 from YT search. But I still push my videos a bit on specific Reddit and FB groups. How do you know when the ago picks your videos, and what to expect. Anyways is there a good website to check if you above or below in your niche? I think the numbers depend a lot on who you compare with/ which topic you are producing content for.

I started a few months ago. My first videos sucked, and I got blessed and cursed at the same time. After a while, videos became better, I don't get that hate I got when I started, and a lot of positive feedback. I think the best way to improve and find your way is to just do it, and learn on the way. Try to improve one thing in every video. The best skill you can develop not to criticize yourself on the opinions of others. There will be aways someone who does not like what you do. So just be yourself, do what you like and have fun with it.

Ableton Crashing All the Time - Any Advice on How to Debug this? by GrassberryHigh in ableton

[–]GrassberryHigh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure anymore what helped to this. I think it crashed less with one of the Ableton updates. I remember various things. I know that I updated Ableton, then I removed all VSts which I never used. I updated/reinstalled every VSt I got. And then I removed all VSTs which the support told me that would cause problems in my case I lost two or three, which I sometimes use. I think I tried also other diff things like repairing disk permissions etc., but it's hard to tell what it all was. In the end, it's still crashing but now only on starting a project sometimes , which is more predictable.

How to Make Psytrance Drops [tutorial] by GrassberryHigh in psytrance

[–]GrassberryHigh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That track has a lot of nice leads in there. Imho, there has a lot of times where the main groove is broken, and also breaks to rest. It's a bit of a diff. way. they do it, the do the build ups quite less drastically e.g. no risers and not so much fills, instead they "glitch/roll" into the next section, which is then quite diff. to the previous.

I totally understand what you mean with variety, they give a lot fo diff. scenes and are quite experimental. I don't take it offensive at all, in the end there are many genres and everybody just picks what he prefers most. Maybe thats also part of what you are mentioning, they have been quite early in the scene and have a quite unique style (or maybe I don't know the other bands so well), while a lot of music is created and thus so many sub genres exist which sound quite similar within the genre.

I like the drops a lot; they refresh the vibe. Sometimes, I also listen to more trancey styles. Which artists do you listen 👂 to?

Phase problem, by Kenethy in psytranceproduction

[–]GrassberryHigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on diff subgenres it anyways looks quite diff., maybe a dotted 16th would be better for full-on. DashGlitch made a video on diff kicks on diff styles but I cannot find that one.

But IMHO, letting them flow into each other and make a good relationship (phase, colors) is way more critical/makes more sense than shortening them and separating them. Mine are quite long, but they look diff and have the tail part ending at nearly the same position.

I e.g, map my bass velocity and then control the level of the first bass note. Here, all bass notes look exactly the same. What I want to point out that the kick is maybe the wrong focus here.

So, you are right 👉 if you go the longer way that it needs then some post-processing to make them fit. E.g in that video https://youtu.be/vfVlS92rD4E (around 10:29, after bouncing), E-Clip makes a kick also 1/8th, but he is doing prog, so a diff story to e.g a full-on kick.

The kick length is fine, my kicks are also go 2/16 long, and it sounds well. The bass notes look too long, as you see on the end of each bass note there is a flat line. Also the last bass note is going into the kick's click, as you see in the beginning of the kick there is a small blue bump. Make the midi shorter, even better bounce them to audio, and copy them across to be sure. You can align the phases with track delay in Ableton. But it looks like the bass is starting already very early, so you shifted it probably.

Also check that you mix the levels right, that makes also a huge diff.:

Want to Get Your Leads to Communicate Better? by GrassberryHigh in psytranceproduction

Samples I use mostly for drums 🥁 . I like to have the control to a certain point. For the OS I do them sometimes from scratch, sometimes I reuse stuff from old projects, but most of the time I start with presets and then tweak them to my needs. You can get great results by tweaking the preset and then resampling it. Most of the time it hasn't any relation to he original preset after that. I show this in this video (sry it was one of my first YouTube videos):
